... that's fucking stupid then. PS4 and Xbone have such an increased demand on graphics that it makes the processing power of the new consoles irrelevant?
I mean, it seems fun and all, but Splatoon looks like it might actually run on a Dreamcast.

Nintendo favors high framerate over graphical fidelity. Splatoon can run at 60fps because it doesn't need as much horsepower.

Have you seen a DC game lately? I know you're not a console fan, but come on now.[DOUBLEPOST=1433619386,1433619232][/DOUBLEPOST]
They'll say it was only possible with the new generation of consoles.
Honestly I think a lot of the problem started with the push of games like Gears of War. There was this sudden need to make the games look gritty and gloomy due to the setting and unfortunately a lot of developers latched on and never let go. Throwing a brown/green/etc filter over the camera is a lot easier than actually working to make your setting believable.

As someone that still has (and even sometimes still plays) his Dreamcast, I can say that people tend to overestimate the power of their old machines, because nostalgia makes us remember them as impressive for the time.

So if anyone's curious the Steam Refund thing is working great. I returned a couple games I bought (one on 5/30, the other in March) that I hadn't played much of and the money will go back to my account within a week. They seem pretty forgiving on the return date and overall playtime, at least for now.

It's a bit more streamlined than that, but it doesn't have an enormous graphics demand. I think the only reason it would need a current console is for the liquid effects.

And it's a lot more fun than I expected. I'm not as obsessed with it as my wife (she who is evidence that removing voice chat was a smart move by Nintendo), but I've been playing it most days this past week.[DOUBLEPOST=1433640545,1433640473][/DOUBLEPOST]

I wish the Nintendo eshop had a return policy. I would've returned Code of Princess at 1:05 AM, 25 minutes after I bought it.

(And probably Retro City Rampage DX this week; I'm just not feeling it.)

Their return policy is this:

Situation:

Refund request for digital content purchased through a Nintendo Shop Channel. (For example, incorrect game or DLC was downloaded, content was purchased by accident, you didn't like the game.)
What to Do:

  • We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for erroneous purchases.
  • Please be sure to read the game descriptions and check out the screen shots available through the Nintendo eShop before making purchases.
  • We also encourage you to visit www.nintendo.com for information about the games available for our systems.
  • In addition, many websites make reviews available of games which you can use to make your purchasing decisions.
tldr; too fucking bad, do more research, don't buy wrong games/DLC

Just to see how rusty I am after 30 years, I fired up contra on an emulator tonight and gave it a go. No Konami code, no continues, I made it to the level 7 boss. Not too shabby if I say so myself. I probably could do better if I played it again, but to be honest toward the end there I was starting to find it a bit tedious.

Muscle memory, man. I find myself doing the same paths/moves in old games even 20 years later. The body knows what it's supposed to do, even if you don't remember.

Every time I try to get back into tanking in an MMO I remember why I stopped. Dickbag DPS pulling whatever they want and whining when I don't bother peeling off them, healers trying to DPS while I'm holding upwards of 4+ mobs at once, etc etc.

The opposite happens whenever I try old games. In many of the Mega Man levels, I rarely managed to reach even the boss. Even struggled with, say, early stages in Super Mario World.

This works for me until those GODDAMN PHASING BLOCKS BECAUSE THEY'RE PIECES OF SHIT AND I HATE THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES AND

I tried playing Sonic 1 and 2 years later; despite being those games repeatedly, I do not have the muscle memory for them. Fortunately Sonic 2 is pretty easy anyway.

Jim Almighty, this is all my fault.

See, Jim Sterling makes three types of videos regularly: the weekly Jimquistion, Squirty Plays (basically a first-look Let's Play), and Steam Greenlight Trailers (reacting to terrible Greenlight trailers).

The Greenlight trailers reaction actually resulted in the Five Nights at Freddy's Games being created, when he criticized a game trailer for something else by the same dev.

Anyway, I joked in a comment for one that for all these terrible games in Greenlight - especially for ____ Simulator games - that eventually someone would make a Jim Sterling Simulator. Jim even responded, "I'd play it if it was called The Jimulator."

Thus...

Huh, Hatred was released on June 1 and I didn't even notice. Reviews have been rather negative though, calling the game buggy and a bit of a one-trick pony.

Guess I might get it if it ever goes on an intense sale. Doubt it though.

Totalbiscuit did a wtf is of it. It's not a bad game, there just isn't much meat to it. And the 'controversy' surrounding it was dumb, when really what happens in the game is no worse than anything you can do in other, better games, like GTA.

Except for the execution QTEs, which are more like Manhunt or Space Marine. And yeah, while you can go on a killing spree in GTA, in Hatred, that's literally all there is to do, and whether you do nothing or not, eventually police / military will show up to kill you in Hatred.

TB's WTF Is of it basically shows that the game boils down to:

Shoot everyone
Don't get shot
Do Executions (but turn off the cinematic because it gets dumb and redundant) to get back health

Without the controversy the game wouldn't have even gotten a second thought from most people because it honestly looks boring as shit.

Some of the devs having connections to white supremacy groups still has me not wanting anything to do with it, stupid violence controversy or no.

I was not aware of that, makes the whole thing doubly gross.[DOUBLEPOST=1433873028,1433872567][/DOUBLEPOST]It's unfortunate more people don't cover FF Tactics music because it's some of the best.
