Normally I'd agree, except Nintendo has made everything easier with this one. I can't believe they've taken this many steps forward in one generation.

The PSS on the touch screen shows:
- Friends you've registered
- Anyone you've interacted with who isn't your friend
- Random people from around the world

Those random people? You can send them a poke, watch a PR video of their trainer, challenge them to a battle, trade with them. From anywhere in the game, you can get into a random battle with other players, find someone to trade with, or do a Wonder Trade, which is tossing out a Pokemon and seeing what you get back, totally randomized. When you're in battle, a newsreel-style message will pass across the touch screen to let you know if someone is trying to contact you or give you a message. You can hook up voice chat, share pictures ...

The interactivity is so beautifully handled, you would think this wasn't a Nintendo game.

I got Pokemon Y since everyone and their mother (and my wife) seems to want Pokemon X. I'll re-post friend code in this thread tomorrow as I'm starting to lose consciousness, but anyone wanting Halforums 3DS friend codes can always check page 1 of the Animal Crossing thread.

There's a Torchic distribution going on right now via internet that has it holding a Blazikenite which will allow its Blaziken evolution to mega evolve.

Gamestop is also distributing level 100 Shiny Giratinas, but I think that's just for Pokemon Black/White 1 and 2.

SUPER TRAINING.

I just used a large Special Attack punching bag with my Butterfree and her Special Attack went up by 12. That's 12 extra outside the max. For EV Training, that's the equivalent of killing 48 Horseas. This is fucking amazing. Anyone can be competitive now. It's come back from who has hours and hours to waste fighting just the right Pokemon in the wild to move choices, because anyone can bring up their extra stats. I can't believe they finally fixed this. It's fantastic.

You have to do it a couple times before it gives access to honing any stat. The first one is Defense, the second is Special Attack IIRC and then after that they figure you're a bona fide Pokemon soccer coach and will let you decide which stat to raise. The punching bags are self-explanatory as each one says in the name which stat it boosts.

I found out my Chespin is a Timid nature, which means nice Speed, but his Attack is going to rise slower and end lower, and he's a Pokemon that gains Attack type moves. I considered trading him to one of the crazies on GTS once he evolved, but maybe watching Pokemon Origins yesterday got to me--I'm not going to give up on him. I'm going to boost his Attack in the training and make up for the difference, and we're gonna stick it out. Especially with his pincushion second evolution, which he's just become.

Got a female Squirtle, didn't have to reload either :D.

I know females also pass on moves, but with all TM's being reusable now I don't know if that's as big a deal as it used to be.

That depends when Ditto becomes available. In Gen 4, they were incredibly rare--had to be gotten with Poke Radar after you beat the Elite Four. In Black/White, non-existent. I think they were available pretty early in Black/White 2, but I didn't get too far in those games. In general, it's easier knowing you can get more of what you want.

I'm not sure about passing on the Ability. I know if a male holds an Everstone there's a 50% chance of passing on the nature. Or there was. X/Y have changed a lot of the mechanics and since the release was essentially simultaneous around the world, there aren't months of translated documents from Japan to give an instruction guide. Which I'm fine with.

At least caves now have dark patches that are akin to the grass in other areas, so not every step will cause an encounter.

Oshawott is a starter Pokemon, meaning it will never be found in the wild. This doesn't mean it won't appear at some point in the game. For example, shortly after the first gym in X/Y, you can pick one of the starters from the first gen of games. Something similar may happen later for 5th gen starters like Oshawott, but since the games were released worldwide at the same time, it's kind of a mystery what will happen later on.

A Game Freak spokesperson said that ALL the Pokemon from previous games will be in this one, but it's unknown whether he means all wild Pokemon, or genuinely all including starters and legendaries.

So far most of the Pokemon I've run into have either been gen 1 (Red/Blue) or gen 6 (X/Y), but I have seen the Pan monkeys from gen 5; they're more common here than in Black/White. In any case, I'd recommend still checking it out if you liked Black/White--it just means a lot of different Pokemon you're less familiar with, which can be a good thing, and as I've said earlier in the thread, Nintendo has improved much of the game significantly.

That bank thing is going to be useful. I've got a few legitimately hardcore trained fourth gen Pokemon that would still be very relevant in the competitive battling scene, including my prized Jolly Tyranitar. Got most of every gen's starters on transfer over, too.

I have a feeling that the "all the Pokemon" statement refers to having them all animated in the new style, not that they would all somehow appear in game to see or catch.

In December, they're launching two Pokemon apps, one of which is a paid service, to store Pokemon in a cloud and transfer to XY. So yes, you will be able to, but not immediately.

Possibly. And I have a competitive team too, so I feel you, but I'm glad they aren't releasing the transfer app until December so that people who want to play now can't just smash through the game with already-trained Pokemon.

I am seriously hoping that the random number generator can't be cracked this gen. RNG abuse is how competitive battling become so inaccessible to casual players. Now that it's easy to track EVs, and we know how natures affect stats, anyone can put a competitive team together. It would be nice to keep it that way. Plus, Smogon and Seribbi are noticing a stat creep in the new gen, so that could equalize things once the flood of power-trained Pokemon comes in December.

I know Smogon hasn't cracked the RNG yet, and the 3DS AR device simply doesn't work. I'm just hoping Nintendo has truly shut that down. I know it won't happen, but it would be nice.

I thought only traded Pokemon wouldn't obey beyond your range.

The levels seemed skewed towards being kind of high in this one thanks to the new Exp Share. My guys are around 20 and I'm not at the second gym yet. Not sure if that's good or bad--this is the first Pokemon game where I haven't had some kind of guide in the house since the one my wife ordered won't get here until the 22nd.

We did the starter swap, so I'm technically on my 5th game. My original Quilladon (Chespin), Wartortle and Charmeleon stopped obeying me after thirty, as a result of the 2nd gym being kind of a long time after the first, EXP Share, and traded Pokemon experience boost.

Pokemon is still akin to printing money for Nintendo. I'm sure they saw a nice boost in 3DS (and now 2DS) sales because there are a lot of people who only buy Nintendo handhelds for Pokemon.

Nope, it's still getting rolled with random natures and IV's (or at least natures, not sure about IV's) and there have been posts on other boards of people who have rerolled (by soft-resetting after recieving the gift) until they got a female. But I didn't.[DOUBLEPOST=1381721290,1381721236][/DOUBLEPOST]Although, if males can pass on abilities now, then hoping for a female isn't as important.

Also, is anyone else getting an occasional black screen lock when you close the 3DS and open it back up? I experienced it in the early game a few times, but I've noticed that if you're just standing in place, it won't happen.

On the bright side, I managed to get my modest Fennekin. Best nature for that one. SR'ed a couple times. Interestingly, the starters can be female this gen.

And I won't be getting my hands on this until December at the earliest. *shakes fist*

And you know what, this might sound elitist, but I'm actually kinda sad they made power-training more accessible. Going into the nitty gritty of the natures and IVs and EVs in the previous generations, and finally breeding and training a competitively viable pokemon, gave a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I still have very fond memories of my Emerald team, and how it could basically kick the crap out of anyone I link battled with.

The old methods of EV training still work, and are actually faster than the super training minigames. Super Training just made it much more accessible to the everyday gamer. Plus, the ability to unlock a special punching bag to wipe out EV's is much more forgiving if you screw up.

I got a level 1 speed boost torchic in a wonder trade, so female ones have to exist, because -someone- is breeding them. I also got a fennekin in a wonder trade, which also looked like a breeding reject. I'll still take it!

In other news: HOW FUCKING LONG DOES IT TAKE AN EGG TO HATCH THIS GENERATION! I'm up to my ass in bagon eggs, and I can't get a single one to hatch. I don't remember it taking nearly this many steps.

Guess I'm going to have to level up a fletchling.

Oh, it's tons of shit. Lots of scatterbugs and zigzagoons. But it seems people have taken to throwing their breeding outcasts out into the wonder void, and sometimes you can get lucky.

I've had none of these issues and I've been opening and shutting a ton. The only annoyance I've had is that when I close and open, it disconnects me from the internet--which makes sense, since the system is in hold mode.

It's weird. I haven't had it happen after the first twenty minutes or so. This hasn't happened with any other games, but I think I figured it out. The Internet disconnect seems to be the cause. I toggle it off and on, and I'm back in business.

So I hatched 7 Chespin eggs after borrowing my daughter's female, and got 6 dudes. I have 3 left after throwing 3 into Wonder Trade if anyone wants. :p One is modest, one is Serious, one is Hardy. All have Overgrow as their inane ability and Tackle, Growl, and Rollout.

I was pretty happy with the Bulbasaur I got but that is a nice catch, for you anyway, Abra guy not so much. Been doing my part to release any fodder and pump back in some decent things.

Hmm, looks like a special attacker, but with high HP, so it can probably tank a hit or two. Its ability will also help it hit even harder. Not very impressive speed though, so it'll probably be played as a wallbreaker, probably holding a choice item, instead of a late-game sweeper.

I have a very hard time with Pokemon games though. I have this thing where I need to level all the Pokemon as I go, while I *should* just pick my favorites and level those. I never make it very far in the Pokemon games because of this problem, but I'm trying to not do that this time around.
Also, some of these evolutions are terrifying... I started with a cute fox and now I have a sassy furry. Also, an adorable bird just turned into a walking penis. It's terrifying and I should have stopped them from evolving.

You have to get to the breeding center and stick either a male and female Pokemon in, or a Pokemon and a Ditto. The offspring will be the same species as the mother Pokemon.

To clarify, the breeding center is the daycare center, and it's right square in the middle of the map. You'll run past it as soon as you get past the Snorlax blocking the main road.

You can store up to two pokemon at the daycare center, and the center will level them up over time (though you don't get to choose what moves they learn while they're doing this). If you store two pokemon of opposite genders (or one pokemon and a ditto) -and- if they are in the same egg group (you'll have to look these up) then after awhile they might produce an egg. The species the egg hatches into is always the same as the female pokemon, unless its a ditto, or unless you're breeding pokemon that can only be 1 gender. You can talk to the guy outside the daycare center, and if an egg is produced, he'll give it to you. "Time" passes in the game whenever you take a step, so if you're waiting for your pokemon to do the deed, run around outside (or better, roller blade/bike around to go faster) and then check back in periodically to see if an egg has been produced.

Once you have the egg, you have to hatch it. This also takes time, which is again steps. Just keep it in your party and run around. Different pokemon have different lengths of egg cycles, some will take longer than others. If you have a pokemon with FLAME BODY ability in your party, such as a Fletchling that has been leveled up to lvl16 and evolved, then half the number of steps are needed to hatch the egg.

There's a bit more to it than that, but those are the basics and should get you started. Check out a pokemon breeding guide to find out how to breed pokemon with specific moves they couldn't ordinarily get, how to better get that perfect nature you're hoping to achieve, and so on.

Yeah, but fletchling's lvl16 evolved form has flame body, and it's one of the very first pokemon you can catch. That's why I only mentioned it. It's a beginner's guide... I didn't even talk about IV's!

That's from the Pokemon's nature, isn't it? Red means the boosted stat, blue means the reduced one. Generation 5 had that feature too.

You can now catch eevee's in the wild if anyone is in dire want of one, on route 10. If you are looking to get a Sylveon, catch one at level 19 there. It should know baby doll eyes, then as mentioned earlier it's just a matter of maxing all the pokemon aime bars and leveling.

You can restrict legendaries from showing up in trades during your searches by excluding "Special" pokemon in the options of the pokemon menu in the gts.

Evidence might be building for that being true. Game Freak did state they are doing more to discourage hacking this gen. Something like this would certainly do it.

You can request anything from any generation in the GTS just by typing in the pokemon's name. Doesn't mean they're available.

Searching for pokemon to trade on the GTS is... well, not good right now. I wanted a ditto, and the only people trading for them were wanting fricken legendaries and stuff.

I had much better results just by putting a squirtle on the GTS, and asking for a ditto for it. Five minutes later I checked in on it, and someone had already fulfilled the trade.

So if you're looking for a specific pokemon, be proactive and offer up something for it. Tons of people are scouring the GTS right now, it really favors those trading than those looking for trades.

So...Eevee are fairly common right outside of the town with the second gym. They're also great on the GTS to get more starters. I'm sitting on all three of the new ones, and I think I'll work on the other originals.

Used a Kanghaskhan to get that Ditto. The version exclusive Pokemon are also great trade fodder. Jesus, GTS is great.

Yeah, I just looked it up. Breeding with a ditto is no different from breeding with an opposite gender pokemon (with the exception that species will always be of the non-ditto) so gender is still going to be the same chance as whatever the ratio is for that pokemon. Which is right around 10% females for most of the starters.

As far as I can tell, passing on a nature is 100% with an everstone. I've used it a ton.

My starter was almost to his final evolution by the second gym, but the distance between the first few gyms is much further in this game than past pokemon games. The gyms themselves seem to play a more minor role this time around, and you only really go back to beating them towards the end.

Passing natures with an Everstone used to be 50% in Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. From Heartgold and Soulsilver onwards, it's 100%, including all of Generation 5 and presumably Generation 6.

Unless, of course, both parents are holding Everstones, in which case I believe the nature is randomly chosen between the two parents' natures, with a 50% chance for each. Also, if you do this, you're an idiot. :p

Yeah, it is. I kinda like how the game is right now, where no one (as far as I can tell) can cheese up the perfect stats possible. Eventually people would breed out the genetically perfect pokemon, which will lead to more, and it will have been the result of likely thousands of hours of work... and also japanese people.

But as someone that's never going to play competitively anyway, when the flood gates open up and the genetically crafted supermon begin to invade, might as well join them.

There's only one save file, this has been the case for every pokemon game. It makes it impossible to have multiple savegames to capture the same pokemon multiple times for trading.

So, in one of the towns towards the end (it's the one with a giant sundial) there's a house with an old man inside. The old man says he's been lonely ever since his wife died, and wants to know if he could look after one of your pokemon for you. He wanted one level 5 or under, so I gave him one of the spare bulbasaurs I'd bred.

Every now and then I'd go check on them, to see what was up with this guy. And he'd always say something like "I'm having so much fun with bulbasaur, I feel young again! Would you like him back?" And since I didn't want to empty my party to make an open slot, I was always like nah, keep playing with him.


I went back to the city today to check the hidden power of a pokemon, but entered the wrong house...

It was the old man's house, but it was empty, except for a pokeball on the ground. Inside the pokeball was my bulbasaur, with a note from the old man. He wrote about how happy he was to have a companion until the end...

Dammit pokemon... I was not expecting to feel.

If you download the game onto the 3DS through the Nintendo eshop, then you can switch out SD cards for each individual player (you'll have to download it onto each SD card, but that doesn't cost extra). The catch is that you'd have to buy SD cards then instead of Pokemon cartridges.

So, it seems like female pokemon still pass on their ability the majority of the time, -however- this generation, males WITH A HIDDEN ABILITY can still pass it on. I've tested this with the event speed-boost torchic, which were all male, by breeding it with a ditto. It's produced 4 eggs so far, 1 female with blaze, 1 male with blaze, 1 female with speed boost, and 1 male with speed boost.

The neat thing about pumpkaboo is that they come in different sizes, and the size does effect their stats.

That said, yeah, Gourgeist is a perfectly decent pokemon. Ghost/Grass is an interesting type combination.

Well, Wondertrade and the GTS are dead now. Reports are coming in from all over that people are getting Mystery Eggs through wifi trades. Apparently, the 3DS has finally been hacked, and traded hacked Pokemon show up in the box as a Mystery Egg, a devastating error worse than Bad Eggs. These reproduce in the box, corrupting and overwriting everything in that box. There is no way to get rid of them. They cannot be released, and some are claiming that the overwrite issue spreads to all your PC boxes, wiping out the entire PC storage.

If you get that egg, DO NOT SAVE. It will ruin your game!

Edit - Shit, don't trade at all! The save before wonder trading actually locks the new Pokemon into your game - that includes Mystery Eggs!

Edit - Double shit! Restarting your game with a new file doesn't get rid of the Mystery Egg. Nintendo needs to patch this, or shit will hit the fan tremendously hard. As for the assholes who unleashed this shitstorm by hacking the game's programming, I hope you get one of the worst cases of hemorrhoids in recorded human history. You've potentially ruined one of the most fun, social games Nintendo has ever produced.

More confirmation on how this is happening.

Unfortunately it seems that the mystery eggs from wonder trading aren't glitches. :[

Two weeks in, and people have managed to hack the game. Basically, people can use Wonder Trade and their internet to induce specific wonder trades. This allows them to give themselves pokemon, or send out pokemon via wonder trade, some times resulting in a bad egg.

Edit. This might not be a hacking case. The first documented instance of this happened three weeks ago on release day. It may be some sort of error related to the Internet data exchange during Wonder Trades. This could be a glitch. The GTS does not appear to be affected by this. It is also extremely rare, with few cases reported. But there could be folks who just haven't reported it...

It's not hackers. There were reports that people were trying to manipulate their Internet connections to effectively clone their Pokemon, and that MIGHT have been related. The most likely theory is that midway through a Wonder Trade, the other person lost their connection - happening in the briefest of instances - and that corrupted the data in between the data checkers that occur during a WT. This explains why the GTS has been unaffected. The data is put online and traded in the GTS servers before being returned to the player's game. These mystery eggs reports total barely a handful, out of over 4 million games sold.

Wonder Trade is basically 99.9999999% safe, though. Smogon seems largely unconcerned.

Edit - Just finished my first breeding project, a five perfect IV Adamant Mawile with Intimidate. The mega form, after a single Swords Dance, can knock out most competitive Pokemon in one shot.

Mewtwo's mega evolution, for example, can have base attacking stats of 190 or higher. Contrast that to the previous record holder, Deoxys-A, who has attacking stats of 180 and tissue paper defenses to compensate for it.

So... are Mega Evolutions basically an "I win" button?

EDIT: Holy crap I just realized Mega Gengar gets base 170 special attack (equal to Kyurem-White, from Generation 5), as well as the Shadow Tag ability. That's even scarier.

I have a mega-gengar on my team. It's pretty nice, but you do have to watch out for earthquake, as gaining shadow tag (which is awesome) means you lose levitate.

Mega evolutions aren't an I-win button. You have to transform into the mega evolution (though it does have priority) and you also have to be holding the appropriate mega-stone, meaning you can't use an item on a pokemon you want to mega-evolve. You can also only mega evolve once in a battle, so you can't run two mega-evolutions together.

Because the mega-evolution is an activation, you can switch out before it takes place. If you see a gengar switch in, and you think it's going to mega-evolve and lock you in with shadow tag, then switch out to something that can handle it before it transforms.

Mega Mawile has Huge Power, plus a base 105 attack stat. Mega Garchomp gets Sand Force, and base 170 attack, so he's even scarier when partnered with Tyranitar now. Speaking of whom, Mega Tyranitar is also scary, with base 164 attack, as well as incredible defensive stats. Weather has been nerfed this gen. Drought no longer causes endless sun, it's only sunshine for 5 turns. Ninetails is still the better choice for sun teams, because it doesn't require you to use up your mega evolution slot, and Mega Charizard Y's fire/flying combination still means it loses half its health to stealth rock.

Well, my second breeding project is turning out to be much more difficult than my first. I've managed to get the right combination of Timid and Protean on Froakie, but I've really had to hunt down some perfect IVs to fill things in.

Honestly, it's a good thing that the "baby" Pokemon come with three perfect IVs. I've been using some Mantines to boost up those perfect IV counts.

It only took me a few hours to breed a perfect IV torchic (well, perfect in everything but special attack). Just get a friend with dittos in their safari zone. I went out, caught a ton of dittos, and was able to whittle them down to a handful that had 3 perfect IV's each

Got my Ditto FC!

This Froakie project of mine is a real pain in the ass. I've got the necessary ingredients - two parents with 4 perfect IVs each, the Everstone and the Destiny Knot, but it just won't give me that five perfect IV Froakie I'm after. Come on! The Mawile project took just half of an afternoon! I'm going on four days now!

Edit - Project Froakie is finally a success! However, I have a small pile of Froakies with four perfect IVs, most of them Timid with Protean. Anyone interested?

Update on the bad egg thing:

Turns out it was the person's 3DS or SD card. They purchased versions of both games and it happened consistently to that person. It's not a problem of a Pokemon glitch or the Wonder Trade.

Beat the Elite Four, Champion, and the parade. I don't know why they decided to cram most of the story between the 7th and 8th gyms. Black/White did a good job of spreading things out. There was pacing and ups and downs. This was kind of like ... nothing most of the way, then EVERYTHING, and then back to going to be champion, like it was an interlude. Pokemon games have done that before, but usually the stories aren't very good anyway. Black/White raised the bar. I wouldn't mind if this was just a crappy "Team conquer the world" story either, but the story and its background are actually pretty good. I don't know how it is in X, but in Y ...

Lysander feels Pokemon are too beautiful to exist in a world where humans will exploit them, so he's going to kill all the Pokemon.

That's fucked up. Then there's the stuff with AZ. I feel like this was a good story that was poorly told. It doesn't ruin the game for me, but I had come to expect more after 5th gen. Oh well.

Now time to pass my Pokemon over to my wife's file and restart with a Nuzlocke!

In Y, the story goes...
Lysander is going to use Yvetal to power a super weapon originally created by AZ to annihilate most humanity and completely wipe out Pokemon to prevent overpopulation from eventually destroying the world. He makes the case that the world is beautiful, resources are getting more and more limited, and people are far too dependent on Pokemon.

I have a feeling that with the new Exp. Share, a Nuzlocke will be a lot easier this gen.

Y and X have the same; just different Legendaries. I wasn't sure if Xerneas made a difference, but my wife says no.

You can still die pretty easily even with the Exp Share, but it should make leveling up replacement Pokemon easier. Though right now I'm torn over whether I want to nix this playthrough. I mostly do, but I'm also having fun catching Pokemon again, which I'd largely given up on since I was going to restart after I beat the game anyway. I wish Game Freak hadn't keyed your Pokemon data to your 3DS so you can't just download the game on multiple SD cards, but I guess they did that so you can't have multiple save files without buying multiple copies of the game.

Interesting developments.

After not encountering a shiny since Gen 2, I've acquired two in as many days. I managed to breed a 5IV shiny Larvitar (not in Sp Def, though - agh!) and I caught a shiny Nincada in the Safari.

Been trading with Smogon folks, putting my Maison/online team together. Just need to start EV training. Gotta get some more battle points, and then I'm off horde-hunting!

I feel like I've cooled on this Pokemon game as fast as I have with others and I was expecting to cling to it more. Really wishing I'd bought the physical copy now since you can't back up your game, meaning I keep it on my SD card or lose what I have. The Nuzlocke for this is kind of a joke--the game is too easy compared to its predecessors.

I love the online conveniences, the new graphics--it's a great Pokemon game. But I feel they took a couple steps back from Black/White and I'm drifting back to Shin Megami Tensei games now that I've finished Pokemon Y only one time. I'm on my 5th playthrough of Devil Survivor.

This normally happens with Pokemon games. I'll play hardcore for the first month or two after a game comes out, and then lose interest in it for a while. I guess I expected it to be different this time.

Eh, I'm feeling more into it than the last three gens. Breeding has become so accessible this go around that I can actually get the builds I wanted to create in the past. It's a hell of a lot easier, and I plan on diving into online battles once I put a nice stable together.

Ok! Got the game, fired it up, so far so good! I can only play during my commute though, so I haven't gotten very far yet.

Also, a brief browse at Bulbapedia tells me that the Pokemon you get in this game follow a more balanced difficulty curve than in BW2. In Black 2, within the first few towns, I could get my hands on Riolu, Sewaddle, Magnetite, Drilbur, etc. All of these have kick-ass final evolutions (well, ok, Leavanny's merely decent instead of awesome), which meant I could pretty much use them through the whole game. In Pokemon X though, I'm hard pressed to find any Pokes in the first seven routes with attacking stats that are higher than base 100. I foresee training up Pokes as I go, and swapping them out as I catch better ones. Croagunk on Route 7 looks like a good candidate.

Fletchling appears in the very first areas you start in, and eventually evolves into Talonflame, one of the strongest pokemon of this generation.

It gets Flare Blitz and Acrobatics, two incredibly strong moves. It also has Flame Body, which can burn an opponent after a physical attack, or Gale Wings, which makes flying moves (including Roost) priority moves basically guaranteed to go first.

Smogon has a wealth of analysis on the new Pokes in their forums; you should check that out.

I know the ability changes. I'm building a sun team and have a ninetails for drought. The Charizard will be benefitting from solar power if he gets to come out while the sun is still out, and can then mega evolve if he needs to refresh it.

Ok, I no longer need solar power. I was able to borrow one from a friend, and now I have managed to breed a 5IV solar power modest charmander just waiting to be able to wreck shit.

I now have a dought ninetails, a megacharizard y ready to get training, and am currently breeding a chlorophyll bulbasaur. I might throw in a harvest treverant just to abuse sun as much as possible, and a rapid spinner to keep stealth rocks from killing my charizard, but I foresee gyrados being a problem, since I don't have any way to deal with a water/flying at current. Maybe a donphan, who can also carry ice moves for dragons. I've also got a 5 IV speed boost blaziken sitting in the wings, I might swap him in for something.

Anyone have any suggestions? This is the first time I've really put together a themed team.

Hmm. You should have something with Thunder. Rain teams are sure to still be around, and Thunder hits 100% of the time in rain. It also helps take out those pesky Rotom Ws. Gyrados also gets knocked out in one shot from most Thunder hits.

Keep in mind dragons are weak to dragons, and Charizard can learn Dragon Pulse as an egg move. Donphan ice attacks won't be strong enough to take out real threats. Excadrill makes a much better spinner, since he's fast and hits like a truck.

So I figured out how to use Wonder Trade (I know, I know, it's not exactly hard) and as a test, I sent out a Pidgey and Zigzagoon. Got a Charmeleon and a Froakie back. :eek:

Neither of them have their hidden abilities, but still... Wonder Trade is awesome. :D

I've gotten some good stuff from the GTS, but only by offering a pokemon and asking for what I want in return. Trying to browse the stuff for trade is crazy if you don't want to trade a legendary for an eevee.


Also, Sun Team Update:

So far I've got ninetails (for drought support), a solarpowered charizard Y (abusing solar power while sun is out, and mega-evolving if he needs to bring it out himself), a chlorophyll venusaur, a rapid spinning mold breaker excadrill, and a sitris berry holding harvest Trevenant. The last slot is one I'm debating on. The idea behind a sun team seems pretty offensive based, so I could add in a dragonite for further power, or a greninja for U-Turn, spikes (which treverant can spinblock), and ice beam for dragons, or a rotom-W to help handle gyrados and talonflame.

If you're running a sun team, you'd probably really hate for a rain inducer to come in and ruin your day, so I suggest a Pokemon capable of punching holes in opposing rain teams. To that end, Rotom-W seems like the best bet.

My pokemon breeding puppy mill is now in full operation. I have several dittos with at least 3 perfect IV's each (and one with 4!) as well as a ditto of EVERY nature.

Every last one caught by me, because goddamn people want crazy shit for dittos on the GTS.

I really don't want to admit just how long this took.

Adamant, one of the most popular natures, seemed to be the rarest to get, the RNG gods just were not kind to me. I ended up using an adamant Mr Mime to breed an adamant Abra with synchronize, and used it to catch an adamant ditto.

Good news! I found my first shiny EVER! (and yet I've contracted pokerus twice!)

Bad news, it was a shiny zangoose in a horde of serviper.

The snakes killed it before I could kill the snakes :(

Dude, that's not easy. That's a perfect competitive Pokemon, and a very versatile one at that. Hell, I've got two 5IV Larvitars pumping out eggs constantly, and I've yet to get a perfect. A 5IV shiny, yes, but not perfect.

I've actually bred two perfects, myself - an Adamant Marill and a Jolly Gible...not exactly ones that can take full advantage of that.

Oh, I'm not going to look a perfect IV pokemon in the mouth, but it would still be nice if it was one that could breed and spread that genetic wealth around. I don't seem to have much trouble creating 5IV pokemon with my ditto mill. I've managed a 5IV Venusaur, Charizard, and Blaziken so far, and haven't been bothered to take the time to make more.

Everyone keeps telling me that weather teams are dead this generation. To that, I say ha! I'll show them!

Breeders dump their spitbacks on Wondertrade because it's just less of a loss than releasing them. Nowadays, it's not unheard of to empty a box of 3/4IV Pokes on Wondertrade. I've done it multiple times, even throwing out flawed 5IV dudes.

It seems the best time to hit it is weekday nights. Lots of kiddies are on in the day and the weekends, throwing out piles of route 2 stuff. I don't begrudge them, but I kinda want a chance at getting a couple back that could jump start a breeding project of my own.

I've been doing the restaurant battles to level pokemon and earn gold (so much gold) but I swear they're built to troll you as hard as they can.

I've been doing the rotation battles, and the gimmick is to win the most money, you have to win on a specific turn, usually turn six (these are 3v3 battles). So to get the best score, the killing blow has to be delivered on turn 6. Easy, right?

BUT EVERY ENEMY POKEMON HAS PROTECT :rage:

I've reached a point where the stuff I randomly get on Wonder Trade tends to not be better than the stuff I send out now. "Oh you gave me a Volbeat there? That's cool I guess, except I sent you an Onix, who is demonstrably more awesome..."

On the other hand, I managed to catch a Bagon on Route 8, so I plan on breeding a bunch and then sending them out on Wonder Trade. Sort of repaying the good karma I've enjoyed on it.

I was grinding games in the battle maison for BP, and came up again an enemy Lapras. Mega Charizard Y uses solar beam... and misses. TWICE!

This move has 100% accuracy, and I wasn't under any effects of lowered accuracy. What could have caused this?

Scraggy's on route 5 also give attack EV's, though aren't as super common as bellsprouts and weepinbells, though. They appear alongside gulpins for hp, though.[DOUBLEPOST=1386969378,1386969331][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh, also trevenents in the maze place before pokemon village, they give attack ev's and it never rains there.

Worst thing is, I was EV training, and that desperate grab to get the shiny threw my progress off. I can fill out the rest, but I'm not popping Reset Bags in the Super Training screen. I'm taking a new approach now, trying to crossbreed some EV reducing berries. I only need one type, so it shouldn't be that hard to get it.

I'm not in any hurry - things will really get fun when the Pokebank opens at the end of the month.

Unless you don't have the power items (or pokerus, in which case I can send you an infectious mon), I'd just pop the reset bag. EV training only takes like ten minutes.

Ok, so I got my sun team prepared. Tell me what you guys think of this. I've never built competitive battle teams before, so I don't know shit about teambuilding.

Spoilered for length (that's what she said)

Rotom-W, calm (special defense) nature with leftovers

HP and special def evs.

will-o-wisp, thunder wave, volt switch and hydro pump.

I usually lead with this guy. He doesn't really fit the sun theme I was going for, but I wanted a strong special tank that could switch in to take hard water and other special hits, as well as act as a status inflictor. Will-O-Wisp is there to take the punch out of physical attackers (and makes him able to tank them pretty well as well) while thunder wave is there for pokemon that can't be burned, as well as speed demons that need to be slowed, while hydropump is there to give him some offensive oomph. Volt switch is of course a great stab attack, and since rotom is a bit slow, allows him to absorb a hit and then switch in to another pokemon for free.

Sunny Day, Will-O-Wisp, Fire Blast and Toxic

My sun setter. Sunny Day is there to help confirm that sun stays up, able to counter a rain dance or refresh the sun in the strange even that Ninetails remains in long enough for the sun to set. I don't expect her to last very long, she's mainly there to switch in when possible, and maybe poison or burn a pokemon along the way, while packing a powerful fire blast to avoid being made useless by taunt.

Excadrill, Moldbreaker with Adamant (attack) nature, holding an air balloon. (EVs currently uncertain)

Rapid Spin, Earthquake, Rock Slide and Swords Dance

The other pokemon that doesn't really fit the sun theme, he's here purely because I needed a rapid spinner. Truth be told, I'm at a bit of a loss what to use him for other than that. He does have a nice electricity and poison immunity, as well as being able to switch in to take an earthquake for free up until his air balloon gets popped. Other than that, I've given him earthquake to use as a powerful stab attack, rock slide is there in case he gets stuck against a flying type (levitate won't stop him thanks to moldbreaker), and swords dance is there so that maybe he can pose a serious threat if he goes unchecked? This guy doesn't really inspire me all that much, I'm thinking about replacing him, maybe with a defogger since I don't run any hazards myself.

Now for the pokemon I built this team around:

Venusaur, Chlorophyll with Life Orb, Timid (special attack) nature.
Special attack and speed ev's.

Growth, Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb and Sleep Powder.

This thing is an absolute beast. Under the sun, he's incredibly fast, and with life orb hits like a truck. Ideally, he'll come in when he's able to set up a growth, which gives him +2 to special attack if the sun is still out, with giga drain acting as his primary attack (which also negates the life lost through the life orb). Sludge bomb is his other super powerful stab attack, and obliterates fairies while covering the types that resist grass. Sleep powder is there to help secure a kill, set up a chance to use growth, or just give him a fighting chance if the sun is about to set, because his speed isn't that great outside of the sun (unless the foe is paralyzed, of course).

Mega Charizard Y, modest with a charizardite Y, Solar Powered ability (though Drought when mega evolved)
Special attack and speed ev's.

Heat Wave, Solar Beam, Dragon Pulse, Focus Blast (or maybe roost?)

Two special sweepers? Why not. Mega Charizard Y doesn't need any setup under the sun, able to obliterate near everything with heatwave, while one-turn solar beams make short work of any water types that might try to oppose him, and focus blast is there for those super tanky normals. Dragon Pulse rounds out his type coverage, giving him an effective answer to dragons. If he can come in while the sun is still out, Solar Powered will still allow him to sweep with impressive power, while still keeping the ability to mega evolve to bring the sun back out if it sets. Because solar power is going to be sapping his health, I might replace focus blast with roost, but he's pretty fragile as is, so it might not make much difference.

Trevenant, Impish behavior with Sitrus Berry, Harvest ability
Def and HP ev's with some attack thrown in to give him punch.

Leech Seed, Will-O-Wisp, Horn Leech and Shadow Claw.

I fucking love this thing. He acts as my physical defensive tank. Will-O-Wisp is there to make physical attackers even more useless while providing annoying, constant damage, and leech seed is always annoying while adding to his survivability. Horn Leech is a pretty powerful stab physical attack, with shadow claw for stab and type coverage. With leech seed and burn up, he's able to attack with horn leech and regain tons of health each turn, while also chipping away at tough opponents. Harvest gives him a 50% chance to recover his sitrus berry every turn, giving him even more health regen, and during sunlight that becomes a 100% chance. With his health regen and strong defense, he can even tank some super effective physical moves, with Rotom-W hopefully available to switch in and absorb any super effective special attacks sent his way.

That's it, and turned much longer than I expected. Thoughts? Suggestions?

You know how you have a Rotom-W to ruin the day of opposing rain teams? If your Excadrill had Sand Force or Sand Rush, it could serve a similar purpose for opposing sand teams.

An online damage calculator tells me an adamant Sand Rush Excadrill with maxed attack IVs and EVs has a 93.8% chance to OHKO an opposing Tyranitar who has maxed HP and defense IVs but no EV investment—which is a reasonable assumption, considering a lot of Tyranitars are geared for attack—with Earthquake. If you pack Sand Force, you're probably looking at a guaranteed OHKO.

Hippowdon is iffier, since they tend to be built quite bulkily, so you're probably looking at a 2HKO at best, probably 3HKO. Still, though, if your opponent's running sand, then you bring in Excadrill and start punching holes in his pokemon.

Excadrill is available in ground-type friend safaris. Drilbur is not, though you can of course just breed Excadrill to get one.[DOUBLEPOST=1387179555,1387179425][/DOUBLEPOST]I've found Bulbapedia to be very inaccurate so far this gen, while Serebii tends to be updated far faster.

The Battle Maison is a bitch. I cleared the first singles challenge pretty easily, but I've got max speed EV Mons getting outspend by almost everything. My Azumarill is going to be an absolute monster once I build up to that Ability Capsule, and I need to put Grass Knot on my Greninja.

Well, it's a safari zone catch, so it had the chance to be halfway decent. Smeargle doesn't really need a ton of perfect IV's to be good, but terrible speed will definitely hurt it.

(of course, I already have 3 perfect Smeargles, so maybe I shouldn't be greedy...)

Well, if they're going to wait, they might as well give it a shot. The trouble is that if you hack one on a GBA game and upload it to 4th gen, 5th gen, 6th gen, I doubt they're going to have stuff in place to detect a hack through all those transfers since the uploads are essentially just replicating the various stats of the Pokemon. So long as the hacks stay within possible stats, Nintendo can't catch them all.

I'm glad they sold so much hardware--it'll mean bigger chance of better games in 2014 for Wii U. 2013 was an awesome 3DS year and I'd like to see the home console get some more love. Right now it's pretty much my Wind Waker machine/SNES.

You can't hack the new species. Build up that stable, and you'll have good trade value.

Groudon and Kyogre are getting Mega evolutions, if the box art is any indication. Legenaries with Mega evolutions sounds broken as fuck.

Regardless, I just picked up X and transferred everything I've had since Gen 3 to X or the Pokebank. This means I don't need to get Ruby and can get Sapphire this time around.

Thoughts on X? Leveling seems much more even now. I'm about to get my 8th badge and my entire team is 65-75. I don't know if this is because XP Share is so much better this time around or if it's just because they leveled things more appropriately. Hell, most of my Hall of Famers from Ruby didn't break 60 and I still need to do Victory Road and the Elite 4.

It's both. The new Exp Share makes it so the whole team gets it evenly spread, and the amount of experience gained from wild battles and trainers is balanced so that you don't have to grind, so long as you don't run away from the fights you do get into. It also helps that captures give experience now.

I really should try a Nuzlocke of Pokemon Y. I gave up on it because I thought it would be too easy, but I could be wrong. That, or just wait for the new games.

As someone that spends a of time leveling new pokemon, I really like the battle restaurants, since you can just do those to get pokemon up to level 50+ instead of fighting the elite 4 over and over

I built it to be an anti-fairy stall breaker, but he's been doing solid work against everything, even though he doesn't even have an item at the moment. I've really only been losing to teams overloaded with Legendaries.

Metagross is sorta like Garchomp in that it's actually a fair bit stronger than you'd think, due to good typing and move selection. Now Garchomp took a hit thanks to the Fairy rush, but Metagross is still pretty boss because Psychic and Steel are still great types.

I'm still working my way through the post-story bits and walking to the last Gym and Victory road. Current team:

- Clawitzer (Zoidberg): Surprisingly decent thanks to Mega Launcher (Pulse moves dmg +) and a high Special Attack. Dark Pulse and Water Pulse are staying, but I'll have to get rid of Cut and Surf eventually.
- Garchomp: Amazing stats all around, good moves, and good typing. Even does well against Fairies!
- Magnezone: This is my anti-Earthquake machine. Lock-On + Zap Cannon means anything that is weak to electricity is dead in two turns. Everything else is Paralyzed 100% of the time. Immune to Elec? Flash Cannon works just fine.
- Serperior (Smugleaf): Staller. Leech seed, Toxic, Coil, and Leaf Blade. I dump toxic and leech seed on, then proceed to coil until I'm taking only minor damage. After that it's time to cut some grass.
- Gengar (Gaspar): My Mega evolution. Thanks to his high speed, the idea is to dump toxic on a guy and use Venoshock to finish them off, use Destiny Bond for a free kill, or Shadow Ball them to death. Works well.
- Unfezant: My Flyer. I use Swagger to confuse and then fly to avoid hits.

On the Bench:
- Darmanitan: His time is coming. Thanks to his special ability, I can use his Flare Blitz for MASSIVE DAMAGE as I trade the burn effect for extra attack power. Usually 1HKOs anything he hits. Will probably replace Unfezant for the Elite 4 battles.

I'm just gonna treat this as a general Pokemon thread. New games drop in a week, and while there are the expected legendaries from the original Ruby and Sapphire, there's a shit-ton of others as well:



Pretty much if you've missed anything from Diamond/Pearl forward, aside from the box art ones (Palkia/Dialga, Ho-Oh/Lugia, Reshiram/Zekrom) you'll be able to catch it for your Pokedex in this game. And of course, X/Y have the gen 1 legendary birds and Mewtwo.

I was going to just buy the cartridge for this game so I could sell it in a year when the next Pokemon game comes out, but this looks like it's going to be the definitive game for gen 6 and I'd rather download it so I don't have to wonder where it is if I have Persona Q or Mega Man Zero Collection in my cartridge slot.

Also, for those who haven't played the demo, moving around is a lot more fluid in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Whereas X/Y movement was either slippy on the skates or jerky on foot, OR/AS has full all-directional movement when walking around ... you know, like a real modern video game. It's refreshing and is going to make it difficult to go back to X/Y's weird semi-tank state.

On the legendary front--in addition to all those legendaries listed earlier, the box cover ones are also in this game; they're just version exclusives. Ruby gets Ho-Oh, Palkia, Reshiram, and of course Groudon, while Sapphire gets Lugia, Dialga, Zekrom, and Kyogre.

Everything in-game legendary is here except the gen 1 and gen 6 legendaries.

So, I think I'm going to wait to take on the Elite 4. There's a not-so-rare game freeze glitch that can occur right after you complete the game, and in some cases, it's bad enough to wreck the save. It's basically the new Luminose City glitch, but far more difficult to avoid. The patch comes out early December, so it's not a long wait, at least.

All I keep getting are Ralts. No one Wonder Trades anything of value except on Christmas Day, where you can usually count on some people putting out starters or other favorite, low level pokemon.

I've gotten some interesting Wonder Trades so far. Got a Bagon, which I'm pondering breeding and then adding to my in-game team. Also got a Fletchling, though unfortunately it doesn't have its hidden ability. Oh, and a Bidoof with its hidden ability Moody, which might be fun to abuse.

I am reminded that I wish there was a game where you could do contests or gym battles, and then the game splits objectives depending on your final goal. The other path could be a fun side quest for you if you want to try to do both in one game, but I always loved the idea of pokemon contests. :p

It's 5 dollars for an entire year. I'd say it's worth it just to transfer stuff from one game to the next, especially if you have nostalgic ones you want to keep or IV trained ones for competitive play.

Next I go into my X game, search for my trade, and offer up my Larvesta. The Zigzagoon goes into my copy of X.

Finally, I go back into my OR copy, and retrieve Larvesta from the GTS.

Apart from me, no one in their right mind is going to take that trade. And if they do... well, yay, extra Larvesta. The key is to put the crappy poke up first, and request the good poke in exchange.

I bred a few modest Larvestas and threw them up on Wonder Trade. Volcaronas for everyone!

Not really necessary though. If someone does snag the trade before me, all I've lost is a Zigzagoon. It did actually happen once or twice, I put up a crap pokemon and requested a Ditto, because I wanted to transfer my Dittos from X, and when I went into my X game I couldn't find the trade. Someone had traded me a Ditto in the 10 seconds it took me to switch games.

Honestly, I just don't like Hoenn. Sure, it looks better in the new 3D engine, and Soar is kinda neat, but it just feels so bland compared to Kalos. As goofy as Team Flare was, they were a bit more inspired than Team Aqua/Magma.

Plus, the decision to lock out non-Hoenn Pokemon until the post game just kinda sucked, too. I've gotta clear out the Elite Four in Ruby, and I'm really just after a couple Mega Stones and the move tutors. If they just threw X/Y an update for the new Megas, I'd have been set. My copy of Ruby would have been nothing more than a move tutor venue. I'd greatly prefer to remain in Kalos. I've got about twenty fully trained Pokemon to build competitive teams with, so I'm pretty much set.

The next remakes should be Sinnoh, though. I did enjoy that region.

Hoenn certainly demands more out of the player than any other region in the series. Lots of backtracking, not much direction in what to do or where to go next, a great deal of HM juggling. Also, there are non-Hoenn Pokemon among the others, but I thought there used to be more.

I'm not forcing myself to get to the Elite Four though. Makes more sense to play something else until you're in the mood for Hoenn's stuff.

There was a gameplay reason back in RBY for being unable to forget HM moves normally though. Moves such as Surf, Fly, Cut etc are necessary for navigating the game world. This meant that if you could forget HM moves easily, it would be possible (though admittedly very unlikely) that you could get yourself trapped in the game and be unable to continue.

For example, Fly/Surf to Cinnabar Island. Release every Pokemon that knows Fly and Surf, or have them forget them. Release every Pokemon that could ever learn these moves. Enjoy your now-permanent retirement on Cinnabar Island.

Of course, making HM moves unforgettable is a rather clunky way to get around this issue. I'm sure there are better ways, such as allowing HM moves to be forgotten normally, as long as you can access another Pokemon that has those moves (such as in your PC).

Alternatively, upgrade HM moves so that they're all viable in battle. Surf and Waterfall are considered good moves for competitive battling. Buff Cut and Rock Smash to do more damage. Make Fly and Dive one-turn moves. Up the damage of Strength to make it a viable alternative to Return.

The best time to start wonder trading are when my breeding reject boxes get full.

4 perfect IVs? NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Man, and here I am running around with pokes with max IVs in only attack and speed, and being perfectly content with them.

Also, I still don't know what to do with the 6IV shiny Eevee I got off wonder trade. This must be what it feels like to find a briefcase full of cash under a bridge.

That was my only complaint about the influx from poketransfer. Suddenly everyone's running around with all perfect iv shiny teams. It's like come on, you're not even trying to hide it.

It increases the chance of encounter shiny pokemon, as well as increasing the chance of breeding shiny pokemon.

I finished the main game of Omega Ruby a few weeks ago, haven't gotten around to playing that new mini-story yet. Also the champ's Mega-Evolved Metacross did not fuck around. Steel/Psychic is brutal. Thankfully my brother had a Gabite on his X game that he didn't need, because he turned into quite a beast.

Yep. After getting the Shiny Charm, I snagged a shiny on, like, merely the 10th Pokemon of a Dexnav chain. Traded it for a Cresselia.

There's been a bunch of freebies the last couple months, though. The Unova starter final forms with hidden abilities are available until November via codes.

Apparently Arceus was released at an event in Japan recently, so there's been a flood of Arceus on the GTS. A suspiciously large number of them are shiny.

Anyway, traded a Celebi for an Arceus. Now I just need to find some way to get another Celebi to replace the one I lost.
