Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

Their immediate reaction of "We were, all of us, deceived" strikes me as them seeing this as Serious Business(tm), especially since they've largely spent the past decade screaming for civil war and how they are "independent thinkers" and the "Russia Hoax" was a desperate lie from the Dems.

However, I'm not sure the argument they are currently going with of "We would have said the same things for free, they just happened to be paying us because it harmed America" is the good idea they think it is...

Watching Tim Pool pretty much melt down in fear has been fun. Dude thinks calling Putin names and adding a Ukraine flag to his Twitter handle will absolve him of his involvement in spreading Russian propaganda.

I mean there's a real ecosystem of American billionaires funding right wing pundits to promote their ideology. Its pretty plausible that everyone just assumed thats where the money was coming from.

A 14-year-old killed two students, two teachers, and left at least nine more hospitalized after a mass shooting at a Georgia high school. Colt Gray will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. The high school reportedly received a phone call warning that there would be shootings at five schools, and that Apalachee High School would be the first. Biden called the shooting “another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart.” Kamala Harris added that “This is just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies, and it’s just outrageous that everyday in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school, worried about whether or not their child will come home alive […] We’ve got to stop it, and we have to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. You know it doesn’t have to be this way.” Before today, there had been 29 mass killings in the U.S. so far this year. Last year, there were 217 deaths from 42 mass killings in the U.S. – one of the deadliest years on record for such shootings in the country. The Biden administration accused Putin of orchestrating a campaign to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential election, help Trump win, and erode international support for Ukraine. The Justice Department charged two Russian media executives and seized 32 web domains that it said were part of a broad, ongoing effort by the Russian government to spread propaganda. The two employees of RT – a Russian state-controlled media outlet – covertly funded a Tennessee-based company with nearly $10 million “to publish and disseminate content deemed favorable to the Russian government” on social media. The nearly 2,000 videos have gotten more than 16 million views on YouTube alone, prosecutors said. “The Justice Department’s message is clear: We have no tolerance for attempts by authoritarian regimes to exploit our democratic system of government,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said. The Treasury Department also sanctioned 10 individuals and two entities in response to “Moscow’s malign influence efforts targeting the 2024 U.S. presidential election.” (Associated Press / Washington Post / Wall Street Journal / Politico / CNN / New York Times / ABC News / NBC News / NPR / USA Today / Axios)

A nonpartisan watchdog group asked the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to remove Judge Aileen Cannon from Trump’s classified documents case, arguing she’s taken “many efforts to undermine and derail the prosecution of this case.” In July, Cannon dismissed the federal case, which accused Trump of mishandling classified information after leaving the White House, citing the “unlawful appointment” of special counsel Jack Smith. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, joined by a retired federal judge and two legal scholars, requested that the case be reassigned to a different South Florida judge if the appeals court overturns Cannon’s ruling. “Even before she dismissed this case on novel and insupportable grounds that ignored both statutory authority and Supreme Court precedent, Judge Cannon’s other extraordinary rulings and sluggish administration of the case had provoked well-founded concerns that she might be biased against the Government’s case and unable to manage that case impartially,” CREW wrote. Biden is considering making his temporary asylum restrictions nearly impossible to lift. After Senate Republicans blocked a $118 billion bipartisan border package, which Republicans had demanded but later rejected after pressure from Trump, who wanted to make the border a campaign issue, Biden issued an executive order in June that temporarily suspended most asylum claims at the southern border when unauthorized crossings exceed a daily threshold. After the executive order went into effect, the number of arrests at the southern border has dropped from 118,000 in May to 56,000 in July. The ban was designed to be lifted when the number of migrants crossing the southern border illegally dropped below an average of 1,500 per day for one week, followed by a two-week waiting period. In July, Border Patrol apprehended an average 1,820 migrants a day. The change currently under discussion would increase the time the number of crossings must remain below that level to several weeks. (New York Times / Reuters)

Trump’s federal criminal election interference case resumed after a nearly yearlong delay. The case had been on hold since late last year, when Trump appealed U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s decision that he’s not entitled to “presidential immunity” from criminal prosecution. Despite two lower courts rejecting Trump’s claim of total immunity, the Supreme Court took up the appeal and ruled in July that Trump is entitled to “absolute immunity from criminal prosecution” for “official acts.” Last week, special counsel Jack Smith charged Trump in a superseding indictment in the case involving an alleged conspiracy to obstruct the results of the 2020 election. The revised indictment kept the same four charges against Trump, but recalibrated the case to adjust to the Supreme Court’s ruling that presidents enjoy sweeping immunity from prosecution for their official conduct. Today, lawyers on both sides sparred over their proposed paths for how the election interference case against Trump should proceed. Chutkan appeared inclined to give prosecutors a chance to lay out the evidence against Trump within the next few weeks. Trump’s attorney, John Lauro, however, pushed back, saying this a “sensitive time” with the presidential election approaching. Chutkan responded: “The electoral process and the timing of the election […] is not relevant here. This court is not concerned with the electoral schedule.” (Politico / Washington Post / New York Times / CBS News / CNN / CNBC)

Kamala Harris called for a 28% capital gains tax rate for Americans who earn at least $1 million a year – 10 points lower than Biden’s proposed 39.6% top rate. The current capital gains tax rate is 20%. “While we ensure that the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share, we will tax capital gains at a rate that rewards investment in America’s innovators, founders and small businesses,” Harris said. While Trump hasn’t explicitly outlined a position, in 2016 he supported capping capital gains taxes at 20%, and the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 calls for a 15% tax on capital gains. (Bloomberg / USA Today / Axios / ABC News / CNN / CNBC)

Trump pledged to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% from 21% for companies that make their products in the U.S. Trump has also called for tariffs of 10% to 20% – and even higher rates on China – he claims would return manufacturing jobs to the U.S. Economists, however, have warned that sweeping tariffs on $3 trillion worth of imports would reignite inflation. “I am promising low taxes, low regulations, low energy costs, low interest rates, secure borders, low, low, low crime,” Trump said. Trump, meanwhile, also promised to ban undocumented immigrants from obtaining home mortgages. Out of the more than 3.4 million mortgages in 2023, some 5,000 to 6,000 were issued under a program designed for taxpayers without Social Security numbers. (Bloomberg / Associated Press / Wall Street Journal / CNN)

Kamala Harris announced plans for a $50,000 tax benefit for small businesses, expanding the current $5,000 deduction for start-up expenses. In addition, Harris proposed developing a standard deduction for small businesses meant to save owners time when doing their taxes, make it easier to get occupational licenses, and new incentives for state and local governments to make it easier to form start-ups. “America’s small businesses are an essential foundation to our entire economy,” Harris said. The plans are part of a goal to spur some 25 million new business applications in her first term – up from the record 19 million since Biden took office. (Associated Press / CNBC / Wall Street Journal / New York Times / Washington Post / USA Today)

Trump endorsed Elon Musk’s plan for a “government efficiency commission” to cut federal spending, which would be led by Musk “if he has the time.” Without offering concrete details, Trump claimed that “This commission will develop an action plan to totally eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months” by “conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms.” Musk, meanwhile, said he looked forward “to serving America if the opportunity arises” without pay or a title. It’s not clear how Musk would resolve his potential conflicts of interests leading the commission while SpaceX has contracts from the federal government and Tesla has received federal tax credits and other government incentives. Since Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, the social media company’s value has plunged 72% and resulted in $24 billion in paper losses. (Washington Post / Axios / NBC News / USA Today / CNBC / Wall Street Journal / New York Times)

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to the nine charges in the federal tax case against him. The plea came after prosecutors objected to his offer earlier in the day to enter what’s known as an Alford plea, which a defendant maintains their innocence but concedes that the prosecution’s evidence would likely result in a guilty verdict. He faces up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million after pleading guilty to three felonies and six misdemeanors, on charges he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019. His sentencing is now in the hands of the judge. Joe Biden, meanwhile, has repeatedly said he will not pardon Hunter or use his commutation power to reduce a prison sentence. (NBC News / Washington Post / Politico / New York Times / CNN / USA Today)

Outstanding work from the racist genocide lover Joe Biden. Gotta get one last fuck you to the third world out before he gets out of office.

the racist genocide lover Joe Biden.
It's this rhetoric that got Trump elected against H Clinton because "both are bad" and "at least let's try something else".
I don't support Israel or the US' policy with regards to the Middle East in the least, but saying he's a racist and a genocide lover is flagrant extremist BS which just gives the other side a billion openings for whataboutism.
It's perfectly valid criticism in a functional democracy, it sadly isn't in what passes for it in the USA.

2. Biden has always been a racist who has always supported the genocide of Palestinians. If you don’t like it go talk to Biden.

3. Biden isn’t running for president.

To be fair, that's pretty woke. It acknowledges lesbians and futas exist, AND that they should be allowed to be parents.

My point was more about how the people compiling this list of "woke" had to make sure to play as many of the, uh, deviant games as possible, and bravely suffer through all that horrible LGBTQDEI+ so they could keep it all for themselves nobody else would have to.

Trump’s sentencing for his criminal conviction related to orchestrating an illegal conspiracy to influence the 2016 election will be delayed until after Election Day. The sentencing, which was set for Sept. 18, will instead take place on Nov. 26, Judge Juan Merchan ruled – meaning voters will cast ballots without knowing whether Trump could face jail time for his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Merchan, citing the “unique time frame this matter currently finds itself in,” said he decided to delay Trump’s sentencing from Sept. 18 to Nov. 26 to “to avoid any appearance — however unwarranted — that the proceeding has been affected by or seeks to affect the approaching Presidential election.” Merchan also said he’d rule on Trump’s request to overturn the verdict on presidential immunity grounds by Nov. 12. (New York Times / Washington Post / Wall Street Journal / NBC News / Politico / Bloomberg / CNN)

Trump – baselessly suggesting without evidence that the 2024 election could be stolen from him – threatened to jail his political enemies at a level “never seen before in our Country.” Trump said his lawyers and other allies would be watching polling stations for alleged “cheating,” and “those involved in unscrupulous behavior” will be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again.” Despite recently admitting that he had “lost” the 2020 election, Trump claimed that “rampant Cheating and Skullduggery” by Democrats had affected the outcome of the election. Biden defeated Trump by over 7 million votes. (Associated Press / New York Times / Washington Post / CNN / Salon / NBC News / Axios)
  • Trump proposed mass deportation of undocumented immigrants if he’s elected, promising that it’ll be “a bloody story.” “Speaking at a rally in Wisconsin on Saturday, the Republican nominee falsely claimed that ‘crime is through the roof’ — it is near a 50-year low following a spike when he was president — and that it will get worse. ‘You haven’t seen the migrant crime yet,’ he claimed. ‘It started, and it’s vicious, but you haven’t seen the extent of it yet.’” (Salon / The Atlantic)
JD Vance called school shootings “a fact of life” and argued that schools need to do more to harden their security. “I don’t like this. I don’t like to admit this. I don’t like that this is a fact of life. But if you’re, if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we’ve got to bolster security at our schools,” Vance said following the school shooting in Georgia that left four people dead. Vance, calling the shooting “an awful tragedy” while offering his thoughts and prayers, then characterized gun control efforts by Democrats as an attempt to confiscate guns from American citizens. “The Kamala Harris answer to this is to take law-abiding American citizens’ guns away from them. That is what Kamala Harris wants to do.” Harris criticized Vance’s remarks, saying: “School shootings are not just a fact of life. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can take action to protect our children – and we will.” The Democratic National Committee also responded: “Let’s be clear: no matter what Donald Trump and JD Vance say, tragedies like this do not need to be a ‘fact of life,’ and we don’t just have to ‘get over it’ when Americans, including young children, are violently murdered.” (Associated Press / USA Today / Politico / Washington Post / New York Times / CNN)

Trump held a “press conference” to attack three women who claim he sexually abused them after he attended a federal appeals court hearing related to the $5 million verdict against him for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll. After repeating his false claims about Carroll, for which he was found liable of defamation, Trump began discussing two women who were witnesses in the trial — Jessica Leeds, who accused Trump of groping her on an airplane, and Natasha Stoynoff, who claimed she was physically attacked by Trump at Mar-a-Lago in December 2005. “Frankly, I know you’re gonna say it’s a terrible thing to say, but it couldn’t have happened,” Trump said about Leeds. “It didn’t happen, and she would not have been the chosen one. She would not have been the chosen one.” As part of his extended stream-of-consciousness rant, Trump claimed an old photo of him and Carroll together “could have been AI-generated,” reminisced about how he was “a celebrity for a long time,” brought up “impeachment hoax number one, impeachment hoax number two,” and then insulted his lawyers – saying “I’m disappointed in my legal talent, I’ll be honest with you” while standing right in front of them – and complained that they didn’t bring up “such a famous dress” that was “Monica Lewinsky part two.” The event ended after 49 minutes with Trump taking no questions. (CNN / HuffPost / New York Times / ABC News / Washington Post / Axios / Semafor / New Republic)

Dick Cheney said he would be voting for Kamala Harris, because “there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.” He added, “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.” George W. Bush, meanwhile, does not plan to endorse a candidate for president. (NPR / New York Times / NBC News / Associated Press)

That's as good as when Shadiversity complained about Peach wearing pants in the movie.

House Speaker Mike Johnson doesn’t have the votes to pass a spending bill to avert a government shutdown. Although the House voted 209-206 to approve a rule to debate the funding plan, which includes the SAVE Act, which would bar noncitizens from registering to vote in federal elections, which is already illegal, at least 10 Republicans have indicated they’ll vote “no.” Meaning, Johnson will need Democratic support to pass his plan to push the shutdown deadline into March through the House. Republicans control the House 221-210. The bill, however, is considered dead-on-arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate with Chuck Schumer saying they’d only take up legislation that is “free of poison pills.” The Biden administration also threatened to veto the measure. Government funding runs out on Sept. 30, but Congress is only in session through Sept. 27. (Politico / NBC News / CNN / New York Times / Washington Post / Axios)

The U.S. accused Iran of sending short-range ballistic missiles to Russia to use against Ukraine. “We’ve warned Tehran publicly, we’ve warned Tehran privately, that taking this step would be a dangerous escalation,” U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said. “Russia has now received shipments of these missiles.” Russia is expected to use the shipments within weeks. In response, the U.S., Britain, France, and Germany announced new sanctions to inflict “significant economic consequences for Tehran’s actions,” including additional sanctions on Iran Air, the state airline. U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called for “fundamental changes” to the way Israeli forces operate in the occupied West Bank after the Israeli military said it was “highly likely” that it killed an American woman during a protest last week. Blinken called the shooting “unprovoked and unjustified,” saying the killing of Aysenur Eygi was “not acceptable” and that “no one should be shot and killed for attending a protest.” The IDF previously said it had responded with fire toward a “main instigator” who was alleged to have been throwing rocks, but later said that Eygi was “hit indirectly and unintentionally by IDF fire, which was not aimed at her, but aimed at the key instigator” of the protest. Blinken, however, did not address the Israeli strike on a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza, which killed at least 19 Palestinians, or offer a plan to alter U.S. weapons support for Israel. (Washington Post / New York Times / CNN / NBC News / The Hill / Axios)

The Biden administration condemned Tucker Carlson after he hosted a Holocaust denier on his podcast, calling the interview “a disgusting and sadistic insult to all Americans.” Further, every Jewish Democrat in the House signed onto a joint statement denouncing Carlson for interviewing Darryl Cooper, a “Nazi apologist and Holocaust denier.” Cooper claims that the U.S. was on the “wrong side” of World War II and contends that the Holocaust was not a deliberate genocide, but rather an unintended consequence of the Nazis’ lack of resources to care for the millions they imprisoned in concentration camps, who “ended up dead.” Elon Musk, who promoted the interview on his social media platform, X, called the interview “very interesting. Worth watching.” He later deleted the post. (CNN / Axios / New York Times / Vox)

What’s the verdict on the debate tonight?
Once again the moderators fell down on the job when it came to fact checking the candidates. They did better than the last debate, but I'm sick of people politely telling Trump that the facts don't support what he's saying. When he says racist propaganda like "immigrants are eating people's pets", they should tell him that he's outright lying and that they will cut his mike if he continues to disrespect them by trying to tell such blatant lies.

Taylor Swift's official endorsement

Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.
Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.
I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.
I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.
With love and hope,

Eh I thought they were good. I genuinely think a stern condemnation of the lie followed by cutting the mic would’ve made Trump look a lot better than making him go on his insane rant about the tv people telling them that their dog’s been eaten did.

What’s the verdict on the debate tonight?
Seems like the new channels agree that Harris won pretty conclusively. Which means that for the next couple weeks that Harris won the debate is going to be the narrative which will keep her on the ascent and Trump on the decline.

1/ Trump had a bad night after Kamala Harris called him “weak,” mocked him, and repeatedly laughed at him during their first – and possibly only – debate. Even before the debate began, Harris walked across the stage to shake Trump’s hand – a self-described germaphobe. “Kamala Harris,” she said, introducing herself as the two met for the first time. “Let’s have a good debate.” Trump replied: “Nice to see you. Have fun.” From there, Trump visibly struggled and repeatedly careened between angry rants and bizarre claims. In the opening minutes, Harris outlined the shape of things to come, saying: “You’re going to hear from the same old tired playbook, a bunch of lies, grievances and name-calling,” and that Trump “has no plan for you, because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you.” The point was made clear when Trump was asked about his repeated criticism of the Affordable Care Act and whether he had an alternative plan. “I have concepts of a plan,” Trump replied, offering no additional information. On abortion, Trump claimed that it “took courage” to overturn Roe v. Wade, suggested he’s “a leader on fertilization,” falsely claimed that Democrats support abortions “after birth” and are “executing” babies, and that Harris “wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison.” Harris responded by saying Trump’s rhetoric is “insulting to the women of America” and that “Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.” At one point Harris referenced people at Trump’s rallies experiencing “exhaustion and boredom,” which provoked Trump to shoot back: “People don’t leave my rallies. The biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics.” And then – and then! – Trump veered into a rant about a debunked conspiracy theory that immigrants in Ohio are eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what’s happening,” Trump said, while Harris laughed. Moderator David Muir interjected, saying the city manager told ABC that there have been “no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.” Nevertheless, he persisted: “I’ve seen people on television. The people on television say, ‘My dog was taken and used for food.’” Harris laughed and said: “Talk about extreme.” Later – in his debate with Harris – Trump started talking about Biden, saying: “Where is our president? We don’t even know if he’s the president […] Is he our president? We have a president that doesn’t know he’s alive.” Harris replied: “It is important to remind the former president: You’re not running against Joe Biden; you are running against me.” Harris also used Trump’s continued false allegations about the 2020 election to illustrate how he doesn’t have the temperament to be president, saying: “Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people, so let’s be clear about that, and clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that.” Harris added that world leaders were “laughing at Donald Trump” and saw him as a “disgrace,” while she offered “a new generation of leadership for our country. One who believes in what is possible and one who brings a sense of optimism about what we can do instead of always disparaging the American people.” (New York Times / NBC News / Washington Post / Politico / Associated Press / Wall Street Journal / CNN / ABC News / Axios / NPR / Wall Street Journal / NBC News / Washington Post)

Trump claimed that ABC “lost a lot of credibility,” “took a big hit,” and “should be embarrassed” because David Muir and Linsey Davis fact-checked several of his answers. He added: “I mean, to be honest, they’re a news organization. They have to be licensed to do it. They ought to take away their license for the way they did that.” CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, meanwhile, reported that Trump lied at least 33 times during the 90-minute debate with Harris, who made one false claim. 3/ Harris called for a second presidential debate, while Trump said he is “less inclined” to participate in another one before the election. “Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate,” her campaign said on social media. “Is Donald Trump?” During a post-debate interview on Fox News, Trump said that he’d “have to think about it,” and suggested that Harris wanted a second debate “because she lost,” but added: “Maybe if it was on a fair network.” Meanwhile, Fox News offered to host a debated moderated by Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier on Oct. 9, Oct. 15, or Oct. 16. 4/ Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris, calling the Democratic nominee a “steady-handed, gifted leader,” who “fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” She added: “I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.” Swift signed her Instagram post to her more than 280 million followers: “Childless Cat Lady” — a reference to JD Vance’s past remarks that Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and other Democrats are “childless cat ladies” who “want to make the rest of the country miserable.” Trump responded to the pop superstar’s endorsement, saying he’s not a fan and that “she’ll probably pay a price.” Elon Musk, meanwhile, offered to impregnate Swift, tweeting: “Fine Taylor … you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.” (NBC News / New York Times / Washington Post / CNN / NPR)

6/ Speaker Mike Johnson delayed a vote on his six-month stopgap funding plan to avert a government shutdown after more than a dozen of his Republican colleagues vowed to tank the measure. Johnson said he delayed the vote until next week so he can “build consensus” within his party. The stopgap bill would fund the government through March 28, but it’s paired with a bill backed by Trump that would require proof of citizenship to vote. Democrats favor a three-month extension instead, and view the voting provision as a poison pill, since noncitizen voting is already illegal. Congress needs to pass a stopgap spending bill before Oct. 1 to avoid a federal shutdown. (Politico / The Hill / Associated Press / NBC News / CNN / Wall Street Journal)
