I really ain't sure that Pence would have a chance.
I have been making a general observation on elections after this whole mess, and I have come to the conclusion that the candidate being kind of stupid is part of the point. Conservative voters, most times, don't want an educated, reserved candidate. They want someone brash, messy, "down to earth" and willing to "say how it is" with "practical smarts". This is what people wanted in Bush, what they didn't see in people like Dole, McCain, or Romney, and what they saw in Trump stacked to 11. This is why they voted in someone like Tuberville or those QAnoners or that dopey jock kid that took a trip to Hitler's vacation home.
Them being on the lower scale of education and not acting presidential is a feature, not a bug. Pence was able to ride on Trumps wave but I can't see him getting the conservative electorate behind him if he keeps acting like he does.
