What are you playing?

C'mon. Lightning was pretty damned angsty. She got better (which was good) and hell, even Hope got better as the story went on. WAY too late IMO, but still, he did.

I'd even say that Cecil in 4 was pretty angsty, but at least that was only a plot point for the first 1/4 (or less) of the story, and was resolved.

In 5, Faris (I think that's the name, the pirate queen and sister of the princess, which yes, she's technically a princess too, but you know what I mean) also had a touch of this, though not a lot.

Pick a character that did NOT have some angst in 6. Not many. Most had at least a bit, but they at least didn't let it rule their lives (mostly).

So if somebody wanted to say it's usually there, I'd say ya, but at least a fair amount of the time they deal with it, or at least it's not a major plot mover.

C'mon, Squall spent half his screen time flashing back to crying in the rain about his sister. Over. And. Over. That doesn't compare with Cecil thinking that maybe he's been doing the wrong thing slaughtering all those innocent people.

Never said angsty, we said -emo- there is a difference.

Re-read my post, I didn't list FF4.

Having an inner story that haunts you but does not define your character does not qualify as -emo-

Again, -emo- not -angst- is what we're nitpicking here.

The Laguna parts are what kept me trudging through the tedious "Captain Emo and the Cosby kids" squall parts! Bleh! Laguna's bunch were grand. I did try replaying it a few years ago, it doesn't play so nice in XP later on. Crashes once you get to the hidden city part, unfortunately.
If I remember correctly,Laguna and his gang were supposed to have their own game, which I think would have been much more interesting.

Yeah, they were. But the suits didn't think people would buy a second game to get the complete story, so it was merged with FF8 in late development. Those executives were proven fools many times over at this point.

A laguna-centric game could have been the best FF ever. Well, ok, except 3/6. But that should go without saying. They just don't make that kind of game any more.

It's not FF, but I would love a game in which Frog and Magus from chrono trigger team up in an odd couple buddy cop adventure.

Oh, no! Not the disagree notifications! You know it, and I know it: there is almost no correlation between the in-game art and the in-manual art. It was like, who took the big, semielliptical eyes from the game and turned them into these HYPER AnGRY TRIANGLE BROW PEOPLE who are EXTREME so you think they're COOL!

You know that Akira Toriyama wasn't just the guy who did the art for the box/booklet, right? He was the chief character designer, like he's been for every Dragon Quest game ever. Every facet of the character's appearance comes from his influence. He did his drawings first, then they had to downscale them to meet the limitations of the system.

I'd also like to point out he didn't do the art for Chrono Cross and the game was MUCH worse for it.

I'm pretty sure the art workflow went the other way there, GB.
Doubtless. But for most folks, presentation/revelation went the way I narrated it.

Plus I could just be biased in that I think all Akira Toriyama can't draw anything but leadbrowed cupie dolls with twinkletoes. Akira Toriyama is the Rob Liefeld of Anime.

Almost forgot for a second you're going for entertainment trolling and not actual opinionated ideas :) Changed my button press :)

Considering at least half of the comics I've read recently are CGI or Poser images someone traced over, I'd much prefer Toriyama's art anyday.

Seriously, there's comic artists out there that aren't even drawing anymore. They're using Goddamn Poser to make sequential art.

I find Squall to be one of the better captain emo's of the FF series. Is he an angsty douche? Yes, but the rest of the cast mocks him for it, which makes it more tolerable.
I was responding to this, in which the word angst actually does appear! So stop trashing the rest of my post claiming I'm not reading for your own not reading.

And I know you didn't list 4. I'm agreeing with Squidlybits that virtually all the games have somebody who IS angsty, even in ones you did not list. Perhaps not to the extreme degree of being a prime plot mover as in 7, or as annoying as in 8, but it is there in most/all of them to one degree or another.

The main argument was that the mood of the character was so terrible it was nearly detrimental to the game as a whole. Hence your example of angsty characters still does not fit the point of the topic. However you are right, Angsty was used. It simply wasn't the main point.

Tidus and his attitude is a huge detriment to the game at first. It takes almost the entire first half of the game for him to stop being a huge baby and become interesting. Wakka was more compelling. Don't get me wrong, I like X, but Tidus nearly turned me off the game. X-2 should have been a standalone of it's own, not a horrible, badly written piece of girl power schlock to shit all over the end of X. The gameplay was pretty good and I'm a sucker for job systems, but to turn Yuna into...whatever that was, ugh. Paine was some kind of bizarre tough-girl stereotype and Rikku was just, well, she was the same as she was in X.

The attitude of Lightning and Hope in XIII was similar to Tidus in that they're just so unlikable for so long. If it weren't for Odin showing up, Lightning was ready to leave Hope to die on a foreign planet. That's a pretty shitty attitude.

Is a game called "Lightning Returns: FFXIII" really appealing to anyone?
Square is obsessed with Lightning. I don't get it. Lightning Returns is nearly ready for release, and there's at least three other games their fans have been dying for (XIII Vs., Kingdom Hearts III, World Ends With You II). I worry that Square's gonna get all Capcom on us.

What is going on is Square Enix basically lost a shitload of money on FFXIII because of it's long development time and poor fan reception... so they are doubling down on the franchise to try and make some money in Japan. This isn't working, but their sales have gone up thanks to Deux Ex, Sleeping Dogs, and other western titles they now own.

Thing is, I LIKED FF13. It wasn't the best, not my favorite of the series by a long shot (or #2, or #3) but it was good. Way too linear? Yep! Other story issues? Yep! But overall, liked it.

I liked 13-2 even more. They polished up the battle system to remove most of the most annoying aspects of it, and added in a few new good things too. And it was genuinely a GOOD story IMO. Too bad it ended on a cliffhanger, but hey, it was good until then IMO. So I'm glad they're actually going to finish said story and not leave us hanging.

If you didn't like one or both of those, great, that's up to you, but don't rag on those of us that want to see an end to the story either.

Edit: and btw, just to (attempt) to get this thread back on track, I am just about literally chomping at the bit waiting for the Rift expansion to be released tomorrow. Very excited about it.

Too lazy to shoop it, but imagine I just posted a picture of Adam Jensen holding a copy of Lightning Returns growling "I didn't ask for this."

I liked the later half of XIII, once I had full control of the characters and their advancement. The ending was even pretty good, and the final boss was challenging (his first form was not, as all I had to do was chain-cast Poison to cheese out of him changing phases). I couldn't get into XIII-2, though, the new level system felt a bit too flat and I'm usually not a fan of playing Pokemon to round out my party. I'm curious to see how XIV changes with the whole rebuild going on, and I'm still slightly hopeful FF itself gets back on track.

Outside of my griping, I've been bouncing around between Guild Wars 2 and Rift, with a little Kirby: Return to Dreamland on the side. I think I've finally given up on WoW.

Right now i am playing Call of duty blacks ops game. I love this game and in my free time i always play this game.

Rift expansion out. All other concerns secondary.

Lots of fun actually. The usual MMO problems of the "huge mass" of players in the same places at the same time, but generally it's working out fine.

Installing Baldur's Gate 2, was browsing a /v/ thread on it and got nostalgia'd pretty hard. We'll see how far I can get, I remember this game being pretty unforgiving.
