Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Nerd Reference alert:

I have gotten so used to dancing around statements my parents make, that I am ready to take up an Oath Rod and become an Aes Sedai.

I've been avoiding Wheel of Time since Day 1.
It started off pretty stock standard, then got interesting, then turned to shit for a couple books when Jordan realized he was riding the gravy train and being paid by the word, then he realized he was dying and it started to get really good again, then he died, and Sanderson did a decent job of wrapping things up using Jordan's notes.

WoT is on my list of things I may never get to.
But as far as how disappointing it might be, I mean, I’ve survived Stephen R. Donaldson. How bad could Jordan be?

Except he copied a bit much from the tv show, but who can blame him, it was really successful...wait, we're not talking about a song of ice and fire? Wait, what time line am I in? Oh, right, that hasn't happened yet. Never mind.

Do. Not. Talk. About. The. Wheel. Of. Time. TV. Show.[DOUBLEPOST=1512072467,1512072437][/DOUBLEPOST]

Specifically, Wheel of Time.

Or don't, it gets pretty bad around book 4-6.

I still have that puppet.

Jordan got carried away with descriptions of things, all things, as in everything. Donaldson got carried away and replaced by a fucking thesaurus, I'm a fairly well read guy, but when I'm having to look up the meanings of words (that could have had a more common word used it it's place...) because they are so freaking far out there. Oh, and depressing, Donaldson got really freaking depressing.

Yeah I understand that, too. I get mine because I have very mild asthma that goes berserk when I'm sick. From what I've heard about this year's flu (based on reports from Australia) it's going to be an ugly one even if you have gotten the shot. Nothing is 100% effective when you're using your best educated guess (may not be the right term) to determine what the strains will be like.
My mother is concerned that I do have the real flu now because I'm still sick after all this time. I'm still exhausted, coughing, have this hideous headache in addition to my migraine and I don't seem to be improving much. I still can't go visit my dad with his open incision and weakened immune system :(

That last part being my rant.

My doctor refusing to help me during my last appointment is also rant worthy though.

Ffffffffffffffff-!

We didn't get paid! No one in my husbands company got paid! They won't get paid until next friday now!

I get it, mistakes happen...but my mortgage comes out today and so does my insurance and I only have just over a hundred bucks in my account. WTF am I going to do????

Update: Insurance is dealt with. I'll have two payments taken out on Jan 1st. Still might get hit with an NSF fee from the bank, tho. Working on it. Mortgage is looking to be a bit rougher. Where we pay biweekly we don't get a 'skip/delay payment' option.

It just had to be December, didn't it? I was planning on starting Christmas shopping today and now I not only gotta wait but I have to worry about simple shit like groceries.

Someone shoot me.

You should be able to pay your mortgage up to 15 days late without penalty or affecting your credit score. Double check with your mortgage company, but it's something we have to do regularly and we still have an excellent credit score, and have never had to pay any late fees.

Thanks for the advice . :) I just updated my post with new info. Turns out, I can't skip or delay because of our payment plan.

I'd ask my dad for money...but my sister recently broke up with her boyfriend and he left her hanging with about 4500 dollars of back mortgage payments (he had been pocketing the money and continually delaying the mortgage). My dad ended up paying it and...and I can't ask my 57 year old father to help me out too after that. Hell, I don't even want to tell him because he's been stressed sick lately. :( I don't wanna add to it.

I have been in that position and I've learned that if you call the people a lot of times they'll move your due date back. I mean, it's only a week. Also, if you DO get an NSF fee from your bank, have your husband take it in to his HR. It might not work, but they MIGHT take care of it for you if you bitch about it loudly enough. They know they fucked up and it's their fault.

If it was due to them making a clerical error then they should even offer to help out with any bank fees. In fact, if you explain all this to your bank, they should understand. Especially if you offer a letter from his employer and all.

Damn it. Bought a Chinese laser cutter because the manual they had online said it would support Adobe Illustrator. Buy it, set it up, get the mirrors aligned after much aggravation, and the program doesn't support Adobe, but just CorelDraw. Damn it all.

I want the opposite, I think. I write geological interpretation software, and it gives you an answer that is for all intents and purposes the Occam's Razor answer (in fact, we call it Occam inversion). But the the thing is, that is an answer, not necessarily the answer. Too many people in this field accept the Occam answer as golden and stop there.

We were lucky, apparently the formats it does allow (.jpg) are REALLY useful. I can scan images or do other things and print off those as well as grab off the internet images. It's great for testing it out!

Rant averted.

OK, so I'm a Belgian owl fan. Just posting this anon so that real life people who know my handle won't run into it.

I was just absent for 3 weeks due to a broken (just cracked, it turns out) wrist. In that time, my superior was to take over my job. Well, I mean, keep things running.
WELL NOPE.
Ok, fine, but surely he managed to keep things moving, just have people follow protocols we'd set up, follow procedures agreed upon with clients and suppliers and such.
WELL NOPE.
Maybe he noticed that I'm useful and some things run more smoothly when I'm there to pay attention and follow up on things.
WELL NOPE.
...At least he didn't actively try to sabotage me or get me fired?
WELL NOPE.

So, the management of the firm is made up of my boss, one other manager, and the CEO. The CEO outranks the other two, they're more-or-less on even footing.
My boss had actually drawn up half the paperwork to throw me out over some bogus claims. The other manager stood up for me and showed the CEO the claims to be complete fabrications. Or, more accurately, errors of my boss and his lackey, who's sadly part of my team, he tried to drop on my head. Well, that backfired. Turns out I've been saving my boss' ass! No kidding!
At the same time, the people in my team finally discovered proof of the long-held belief that the forementioned lackey made his own schedule...and everyone else's. Which people would probably accept, if it wasn't for the fact he hasn't worked a single day shift in the weekend (the busiest shift of the week), more of the nights in the weekend (the calmest and best paid shift of the week) than anyone else, hasn't worked on either Eid-ul-Adha or Id-al-Fitr in four years, never works the day his team plays, and miraculously has both an unlimited gas card and an unlimited phone card from work (which even I don't have!). Yeah, if you're going to make your team's work schedule, how about trying to be fair?
My boss also managed to...Oops...Forget to make invoices for over €800.000 (roughly a million dollars), this year alone. Since we work mainly with construction firms, those invoices are connected to work done on projects already finished, often with their balances totalled and accounts closed out - meaning some of our clients are furious because their books now turn out to be off by thousands of euros, and some flat-out refusing to pay.
All-in-all, the CEO came pretty close to firing my boss, but he's been kept on for the time being. Sadly, there's no trust whatsoever in the team towards him at the moment, and my boss still maintains it's all my fault - I turned the team against him, I've riled them all up, and I've somehow managed to manipulate the other manager into my pocket and made him look bad. Still, since the CEO - according to the other manager - literally said "it's with the Belgian Owl Guy, and you can take it or leave it", my job's pretty secure for now...Except I have a boss who's out for my blood, with one of my team members who's not just in his pocket but actively wants me out and briefs anything I say or do to him in the worst possible light, and most of this I've only learned through "you didn't hear this from me, hushhush" late night phone calls from the other manager - who I don't much trust either. I'm well aware he's painting everything in a light to indebt me to him and get me in "his camp", since he feels cheated and passed by - he's one of the founders of the company and my boss managed to get on the "same" level as him by manipulation and being good at playing office politics.

the atmosphere at my work is just splendid, let me assure you. My boss was sickeningly sweet and friendly and kind to me all day, making jokes, telling me how much I'd been missed, how I shouldn't work too hard on my first day back, etc etc.

I mean...I guess I should be glad someone stood up for me? And that I still have a job? But really, "stress" is an understatement at the moment, I can just barely function at the moment, and i should just have stayed home an extra week 'till things quieted down. Next week - when I'm supposed to be on a holiday - there's a big meeting between the CEO and my team and my boss...very strongly against my boss' wishes - he tried to veto the meeting, but the CEO pushed through because he wants honest and open opinions and different perspectives on how me and my boss work... And apparently, no-one bothered to invite me or keep me in the loop. I officially don't have a clue the meeting's taking place, again, I only know about it through hush hush back channels.

URGH.
