Coronavirus Thread

I'm the opposite of a statue defender, like as in I don't think anyone should have one, but if there's a Canadian (that isn't indigenous) that deserves one it's Terry Fox.

I didn’t even know anything had happened to it? Because I just automatically assumed that everyone would know Terry Fox's statue deserves to be a statue dedicated to Terry Fox and not Fox News?

So you know how somebody will get COVID and die and then the cause of death will be listed as "heart failure" or "cancer" or "stroke" and everyone is up in arms about how all these comorbidities will skew the "official" COVID numbers and obscure how widespread the illness really is? Well, one of my father-in-law's buddies recently died due to injuries he received in November when he was beaten with a wrench after someone else felt like he had cut in front of him at the gas pump, breaking his jaw and nose, and probably more. The buddy was 86 years old and a veteran who was very active in the community, and he died in early January after his condition worsened and he caught COVID. The police DO know who the person was, but he fled to Indiana and hasn't been back to Michigan since, and they have not put out any kind of warrant.

The thing that irks me the most about this is that his death probably WILL be recorded as COVID-related, because this means his death will probably not be ruled as murder/manslaughter just so nobody will have to spend the time and trouble necessary to get a warrant issued for this idiot, or deal with the process of trying to pry him out of Indiana.

Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash....I like all these artists, and all, but they do have something in common about their popularity I'm afraid.

Failure dropped as well. The thing is, most modern bands have been contemplating dropping Spotify because they pay for shit. I know the biggest names haven't jumped on yet, but considering what they pay, they maybe should join in. They wouldn't be losing money they would notice.

Funny enough, but they actually hold a lot more clout in the music industry right now then we assume. I thought we talked about this study in some thread, but I'll mention it here, too:

Old Music Now Makes Up Nearly 70% of American Consumption

Old music is still generating more money than new music in the industry right now. There's been a huge decline in the $$$ of new music in the past decade. It feels weird to say that, counter-intuitive as it is for the "MTV" generation to hear. The music industry has been falling over themselves to jump on "the next big thing for the kids!" for what, 70 years? But if the numbers are accurate and enough of these, well, "boomer musicians" pull out of Spotify, serious damage can be done.

In case Americans are wondering, they're being allowed to build a fucking wooden shanty town across from City Hall with stockpiles of diesel and shit now. The Sons of Anarchy, sorry, I meant Soldiers of Odin dude is apparently in charge now.

It makes sense, when I start up the radio even on the general stations, a good 50% or more of the music is from the 90s or earlier. Every now and then you get a few from the 00s and then once in a blue moon something like Blinding Lights from The Weeknd might come on. It was something I was thinking about after maybe the tenth time I heard Everlong in a week and I remember listening to that song in high school.

My best guess is that we grew up with TV and music being the only real content we could consume, so we got really into our tapes (and then CDs). Kids for awhile now have been more into watching silly shit on youtube, and so they are getting less and less interested in music as a whole from their own generation, instead only listen to the music their parents are blaring in their garage.

You laugh, but there's some thought that the idea of owning a physical CD/LP/cassette that can be played and replayed does a lot towards establishing the permanence of a song in a person's mind, while music that has to be streamed is more ephemeral and so does not bury itself as deeply in someone's memory.
I wonder if one day kids might learn about pop music in school the way we learned about sonnets.
The oboe may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock 'n' roll is still beatin' (for now).

eh, I remember being taught about Billie Holiday and the Beatles in 6th grade choir. And they even dealt with drug use in With a Little Help from My Friends.

Found out my father and step mother got Covid a week ago. Said it was a rollercoaster and is still making them too tired to do anything.

I am scared shitless because my father survived cancer just a year ago, and my step mom is a super conservative that believes Jesus will return any week now, which makes me think they likely didn't vaccinate.

I am too much of a chicken shit to ask them if they vaccinated though because my relationship with them has always been complicated and I worry one vaccination argument would sever any connection I have with them. Just have to hope this isn't going to kill them.

@Bubble181 - I wouldn't want to try to get the puck against Hayley Wickenheiser in the corners.
...I....I would hope I was clear enough that I was being sarcastic/voicing the "opinion" of the "specialists" who have problems keeping a mask over their face for 5 minutes.
I don't think people are categorized as "women" and "normal people", either*.

*there's attack helicopters too!

The Prime Minister of Canada in consultation with the Premiers has invoked the emergency measures act. The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Sorry, the RCMP is now in control of Ottawa. And if you think 'Merikuh Civil Asset Forfeiture is fun, wait until you try maple syrup flavoured! The Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland (who should be PM) laid it out, if your company truck is at the protest, your entire company assets belong to us now.

Through these new powers the government is:

  • Enabling the RCMP to have the jurisdiction to enforce municipal bylaws and provincial offenses;
  • Permitting police to impose fines or imprisonment on those taking part in a public assembly where it’s considered illegal;
  • Designating secure and protected places and infrastructure that are critical to the economy such as border crossings and airports;
  • Compelling those capable to render essential services, so in this case ordering tow truck drivers to move vehicles blocking roads; and
  • Financial institutions will be authorized or directed to regulate and prohibit the use of property to fund or support these protests.
