What are you playing?

Psychonauts

Or at least nine tenths of it, because I can't fucking finish the Meat Circus level. There's a part with this netting you have to jump across, but it's on a curve, so it's impossible to figure out how to properly jump. Worse, the double jump only works once in a while.

Fuck it. I give up.
that final level is notoriously difficult, im sorry you had to give up literally right before the final boss. I am a master platformer, I had a lot of trouble!

I know that exact jump. I usually have to do it dozens of times, if not more.

The funny thing is, I've beaten it before...on PC, with an Xbox controller.

I bought it dirt cheap on PS5 and been re-playing it. For whatever reason, I just can't make the jumps in that net area at all. It's just been an exercise in frustration.

I know the PC version got a balance patch at some point that made the Meat Circus easier. I wonder if the PS5 version is emulating the original PS2 version, one that never nerfed the Meat Circus.

Ohhhhh, maybe! The PS2 logo appears when i first load up the game. I assumed they were both the same version.

that would explain a ton, honestly. I also beat it on pc, both before and after that patch, I think at least, I remember it being easier when i played it again to get ready for 2.+

EDIT:
  • For the Steam, Xbox Live, and PSN releases, the level was slightly edited to decrease its difficulty, and more frequent checkpoints were added.
  • That said, while this update was meant to increase Oly's health in the escort section, it only does so for the first part, and his health resets to its original values when he takes off for the second time.

Marvel Rivals

It was free to play, so I thought I'd take it for a spin. In the past, I'd briefly tried a similar game, Overwatch, but never made it past the tutorial out of boredom.

Here, I at least played a live game, as a support class character with Rocket Raccoon. I find I enjoy playing support classes or healers the most in online games because I'm a lousy shot and not aggressive enough to keep up with seasoned players. So playing support means I just pile on the heals and buffs to my teammates, following along like a lost puppy. My team won in this case. I got a few kills in, got killed several times but I don't know what my final ranking was.

It's neat, but games like this just aren't my cup of tea.

Maybe I'll give it another shot whenever they bring in my main man, Daredevil.

Psychonauts (Steam)

Out of curiosity, I re-installed Psychonauts on my PC to see if there was a difference with the Meat Circus.

There definitely was. For one, the camera stays fixed, which somehow helped with that net area. I also noticed the boss didn't bombard you when you were trying to jump up onto some cables before that area. which was also a source of frustration. But whatever other changes they made, I was able to get through that part with absolutely little frustrations by comparison. I got to the final part of the level no problem.

So yeah, I think you're right @figmentPez and @Bones. The version I played on PS5 must be an emulated PS2 copy.

You know, if you are playing Path of Exile 2 and have a character in the Texas server cluster, you can join us...

You don't have to have a character dedicated to that cluster, you just select texas when you log in. But yes, PoE2 is very good.

I'm not very far, I just did Draven and his Consort before that.

Draven I had no trouble with, the consort bone prison was not as sexy as the name lead me to believe and I kept getting stuck in it before my stupid ass realized I could break it. Wasn't too bad after that.

I assume I have a world of hurt incoming though.

Draven as a summoner witch is hell on earth. He doesn't summon any adds so there's no corpses to make more bone constructs, and his many many aoe attacks just obliterate skeletons the moment they revive.

The final boss of Act 1 has like 3 phases. One of them he surrounds all but a very small space of the arena with a cloud of cold mist that will almost instantly freeze you and damage you to death. Meanwhile werewolves keep coming out of the cloud to attack you while he mocks you and occasionally runs through and hits you without warning. The third time he restricts the battlefield I have been unable to dodge past the werewolves due to being slowed and fatigued from rolling so much. So they push me into the cloud and kill me. Each time the boss was almost dead.

So now I'm running back through things trying to get levels and a new build. I really need a frost charm for cold resist but I've got a fire one and haven't seen a cold resist since.

Hey, I just got there, beat the boss first try. Luckily I had a charm that prevented me from being slowed.

Act 2 is... different.

Slime Rancher

It was $2 on Steam and I've had it on my wishlist for a while. I'd already watched a Let's Play, so I pretty much knew what was coming, but I still had a great time. Though playing it for myself made me appreciate, once again, just how much YouTube compression kills video quality.

But now I'm burnt-out on sim, and must move on to other genres.

NeuroVoider

This is a twin-stick shooter rogue-lite. I can't remember how I ended up with it, but I'm playing it until I get all the Steam Trading cards. It's actually pretty fun. The weapons are standard tropes, but there's a variety. It's just not my cup of tea and I suck at it.

Roundabout

I bought this because Kate Welch, and I'm playing it now for Steam Trading cards. It's a weird game that's basically Kuru Kuru Kururin but instead of controlling a rotating stick you control a rotating limo, and there's FMV segments. It's not a bad game, I'm just not really into the genre, and I suck at it.

I didn't realize who I was fighting first time I got to him. Got to the second phase but the hunt ran me over. Then managed him on the second go once I remembered your advice here. Thanks!

POE 2 Finished act 2 yesterday. End boss was a pain until I grabbed more lightning resist then beat it the next try.

The biggest road block was Zalmarath. Random one-shots with the knife thrusts, giant model but you have to hit the arm, a crumbling arena that leads to wonky camera angles and being able to be knocked off it in what is most definitely a bug, giant arena spanning laser blast except for one small safe spot and then halfway through the fight constant waves of adds that will either freeze you or force you out of that spot. More deaths on that thing than any other so far. Eventually, I managed to get past it by just basically hugging the side of the arena right next to him, most of the attacks miss there luckily. Be careful once you beat him, there will likely be another wave of adds that I've seen kill more than a few people after they're done.

I still have nothing lootwise save for one unique I got almost immediately when starting that has garbage rolls and isn't even for my character as well as a recent focus find that is the best thing I've managed to find all game. Took almost 35 levels to get something half good I could use with nice rolls.

Elemental Occult Sorc mostly btw.

I'm now at the end game phase and I can say: It won best RPG of 2024 for a reason.

It's not just a Persona game with a new coat of paint. Even though it has elements of the Persona games it stands on it own.

Geez, I only played two games for a total of two hours this year. I think that might be more than I played in 2023. It's making me question my decision to upgrade my computer.

I've got my eye on this as I'm playing through the Persona games, but man - a $95 CAD starting price point can eat my whole ass, even if it is on sale right now. Absolutely taking the piss.

That sucks, but Atlus games get cheap very quickly after a while. At least the retail versions. It's also possible that they are already working on an improved version. Have you tried the demo yet?

I haven't. I've still got a solid chunk of Persona 5 to get through, and I don't really want to get myself excited about something that I'm 100% not willing to buy at its current price. Definitely hoping that they either cut the price or announce an enhanced release before too long, but at this point I'm expecting it to be at least a year or two before they cut the price to a range I'm willing to pay.

Oh well, I'll play it one day.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

I actually bought this in March, but I've only felt the urge to install and play it now. I've only played about an hour and a half, but so far I like it. There's plenty to say already about the gameplay, the visuals, the designs, the voice acting, etc... but really, the main thing I want to emphasize is...

I HAVE A LIGHTSABER! ^______^

THAT'S RIGHT, A LIGHTSABER! ^__________^

The Outer Worlds
Bounced off this one 20 hours in a number of years ago, picked it back up a week or so ago and finished it yesterday after doing, I think, pretty much everything it has to offer.

Solid game, fun characters, interesting storyline. The last act/scene/level? felt rushed though, which was a shame.

A fun time overall.

I really enjoyed Fallen Order. It borrows heavily from many genres and doesn't necessarily do anything original on its own, but it all comes together really well. Plus, it's a buncha fun with spaceships, lightsabers, and a whole bunch of pew pew pew!

Finished my first playthrough of Jedi: Fallen Order. Long story short, loved it.

The gameplay felt nicely satisfying. I've actually never played any souls-like games before, nor do I play many Metroidvania games, but on the whole the concepts and gameplay were easy enough to pick up. Exploration was generally interesting, with varied environments and interesting locations to visit. Combat was visceral and fun, with the game really letting me feel like a proper Jedi (I got to use a lightsaber! ^________________^). The visuals were also quite nice, with spectacular vistas on the various planets. The cutscenes were also impressive, with some of the best lightsaber choreography I've seen.

The story and characters were good. Story-wise, when I thought about it a bit, it felt somewhat like nothing of true value was accomplished, but then again the real meat of the story is the development of characters like Cal, Cere, and Trilla. Side characters like Greez, Merrin, Cordova etc were also given distinct personalities and satisfying stories. I already had the ending spoiled for me, so I knew that... he... shows up, but playing through that sequence still managed to terrify me a bit.

What I was really, really impressed by, though, was the use of music. The Star Wars movies have always had iconic tunes. The game uses them sparingly, but when recognizable music shows up, oh man the emotional punch is amazing. From the classic Force theme when Jedi-related stuff is happening, to the Order 66 music playing during the corresponding scene, the music added so much to the experience.

All in all, this was a very good game, and I definitely should've played it sooner.

Also Merrin is hot and her accent is adorable.
