Coronavirus Thread

We're getting pressure about going to my brother-in-law's house for Easter, where would meet our six or seven month old nephew for the first time. I'm sticking to a strong 'no', and I believe my lovely wife will agree. because I'm the only one who will be vaccinated. I'm pretty sure this will upset people, and I just can't care. Last time we were there, the house was full and we were the only ones wearing masks. I'm not going to be responsible for my nephew dying because the fam wanted to hunt for eggs.

Five States account for half the new cases, now. Surprisingly, Texas is not one of them.

New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44% of the nation's new COVID-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest available seven-day period, according to state health agency data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Total U.S. infections during the same week numbered more than 452,000.

So, a megachurch here in Alberta, Grace Life has been flouting restrictions since day one and now AHS has literally had to put a fence around the fucking building to get them to comply (they're the epicenter of massive outbreaks in the area).

I remember how we reacted when some native kids were protesting building pipelines right through their only source of drinking water. I remember the violence.

Seriously, fuck "Grace Life" and in particular the leadership there. They'd rather make the news for death and violence than care for their congregants or neighbours. Fuck 'em.

Health Service employees in this tiny hamlet in northern Alberta, the largest (and most insane) Mennonite community in Canada (I believe, I could be wrong) has gotten so worked up over this (by their own MLA) that they've begun attacking nurses and other medical folk. AHS employees now have a permanent RCMP escort there.

Apparently my husband's paternal grandmother never got vaccinated and now she has COVID. She's already not in great health so it probably won't have a good ending. He's really mad about it, but at the same time, his parents and his aunts/uncles on that side haven't gotten vaxxed either, so maybe it will be the kick in the ass they need to do it instead of being hesitant.

She's not in a nursing home, but she does live in one of those assisted living communities that let's her have her own townhouse, and caregivers check up on her, so we think she refused to get vaxxed for some reason.

Oh by the way, Grace Life is right beside Enoch land and the chief came down because protestors are fucking making a mess inside Enoch tribal territory.

They vandalized his car and told him they "identified as First Nations"

ONE FUCKING JOKE.

It's weird to me to see Canada experiencing so many of the same things we are dealing with here in America. George Soros, Socialism, Globalization, all the other boogymen, etc. I deal with them so much here in America I just always see it as a mostly American problem. Then I read threads like the one above and I realize Canada is dealing with just as many of the same conspiracy nuts.

Canadians like to pretend that they are better than Americans by nature of simply being Canadians, but the truth of the matter is that Canada is involved with much of the same shit and is even more guilty about some of it (I'm looking at YOU, the on-going cultural genocide of the Native Peoples of Canada) than we are.

Canada leans more on the Liberal side than Conservative as a whole, at least compared to the states, but there's still a very strong Conservative opposition. Especially in strong footholds from out west (especially Alberta). Out west is basically the equivalent of the southern states in a lot of ways.

And I don't think we have as many religious nutters compared to the states. Less science deniers than the US, but they're here, too. Which is probably why we lean more Liberal as a whole since that seems to often go hand in hand.

But...yeah, that's not to say we have a clean history. There is rampant racism especially against First Nation people. And our history of treating black people (look up Africville here in Halifax) or Asian people (internment camps during or after WW2) is not kind. Or Muslims, like Quebec's ban on religious symbols or clothing. The Hell's Angels also have or had a strong hold in some parts of the country and they have ties to right wing or white supremacist organizations.

So yeah, we have a lot of the same problems. Maybe not quite on the same scale as the US, or just measured on different scales.
