Rant VIII: The Reckoning

I worked on a blueberry farm during two summers packing blueberries. That was when they used to have the cellophane and rubber bands on compressed cardboard pints instead of the plastic clam shell type of containers. Sometimes crates came in with snakes in them. Sometimes the pickers would fill pints with leaves so they'd have more crates counted. The thing that absolutely turned my stomach was when a crate came up the line that one of the pickers had pissed in. The owner took the crate, washed the berries off with a hose, and put them back on the line to be packed once they were dry. I almost cried. It took me years to eat raw blueberries and even now I prefer them cooked in something.
Welp, I *used* to like blueberries.

Not that I don't get what you're saying, but if grows in nature, there's a pretty good change something has urinated or defecated on it.
It's one thing to get some animal splash, it's another to sit soaking in it in a crate in a truck for who knows how long.

I'd also have hoped that after a disgruntled berry picker has pissed directly into an entire crate, that the cleaning process would have been slightly more involved than "spray the crate with a hose." Like, at least maybe put them out on a screen/rack and spray em there, a couple times.

I started as one of the salad cooks and ended as the head line cook. So I was responsible for making sure everything was plated correctly and cooked right. I was amazingly good at it, considering I'm not that good of a cook outside of an assembly line a restaurant style. I kept things moving and even when slow I kept everyone engaged and ready just in case. We'd be singing and joking around pretty much all night. The managers didn't care as long as we were business when it called for it. And they were very upset when I quit.

It's one of the few things in my life I can truly say I was good at. Too bad it couldn't have been playing high stakes poker or sex.
High stakes sex is definitely something you don't want to get wrong.

Aaaand there goes our car.

Holy shit its like...like I just cant get ahead. We were doing so well and now this. It's always the fucking car.

Excuse me while I try to distract myself and figure out how we're going to get by for the next while. I am literally one step away from begging for money but I already did that once and it was so humbling and so sad of me that i don't know if I can do it again.

Two things happened today that made me hate people a little more.

1) While putting away some books, I saw a woman zip up her backpack. She had some clothes with her that she was buying. It was suspicious, but I didn't see her put anything in, so I didn't say anything. She stood up and as she walked past me, rather venomously said, "Do you mind?!" And then proceeded to give me endless dirty looks.

Lady, I was just putting away books that just happened to be in the same area. You'll forgive me if someone with an open backpack in a store makes me a little suspicious.

2) While biking home, I was at a red light. Another cyclist came up behind me...and zoomed right past me, running the red light.

It's assholes like him that give urban cyclists like me a bad name.

On Wed, I had someone come in to exchange a product under warranty, and got upset when I took a while to verify eligibility/serial/etc. She sicced a manager on me and everything when I wouldn't "just go ahead and exchange it already."
Nevermind that I discovered she was in to exchange the same thing not just today, but also in August, in June, in May, and in December of last year, and tried to exchange something similar in April that turned out to be counterfeit.
Lady, just go away.

The amount of times I've had clients tell me that an intervention or work "couldn't be billed" or "they wouldn't pay for [this service]" because of something that was entirely their own fault probably exceeds even the numbers on @Dave's age.
If we call you on your cell phone to check if you want a guard to check your house, and you don't respond because you "don't recognize the phone number", that's not our problem. If you "didn't get our call" because you changed phone numbers and didn't tell us, that's not our problem. If you changed your locks and didn't tell us, it's not our fault we can't do an internal sweep. If all of the people we have on our emergency contact list have been fired for stealing from the company, and you didn't tell us, that's not our fault. And so on, and so forth. If you've "lost" your ID code/pass-phrase and call to cancel an intervention, don't tell us you won't pay - if we'd accept the cancel from you, we'd accept it from anyone - we don't recognize your voice over the phone. That's pretty much the whole point of a password. If you're angry at us for accepting a cancellation from someone who doesn't have authority to cancel - how about not giving them your password.

All in all, customers, and people in general, are idiots. The customer is king, or is always right, or whatever, is big nonsense. The customer is a great big twat, that's definitely true, though.

So, my new book finally drops sometime today, according to my publisher. Ordinarily, I'd be happy about this.

Except how it's been handled pisses me off. There's been a complete lack of communication about when it was coming out. When I asked, I'd get half answers that'd side-shift the question. So I'm only finding out the day of its release, giving me no time to do even a little bit of pre-hype.

Secondly, it's technically on Amazon now. Don't look it up. It may not stay up there because of weird technical things with Amazon. But this is the first time I'm seeing the final cover and back copy. They never sent me the final copy for me to look over. Know why that's a problem? Because they changed the back copy for the book's description. It's not in first person as I'd written it - even though the back copy of the first book is in first person. And there are things in it that need editing, like a line that says "bring him into consult" when it should read "in to consult." It might be a minor thing, but that's a BIG spelling error that I personally would never have knowingly made. Hell, I just checked what I'd originally written and it WAS "in to," not "into."

The fact that I wasn't even given a chance to check this at all pisses me the hell off. This is pissing all over the book release that I've been hyping up for months.

*sigh* And worse, I'm stuck at work all day when it actually officially drops, so I can't even do anything to promote it on its first day because I didn't know when it was dropping until the day of its release.

Huh... that does seem rather bush league. A blatant typographical error on the back cover? That's terrible.

I'm honestly so pissed off right now that I'm thinking of not even hyping it or talking about it anymore. Depending on how they respond, I might be done with Pro Se.

Even if you're done with them, I'd advise against badmouthing them in public, even here. Don't want to burn bridges or, when it comes time for a future publisher, have them see you badmouthing your previous one.

I have to agree. While I have no experience in the publishing world., I know that in my field, everyone knows everyone. So even though one of the CA firms I worked for here was brutal and one of my managers discriminatory and just plain a bad human being (anyone who makes fun of your pet dying is non-save-able in my books not to mention his thoughts on my debilitating health issues), I always say when asked why I left, "It was pretty intense there but I learned a lot". I did learn a lot. I also put in ridiculous overtime and was constantly totally stressed out.

So that stupid "into" and "in to" error? Amazons, not my publisher. And seeing the final copy of the book? That wasn't an option apparently. I thought it was, since I saw the final copy of CITY when it came out two years ago. That was just a courtesy. I didn't know that at the time.

I got all worked up over this and now he's talking about pulling the book, and my previous one, and relinquishing all rights back to me.

I got so upset about it that I had a breakdown at work. I'm typing this from home. I fucked this up and it's all my fault. I've done so many stupid things, like sending in corrections after the manuscript was sent in, and other bullshit.

I don't know what to do now, especially if everything is pulled.

Probably just give up.

jesus fuck...

He's not, now. We talked it out. I apologized like crazy.

Book release is tentatively Monday.[DOUBLEPOST=1442592418,1442592381][/DOUBLEPOST]I also had a breakdown at work over all this (and a fight with the girlfriend this morning, which didn't help). Now I'm home and...I don't know. I'm gonna game or something.

(Didn't lose my job. They sent me home because I was literally tearing up in front of customers. And then broke down completely in the office when they brought me back there to try calming me down.)

That's just because you're a little off-kilter.[DOUBLEPOST=1442599472,1442599365][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, you guys kind of went off on a tangent. I know we do that to some degree around here, but but never on a wild arc like this. It's like we're a unit going around in circles.

Would you give it a rest? It's just a phase they are going through.
