Coronavirus Thread

My county got its first case on Saturday. Then 3 by Sunday, 7 by Monday. 27 today.

I'm starting to think this might not just go away.
Ok never mind guys. The county executive announced that that number isn't likely to increase for a bit.

Amazing what running out of tests does for stopping a virus.

We've been working through breaks to get any and all hospital gear back to them ASAP. It ain't much but it's honest work.

Yesterday I saw a couple of people on FB (no one I was close to, so I didn't get involved) rejoicing over a tweet that Trump was going to send them $1000 and maybe he shouldn't send it to people who #notmypresident in the past. All I could think was, if you think $1000 is going to fix everything, you may be dumber than the orange potato.

State cut the maximum office occupancy to 25%. We have two people working from home but even if we didn't that still means everyone can come in.

Oh, and why i actually came here:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-51955931

Seems like asian countries are now getting new cases from outside by repatriating people who where in countries where it spread after it got or of Asia.

Awesome.
This is happening in Taiwan. We had like three dozen new cases over the last three days, pretty much all from people coming back from overseas.

Have you ever seen twenty three million people call someone a dumbass, pretty much in unison? Because more or less the entire population of Taiwan is condemning certain idiots who thought it'd be a great idea to go on a vacation in Europe.

Welp, some of the local businesses have now closed up. For good. They can't weather the drought, they're just gone. Signs out front with things like, "Thanks for 48 great years!" and the like.

The mayor ordered all bars and restaurants in the city (except for drive thru/curbside/delivery) closed yesterday, and has put a moratorium on all gatherings of more than 10 people.

Boeing is whining about needing a bailout fast or it will go out of business.

Boeing was being fiscally irresponsible to not have 3-6 months of savings for such a situation and they need to bootstraps SOCIALISMCOMMUNISMERRORERROR

Yeah all these big businesses that have been fucking people over for the sake of the shareholders are starting to realize that while stock buybacks are good in times of plenty, when that well dries up there's hell to pay. I'm 100% against these idiots getting a bailout, but I'm also not sure it would be anything less than shortsighted to see airlines, etc. going under. It wouldn't just cripple THEM, it would seriously hamper our ability to travel, move goods & services quickly, etc. So while I'd like to watch them all go bye bye, I think it would be bad in the long run.

If they structure it like Obama did the bailout of GM I think I'd be fine with it. GM paid everything back with interest. But I seriously doubt the republicans would get the same kind of return. In fact, I can see them giving away the house.

Practically every industry everywhere is screaming and yelling they'll need money.
Frankly, if there had ever been a better time to really re-structure the economy after WWII, I can't think of it. EVERY major sector has been impacted. We could change the course of history, bring back the importance of stakeholders instead of shareholders, restore a bit of the balance between labor and capital. Not full-tilt communism, because seriously ugh, but maybe a return to a tax system of the Nixon era would be a huge victory for the normal guy.

Of course, since the White House is occupied by an orange balloon, and politicians this side of the ocean are either of the same capacity or simply cowards, that's not what we'll get. But it's nice to dream. Just like all those messages on social media saying this is proof we can really change things and work towards global warming because it's a bigger danger than corona and going to kill more people. I'm sure it will, but those problems can be avoided with money, so hah.

Airplanes and factories will still exist if Boeing shuts down.
Yeah but not the airlines themselves. ALL of them are potentially going under.

The problem isn't that these companies are so terribly run that they need to be bailed out - which they are - but that the effective barriers of entry for the markets are so formidable that you have to be rich to enter it already. It's not a market that lends itself well to competition. I'm with a lot of economists right now that say that now is the time to nationalize the airline industry like it USED to be.

I had a medical appointment today and I was concerned.

The front door had the following signs:

Only one support person.

No entry if you’ve been out of the country in the past 14 days. Go home and call us.

No entry with fever, coughing or covid 19 related symptoms. They gave a number to call to be referred to a triage/testing centre.

I walked in and the waiting room was empty and there was a new barrier between reception and I.

I was one of the few appointments deemed medically necessary today and everyone else was cancelled outright or helped on the phone. They wanted me to be alone in the waiting room.

I was taken to the back quickly and directly to the doctor.

I asked him to teach me how to do my treatment so I don’t have to go back for a while and he did.

I was really impressed. I was also alone when I left and I saw them go and get an elderly couple and bring them in once I was clear.

Don’t ask about the drug store...

Went to Sam's Club today. Plenty of everything. Still a limit of 2 per member for packages of bottled water and TP, but plenty of everything. And yeah, the cafe was closed.
That's a federal thing. Good thing your mayor is catching up.
We don't cotton to what no beltway libruls tell us 'round here.
Until we decide we do.

Trader Joe's is not accepting bottle/can returns until mmmmaybe April.
They had TP, though. We bought just one package. Not because there is a limit, but because that's all we needed.

For a very scientific but easy-to-understand explanation on the Coronoavirus, watch this. Kurzgesagt is great for exactly this kind of thing.

Welp, the technicians just left. I'll be working from home for awhile. It's a necessary evil. On the bright side, I'll save on gas and bridge passes. And have a little more time because I won't need to spend about an hour a day just commuting.

Even when doing the right thing is presented on a silver platter, republicans cant bring themselves to do the right thing. Poor people get less than middle class because...?

Wait, this is based on 2 year old tax returns. I sure hope no one has had a dramatic income shift in the last two years. :|

GameStop has sent a company memo instructing stores to stay open in violation of state laws, and to tell people questioning the decision that they are “essential retail” because everyone has to be home and need games during this time.

It's shit like this that's why GameStop is the worst and is a company that deserves to join the ranks of Blockbuster Video: dead.

Tell me about it. No bridge tolls, but I'm probably saving $30-35/day in gas/wear/tear/etc just by not commuting.
