The Internet will never satisfy its lust for bizarre and weird things.

"Bean dad" is trending on Twitter, and holy shit:
Twitter’s Bean Dad Is a Metaphor for our Broken Country

I have no idea if this is parody, but if it is the author is really committed to the bit.

TLDR; asshole Tweets lavishly about how he forced his hungry 9 year-old daughter to spend six hours trying to figure out how to use a can opener because he declared that no one would eat until she figured out how to use an old, malfunctioning can opener on her own, to teach her a lesson about self reliance.

The whole thing does seem a little fishy to me, because I didn't know they made cans of baked beans that don't come with a pull tab these days.
Bean Dad is anti-Semitic

Today I stumbled upon a subreddit that has fathers posting lewd/nude pics of their daughters. I mean sure, for all I know it's not really fathers posting salacious images of their daughters, it's probably just a bunch of people posting porn pics and assigning made-up titles and stories to them. But nonetheless that's the theme of the subreddit and it makes me very uncomfortable. And that's saying something.

I'm not sure if it's something reportable, as far as I can tell everyone was of legal age. So it's skeevy but I don't think it's necessarily illegal.

Porn had been moving more and more towards all variations on barely-not-incest - daughter swap, family swap, step-eveything, etc.
I'm not surprised people do it irl as well.

I'd heard that the comic Heathcliff has gone off the rails, but...

Bees are friends, but what does that have to do with anything?

Has anyone checked on Mr. Gallagher?

I'd say between this and 9 Chickweed Lane, it's proof no one is reading the comics anymore, except for like, 15 Boomers, 8 of which provide any and all commentary on the internet.

Not counting the Comic Curmudgeon.

I genuinely did not notice him until about 20 seconds later, despite the first panel literally saying there's a guy next to Waldo.

I give it MAYBE 5-10 yrs before the entertainment industry tries to leverage this somehow as a form of copy protection, or at least auditing and tracing.

Wow, you ain't wrong about 9 Chickweed Lane...

I remember that comic being a little off back when I still read comics in the paper, with how horny it could be about teenage Edda, but holy crap it's just horny all the time now.

Truth be told, I never saw 9CL in print. None of the papers we got in NY/NJ/Philly carried it. I only learned of it via the internet many, many years ago, and was not impressed. The artwork has always been horrid.

But thanks (no thanks, actually) to DW's Twitter I still get updated on it. It's managed to get worse, but it always reminds me of hardcore porn; not because it's sexy or titillating, but because it's emotionless, unpassionate and going through the motions. And then he added the homunculi that are supposed to be children they largely ignore. Does Brooke McEldowney know what human relationships/interactions are really like?

Honestly though, once you start looking at them in any serious way rather than a 5 second chuckle 5 times a week, this holds true for most "newspaper" comics.
Calvin and Hobbes is pretty much the exception that proves the rule.
It's also why PvP could technically still be a syndicated paper comic... Except that Scott can't manage a deadline.
Anyway, most newspaper comics, especially the older and "beloved" ones, really aren't anywhere near good quality, with line work that would not meet criteria to be picked up anywhere on the web, characters who will never, ever, ever evolve, progress or go through any sort of arc. No story lines of any complexity, no changes to the status quo, no deep thoughts, no actual fun, etc. At most some basic ad libbing on standard cliches.

I agree with a lot of this, especially when it seems like by the early 2000's, papers were less likely to take on something new. Although, I remember reading that when comic strips w began to be printed much smaller than they originally were, detailed artwork became a smudgy detriment a lot of the time. Not that it should excuse some of the shoddy work some cartoonists have gotten away with. As for the "5 second chuckle", 95% of them can't even illicit that.

There are definitely a few exception. I think Bloom County in it's heyday managed to craft good story and detailed artwork. And before she went off the rails with her thinly-veiled family wish-fulfillment, Lynn Johnston managed to age her cast in realtime for, what, 30+ years in For Better or For Worse.

Eh?

--Patrick
This became steadily more apparent in the strip's final years, as — concurrent with Johnston's discovery that her husband was cheating on her and the subsequent messy divorce — the strip wound down and the characters all began settling into domestic bliss rather than continue being exciting young adults, resulting in two of the three Patterson kids marrying their childhood sweethearts due to massively contrived circumstances. Much speculation ensued from disappointed fans over this development, in particular whether or not Johnston may have been attempting to deal with her personal trials by creating the life she wanted for herself through the strip.

Huh, I've never heard of Bucee. I figured the second big brand Tgexans were willing to die for would be Blue Bell Ice Cream
Nobody would dare declare war on Blue Bell. Texans preferred listeria to Blue Bell shutting down.

It doesn't surprise me that you haven't heard of Bucee's, but here, it's a rapidly growing cult. Yes, based on a gas station.

Bucee's is a gas station. It has the cleanest restrooms in all of the US and the stall doors ARE ACTUAL DOORS! (at least all the ones I've been in do). and their corporate headquarters is like a 5 minute drive from my house

I live on one side of the Sheetz/Wawa divide, so I can see it.
Around here, at least, the devotion to Sheets/Wawa is nothing like Bucees. Bucees is practically religion.
Walking into Buc-ee's was like wandering into a mix of a Walmart, a barbecue-centric deli, and the Texas tourism bureau, plus a dash of the Cracker Barrel general store.
