Yea. I pre-order the collector's edition. There goes next month's "fun money"

#2

Collectors edition sold out already. Grabbed the Delux Version.

#3

Gusto

Gusto

Got my Digital Deluxe version.

#4

Dave

Dave

Real question: How can you sell out digital content?

#5

Gusto

Gusto

The first wave of preorders are limited because they come with early access to the game.

#6

Dave

Dave

So it has nothing to do with the game itself, but the server capacity for stable servers. Got it.

#7

Gusto

Gusto

Probably just a bonus for early birds. I imagine they'll open another wave of preorders after this wave is done, but it'll just be a standard get-it-when-the-actually-releases-whenever-that-is affair.

#8

Chibibar

I order the collector's edition from Gamestop online, but more than likely I'll order another one at the store itself (safer I think) plus I know the manager there.

Hmmmmm. You know I may have to check this one out. MAYBE. I read this on the wiki and cringed:

Players' choices will permanently open or close storylines and affect players' NPC companions
I have yet to see an MMO developer that can manage the kind of balance that will require and not eventually capitulate to the whining masses. It's like they have never heard of min/max
And good lord the space combat is going to be a tunnel shooter.....

Still though, I'll withold judgement. I'm just concerned that Bioware's poor conception of Sandbox vs Decision tree will make the game progression very boring.

#12

Droool.... How can I juggle EVE,LOL and this? xD

I am still excited, but yea. I can see if people makes BAD decision and lock out of that companion.

Maybe there will change it to make it "semi-permenant" i.e. allow doing MANY quests to regain their favor (probably would be better with faction/personal recognition style) but of course if you gain one, you lose another and CAN'T have them all.

#14

Chad Sexington

Chad Sexington

I think you each get to make the decision, but the majority will win out, however, if you chose to say, spare a life and the team votes such that guy was still killed, you earn the light side points (not sure about faction/rep), even though that character is now dead for you.

#15

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Good, I don't care if some hoity toighty jedi namby pamby would be a better min/max companion. If my mass murdering bounty hunter had to carry that along with her? I'd just shoot myself.

#16

Frank

Frankie Williamson

EA sure has that internet thing figured out.

Check out this madness:

The neogaffer that spoke with their tech support confirmed that that indeed is a surcharge for the joy of pre-ordering through ORIGINS.

Those prices are inFUCKINGsane.

#17

LordRendar

LordRendar

That is expensive.

#18

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

$150 for the Collector's Edition.... ouch.

#19

Frank

Frankie Williamson

You don't get a whole hell of a lot with that collector's edition either. Some shitty plastic statue and a soundtrack disc? A bunch of useless ingame items. That is terrible.

At least when 2K charged near that for the Bioshock special edition we got that amazing Big Daddy resin statue.

#20

Chad Sexington

Chad Sexington

I'm so torn! I really want to try this but between school and work, I'll have so little time that investing the monthly fee for only a few hours of play... I'd probably only play it during Christmas/Spring/Summer breaks, and I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it at that slow a pace.

#21

No release date yet. Why?

Because of WoW.

Bioware has some smart mother fuckers. I wish I had a good enough computer to make pre-ordering worth it.

But they have to give it out sooner or later. They can't "not tell" forever. I mean customers will want to know.

But they have to give it out sooner or later. They can't "not tell" forever. I mean customers will want to know.
Yes but they can wait until the development cycle for significant new competing content is too short.

Edit: It would be amusing if Blizzard just produced huge new content releases and then just sat on them until a competitor, confident in their timetable, announced their new MMO and then... BAM! Massive content release for WoW.

#24

Chibibar

Heh. It is a good possibility. WoW team is constantly producing stuff and maybe might have a couple of items (on the shelf) to combat competition.

#25

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Not sure I believe that; Blizzard seems to take a long time producing anything, and only in the past couple years have they even been able to get releases out on their announced date.

Not to mention, Guild Wars 2 will not be too far behind The Old Republic. Blizzard can steal the newcomers from one with a new release, but I doubt they'll have another waiting in the wings so soon.

#26

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Problem is? October is Blizzcon. Since there was no expansion info last year, there WILL be some this year.

They'd be smart to release based on the info released then. Release before the WoW xpac and they're off to a good start.

#27

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Expansion info for an expansion in 2012, while they seem to intend on a holiday 2011 release--I think announcing the date after BlizzCon might be wiser, let that be the newer news story, but I'm no marketing guru, so I may have no idea.

You're leaving that at 666 hours, aren't you?

#28

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

We won't see the new WoW xpac till 2012 for sure, that's usually how they do it. Announce in October, release around Feb/March.

If Star Wars can do something big before then, they'll be alright. If not, they better hope they wait a few months after March till "New Xpac syndrome" wears off.

(I'm already way past the 666 mark now, probably around 680. Glad I managed to notice that timer with enough opportunity to screen cap it)

#29

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

You think Feb/March 2012 for WoW's next expansion? That seems really tight to me, looking at their timeline. BC was January 2007, then Lich King in November 2008, a year and ten months, and then Cata in December 2010, two years and a month. I can't see Blizzard getting another expansion out after only another 14-15 months. Unless you mean a patch a la Black Temple or whatnot. That I could totally see.

#30

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Well yeah, I meant content update. Ala, Deathwing.

From what I read, I've managed to get in the first wave of Closed Betas.... which apparently from several sources are less than 10k.

It is probably really stupid of me, but I pre-ordered the CE. I will probably sell the statue, but I want a lot of the other goodies and I have a good amount of disposable income.

The gameplay videos look awesome and the content looks compelling. I want to roll a Jedi Sage or an Imperial Agent.

I'll agree with Shego's sentiment though; Jay's pretty cool.

#70

You know what is cool? Playing a game for 4 hours straight and experiencing no lag, no disconnects, no bullshit but great gaming and solid grouping the first night the beta comes out.

This has NEVER happened before.

#71

Jay

Fantastic game session. There are bugs, albeit minor ones and the product isn't refined but the most important thing was server stability and it was there. Lots of interesting quests, grouping WHILE doing quests take on a brand new level of social interactions.

Being evil feels good in this game.

Sounds like the gameplay is compelling. How are the mechanics? Or is that NDA breaking?

#75

Jay

Jay

Grouping is a LOT of fun. Imagine a cross between Star Wars and Mass Effect 2 when ALL members of the party participate in discussions? When someone gets the highest roll, their choice appears on the screen. Hilarious moments.

That is good to hear. It might be a good contender against the current MMO "champ" ;) I hope they decide to release soon since rumors about a new expansion is "leaked" (I forgot where I read it but it was done similar to Lich King and Cataclysm leak.)

It looks like EA is limiting availability of this game at launch to ensure people can actually get in to play.

EA confirms launch copies of SWTOR will be limited.

This is both smart and really, really stupid. On one hand, it means the game will actually be playable at launch. On the other hand, it also means that guilds, friends, and families are going to fragmented, really hurting cohesion. No one wants to be left out and no one wants to be without their friends. Why would you buy a game if you didn't know if your friends would be able to get in?

The fanatci of the game will still camp the second wave of purchase though and giving advance warning allows them and their friends/family to plan contingencies. A casually follower who doesnt follow news, etc would probably think the game is selling really well when they find its sold out and will just wait till they can buy it like they would do any other game(That they can't pirate...that was for Gas ;p.)

Not ideal but better than Mythic's make a bunch of servers to prevents server crashes(aka classic wow launch) but end up having to merge 80% of them after the hype wears down and drive off people like me who played it casually but kept getting put off by having to find out where my guildies all moved to.

#112

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

I can't really fault them considering what happened with WAR. To grow the server capacity with the enforced size of player base will keep people from ditching WoW for it, getting frustrated with either queue times or empty servers, and just returning to WoW in the end. This will enforce demand, and when people get to play once the next wave of servers and sales comes through, they won't have anything to rage over when they encounter a stable server with a healthy, manageable population.

#113

Jay

Jay

Or they want a shitload of people to commit to pre-orders.

#114

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

They're limiting those too. The purchasing cap for both physical and digital is guaranteed to cap--your pre-order is apparently not a release day promise.

#115

Not really, but now would be the time to bring it up. You'd need consensus on whether your playing as the Republic or the Sith.

I've made a thread about a guild I'm starting IRL with some friends of mine, that you or someone else name Kovac_nz already joined.

#142

Jay

Jay

Not that I care for it much but there should be another guild because... well it's Republic and on a PVP server. Garbage.

As one who has played extensively in the closed beta the last thing I want is to repeatedly get ganked while questing. Quest worlds are pretty big and once you get to Nar Shaddaa you'll bump into a lot of people in the other faction. And I mean you'll be many many people in the same zone. So unless you're constantly grouped expect non-stop harassment and running back to whatever you were previously doing which can take upwards to 5 minutes and dying doesn't take much.

As far as PVP goes, battlegrounds are very satisfying and fun to play. They have a very nice "auto-balance" feature and I'm usually in a battleground within 30 seconds when I want to. I love Hutt ball. :)

Yeah, but are we talking ALIEN aliens like Ithorians and Mon Calamari, or are we talking mostly human shaped ones like Twi'leks, Iridians, and Zeltrons? Because all the trailers indicate that it's the latter and not the former.

See, that's kinda boring. I realize the old Star Wars game took years to get them, but I really enjoyed being able to look like a freaking alien.

I'll certainly be up for this. Hopefully I can get a new laptop before the launch date.

I pre-ordered this but recently cancelled it due to some major suckitude on EA's part. Did you know if you pre-order, and have to change your payment information for some reason, you actually have to call them to cancel your pre-order, then order it again? I was told by a number of customer service representatives that there was literally no way for them to change my information, even though my credit card was stolen and subsequently cancelled for security.

"Doesn't that mean I lose my spot in the early access?" "Well, um, I... yes..." "Uhhhh." "Sorry."

That was after I fought with their account services site for an entire night trying to cancel another account I had with them.

So if my bank was to send me a new credit card (Not because I asked for a new one but because they have implemented a new feature) with the same number but a different expiration date would I run into problems?

#160

PotaDOS

So if my bank was to send me a new credit card (Not because I asked for a new one but because they have implemented a new feature) with the same number but a different expiration date would I run into problems?
Probably. I'd call and ask. There's a feature on their site where they'll call you, but all three times I did it the quality of the call was terrible. I could barely understand most of their side of the conversation.

#161

Dei

Dei

I'm seriously wishing I had pre-ordered through Amazon instead of Origin because of this nonsense with not being able to change payment info. Thanks local movie theater for getting your shit hacked and thus my bank automatically issuing me a new card just to be safe.

EDIT: After browsing around the forums some, it seems people are having success at changing payment info over the phone (as a recent change). People are also saying that they will give you a chance to change your payment info if the charge fails on release day. So I guess I'll try calling and see what happens, and if it doesn't work, I'll just wait it out.

#164

I want to play this soooo badly.but with Orgin? I rather not.

#165

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

Actually, you don't NEED Origin to play. If you buy a digital deluxe version then yeah, you need it to download the game, but it updates through the game itself and doesn't launch via Origin. They've actually been pretty clear about this.

That being said, it's clearly only a matter of time before they combine ToR fullying Origin. They already make your Origin password match your ToR website one if you have the digital version.

#166

Ravenpoe

Ravenpoe

Dammit, we need to form an order to fight back against origin. Some kind of Jedi order..

#167

Jay

Jay

It's disheartening that TOR may or may not have ANYTHING to do with Origin or have EA play a bigger role than most publishers do. For the longest time this game was in my cart and all I needed to do was to press "Purchase". In the end, the Beta convinced me that this is NOT just another MMO. This is not, JapCrap. This is a great game, with great lore and the Dev team were working VERY HARD on fixing bugs. Their service convinced me to buy this game.

Then it took 2 hours to get the confirmation email that I bought the game... and for some reason the charges weren't the same.... I took a step back... bent over.... am currently waiting to get ass fucked by Origin any day now.

I played 2 characters to level 11 (Bounty Hunter and Jedi Knight) and before the wipe, I recreated them with a couple minor edits in the character builder so that I could take notes on their appearance slider numbers. I'm really enjoying the Bounty Hunter storyline, but yeah... it does kind of feel like it would have been a better single player game. Also, I'm kinda hating the "crafting mission" system. Sending my companion off for a few minutes should be punishment enough, I shouldn't have to PAY for the privilege, especially if there is a failure chance.

#227

Jay

Jay

It's far less of an issue once you have a few companions or you're in a group mission.

#228

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

It's far less of an issue once you have a few companions or you're in a group mission.
Again, the time isn't the issue. Losing my companion for awhile isn't the issue. The issue is that I have to PAY for it and it's the only way to get some resources... and I have no control over what I'll get at time. I don't want schematics when I sent somebody out for metal.

I've played to 17 now and I gotta say... it's a great game. My crafting issues aside, I really don't have any complaints aside from the lack of races. I mean seriously... no Wookies? No Mon Calamari? No Ithorians? No Zeltrans? It seems like their already holding back a lot of requested stuff just to make money in the expansions.

My only REAL gripe? The rail shooter for space missions. I fucken hated that decision most of all.

#234

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

I actually don't mind the rail shooter aspect. Yes, it's not as good as the mini-TIE Fighter inspired flight from Galaxies, but because it's a set path, they can make each mission feel more alive. It's much more exciting and cinematic.

They NEVER do a trial at launch. It'll likely be at least a year before they do it. If it helps, it plays like a better version of WoW.

I guess it's just something you learn from MMO experience: The beta IS the demo, so you'd better get in the beta if your not sure if you'll like the game.

If you bought a physical copy, the pre-order code was on the receipt they gave you, or something they gave you. If you bought it via Origin, then you need to boot up Origin and get the code from there. Then you can put it in on their website. If your receipt doesn't have a code, take it to where you pre-ordered and ask them to give you one.

However, I have NO IDEA if you'll get in now, as I don't know how they track they pre-order codes. It's entirely possibly that they'll consider you a recent pre-order and simply not get the early access. You can still claim your pre-order crystal though, which is actually pretty good and very cool to see in action. It's a yellow blast with a black core, which looks stunning.

People role play as their characters on the RP servers and they are more tightly moderated to enhance this experience. So yes... you may have your character's name reset if it's not sufficiently RP enough.

Virtue on City of Heroes had a ton of RPers, due to significant Dev interaction. You could literally go to Pocket D at just about any time of the day and you'd see at least three or four groups of people RPing, though it was usually more like a mob of 30-40 people... and that's not even counting the stuff that was going on in the Monkey Bar or in Super Group bases.

I can deal with it. Longest I've waited so far is about 12 minutes so it hasn't been too bad. The SWTOR forums were rife with people whining about it. It was actually pretty amusing.

Agreed. The angst is going to be astronomical. 1000's of people demanding their money back because they have to wait ~20 minutes to play a game! I've seen it several times already. So many people complaining about how they can't get in touch with customer support or they can't even run the game. Maybe you should have checked the system requirements before you bought it!

Just sat through a 90 min queue.

My thought exactly. If they are this bad with the early on pre-orders (which, lets be honest, if they can do math, there should be no servers more than "heavy or Very Heavy"), what are they going to be like on Tuesday?

#311

Telephius

Telephius

Have to see if they will die down after launch, Illidan only gets queues nowawdays on patch or exansion launces. They may go the have serves have que route to prevent ghost towns once the hype dies down, and if it maintains then make more servers, thats my theory at least.

#312

AshburnerX

They're planning for the future. They know that a lot of people buying this game aren't going to play past the 30 days, if only because of the subscription fee and the sheer time commitment it takes. To buy tons of servers just to accommodate the people who are going to leave in a month would be foolish.

#316

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

It's mainly because pretty much everyone involved with the game kinda wishes it didn't exist. It was a rushed product, with incomplete quests, story branches, dialog, and more. Which is sad because the story is still hands down one of the best from Bioware/Obsidian, rivaling that of Planescape: Torment... which makes sense, as both were written by the same person.

Our guild got sorted to the second heaviest population server in eastern North America. It's time to upgrade...

that sucks :( Daragon Trail so far has not been to bad and hope its decent pop stays decent without going overwhelming. Server selection is one of the suckiest things at an MMO launch. #346

ScytheRexx

ScytheRexx

While I really want to play this game, I decided I would rather just hold out. The server issues remind me of the issues Blizzard had on release, which is a good thing since it means huge interest, but will become a bad thing if they don't do the rapid server deployment that Blizzard did leading into the first few days of the WoW launch. I don't want to pay to sit in queues most of the time.

In the end, I want to see how it evens out. If in 6 months the game is still as popular as ever I will sign up, since I can afford at least one more subscription game. I notice a lot of MMOs these days usually release with a subscription and then within a few months revert to a F2P model, so I also want to see if that ends up happening here or not.

Either way, have fun and see you guys in the future!

#347

RoboKomodo

Well, IMHO, I would say it'll be around a long time, and it's not going to go F2P anytime soon. They stand to make a lot more money on subs than micro-payments.

They aren't adding any more servers, probably because they know after a month their playerbase is going to plummet (as all MMOs do). I'm sure after the first free month is done, it'll get better.

#350

That seems to be the general consensus. It's nuts now cause it's new. Things will die down in a few weeks.
People thought that about WoW, and it just kept growing and required even more and more servers even after the first rabid deployment that happened at launch. The servers WoW has now are over four times what they had originally. I think if the game is going to be as popular as people hope it would, then they need to assume the population will keep growing rather then shrink. The hype alone should have told them that.

It may very well be that many lose interest, and they wouldn't need the extra servers in the long run, but I would rather they invest into the servers and just merge them later then have the playerbase wait in gigantic queues. They can just sell the servers again to other companies/divisions or repurpose them for other games if they find they don't need them. This is actually one of the reasons I have already given up on DCU, because I found myself stuck in a queue most nights and decided to instead play other games.

Question! My comp seems ok for system requirements, but from what I've heard, its really intense on the system. If I can run Skyrim on high settings, I should be able to run this too, yes?

Oddly enough however, they don't have the same rule for their website, as their website informs me I can't buy the game because I'm not in an authorized region so...wtf mate?

It mostly seems to be crystals and relics, but the vendors also sell a few pieces of armor that restricted as well. I had great fun using my Dark side relic to give my character an evil red glow. When we RPed the Dark/Light decision during the Athsis Flashpoint, I used it as I urged the others to destroy the beacon and let the survivors die. Really surprised them, as they hadn't seen relics yet.

What problem are you having? If it was this morning, you may have to wait, as the servers were down for maintenance.

It took me like two minutes to activate and subscribe.

#370

PotaDOS

IIRC, the servers returned at 8am Central, which was when I began entering my information. Each time, I would wait through 10+ minutes of a queue, enter some information on pages that were loading slower than 33.6k modem speed, then at some point receive a 503 error or a page that failed to load correctly, causing me to start over (because hitting my refresh button would point me back to the starting point). By 8:40, I had my key entered and my credit card information stored, but it took me until 10:30ish to actually confirm the subscription. That's nearly two hours of trying to load a page with a single checkbox for the Terms of Service.

I was displeased, but it did finally take, so I guess that's over.

This exactly happened to me, but with added frustration. The first time I rode the balloon, I got there no problem and got the matrix shard, but overjumped the ledge wen I tried to drop down to the Strength datacron.

So I quested for a bit and got back on the balloon, rode it for 15 minutes or so, but glitched through it when I alt-tabbed to turn on iTunes.

The third time I was finally successful in getting the second cron, because there were 7 other people on the balloon with me, including a Smuggler (!). Fortunately, everyone on my server knows what a pain in the ass this trip is and there's a pretty well-enforced "ceasefire" at the balloon and platform. Anyway, I watched these other people walk backwards off the crawler onto the ledge, which worked perfectly for all of us.

As far as legacy stuff, I was able to get the Gusto name. :D The end of the Bounty Hunter first act was very satisfying and incredible, and left me with the greatest light side decision I've had so far. :)

I've done nothing in my free time except play this ever since the early access week. It has eaten my life.

I'm a serious altoholic though, so my highest level character is only 27. I can't speak for how 'hardcore' it gets in endgame, but I'd say it's very casual friendly. The storyline is superb, and it can very easily be played solo, during which it feels just like a bioware epic RPG. The ability to group up for heroic missions, flashpoints, operations, and go out in space battles helps a lot to break it up, and even though I tend to play MMO's solo while leveling, the flashpoints and group missions so far have all been a lot of fun.

The ability to have dialogue with npc's while in groups, and have everyone contribute (while earning social points to boot) make them feel much more involved than WoW.

Going by the official thread about it, it's apparently true, but what he's not telling anyone is that he was specifically using a pvp exploit known to be a problem on Ilum (factions trading off the pvp zones with end-game comparable loot in them for infinite wealth). So Bioware apparently banned him for using the exploit, not for going to a high-level zone with a low-level toon.

This may be the first game where I genuinely play every single class to cap. I'll likely pick one after that to keep in the end-game, but the stories are so much better than your average MMO, it's not even funny.

Yes, I've been a paladin many times, not in heart but g'damn if the mechanics don't sway me. (WoW: Would have played a Death Knight but been playing the PLD so long I couldn't bring myself to change mains in Wrath.)

There really isn't one, mainly because you'll always have companions that can fulfill another role for you. Basically, if you want to heal as a tank, get your companion to do it for you. If you want to tank, these are your options:

Jedi Shadow/Sith Assassin: Least tanky of the three choices, but can frontload it well. Also get some crowd control and backstabs. Starts as a Jedi Consular/Sith Inquistor.

Jedi Guardian/Sith Juggernaut: Probably the most tanky option, but needs to build up Force/Rage to do it. Don't have a lot of experience with them, but they are pretty tough. Starts as Jedi Knight/Sith Warrior.

Vanguard/Powertech: Probably the most balanced option, and the only ranged one. Mainly focuses on temporary shields and other abilities (like flamethrowers) to reduce damage coming in and increasing your own max health. Starts as Trooper/Bounty Hunter.

If you want to reliably heal yourself, your going to have to pick a more DPS focused class, unfortunately.

Every class gets NPC companions, to both do your crafting and quest with you. Think of it like playing KoTOR or Mass Effect. There are also romance options, but no gay options yet. You get NPC companions that take part in your character's story in the game. They can also craft/go on material gather missions for you. Finally, your able to take one of them with you while you quest to act as support (though you can tell them to go away if you want). It's basically to make up for not having other players with you. Each companion specializes in a different thing, be it healing, DPS, or tanking.

Honestly, I was a bit worried about them too when I first started, but they are invaluable if you play by yourself a lot.

The companion's name is Vette, and she is a thief captured and enslaved by the empire. She wears a shock collar, and you can indeed shock her. She's the first companion of the Sith Warrior.

I'll say this much about the companions...

- I've never had one who wasn't interesting in their own right. Each have their own likes and dislikes, meaning they all respond differently to dialog choices, and it's even possible to romance them (straight only right now but same-sex IS coming). They even have companion specific missions.
- I've never felt hindered by having one. Their AI never makes them do something stupid.
- I've never felt the need to tinker with their settings. Mako knows when to heal and when to shoot. On the whole, their AI is excellent.
- Even if it wasn't, you can alter how they'll use their powers, making them activate only, auto-use, or shut-off entirely.
- Most companions have several "looks" that you can use, on top of of their clothing options.

They've clearly put a lot of effort into this system and I feel like it's a great success.

#428

Adam

Companions make this game far more casual than any other MMO before it. Typically you'll have a companion that complements your skillset perfectly. As a Jedi Sage (healing), I was paired with a tanking Trandoshan. On my Trooper Vanguard, I had a Trooper healer (class name escapes me). Occasionally the companions can be a bit of a pain in the ass (My trandoshan companion uses his AOE taunt and breaks my CCs. I've turned it off, but if he dies, it always turns itself back on, known glitch to be fixed) but overall they make the game tolerable to those of us who don't necessarily want to have to pair off in order to get through any quests. I'm currently level 31 and while some missions can be a challenge, I never felt I needed another person to help me with a mission; unless it was a Heroic area or a Flashpoint, in which case it says on the mission "Heroic 2+" or "Heroic 4". And even with some of those, if you're far enough along in level or are that good a player, you can probably do it with just your companion.

Overall the game has appeal for people who care about story, but I think BW has made some critical missteps on server populations, releasing a (very) unfinished product despite a lengthy beta, and the fun little pieces that made WoW an enjoyable experience. I could detail them but it would be a long list. The game itself is fun and the soundtrack is great but I do have some concerns about my longevity in the game.

Yeah, my brother and I burn through the older raids 2 (PLD me, DK him) manning all of them. It's a freakin blast to see what we get every week. Some nice drops so far, he got an offhand Glaive, nearly full sets of Tiers 1,2, 4-10, getting old achievements we missed etc. unfortunately no luck on mounts so far with Kael, Attune etc.

Well that is a personal issue, one they need to work out. I always stand by the stance that if you don't enjoy a game, you should stop playing. I know someday that will happen with myself and WoW. Maybe it will even happen sometime not far after Mists comes out, who knows, but I know it will happen and accept that.

One of the biggest reasons I am holding off on TOR is not just money. My biggest worry is that all the things that people tell me are awesome, like the combat, companions, spaceship, dialogue, etc... It all just makes me feel like it should have been a single player game continuing the KOTOR series. Considering the added money and time barriers, that just feels like a detriment to me, rather then a boon. I know that is mostly me being unfair though, so I am trying to keep an open mind about it.

If your just selling the stuff to vendors, then whatever, but if your putting that stuff on the auction house (like some people were) then yes, EA and Bioware have a reason to be afraid of you messing up the market. I'm actually impressed to see them taking such an active interest in regulating the economy, as most devs would have just said "Fuck it" and let the player base go nuts.

I've seen the markets of too many games get completely ruined by a shitty economy. On the market in City of Heroes, it would often cost me hundreds of billions of Influence/Infamy to get the recipes and parts I needed for a build... and for reference, it would take about 2 hours of dedicated grinding to get maybe 1.5-2 million Influence/Infamy.

From what I understand, just going to that area and looting isn't what they're temp-banning for. The exploit in question involves stealthing into a high level area and abusing the pvp system in order to continually loot a specific container.

I haven't even been to Ilum yet, so I'm not sure what it is.

#447

SpecialKO

It's speculation since BW isn't saying, but supposedly the idea is that they (and some number of guys on the other side) were flipping the PvP zone in a rapid coordinated fashion to quickly respawn the "win" chests over and over again and then loot them with low-level characters that were standing in place.

That's a pretty clear exploit.

#448

This is part of it. There were also players hitting the slicing containers for obscene credit amounts in those zones.

However, what they were ALSO doing is using the money to corner the market on certain goods, in order to drive up prices for later profits. Well, except the ones who were selling the credits for dollars...

#449

Gared

Gared

I gotta say, so far I'm loving the game. There are (understandably) some bugs that need to be worked out, but we're in what, the third official week of the game? BW has made some choices that are kind of confusing, like the fact that you can't search for items on the auction house by name, or even search for armor by slot; and the one that really pissed me off (for like, 5 seconds) when I accidentally bought the wrong item with my Coruscant commendations and found out that selling commendation items back to the original vendor only nets credits instead of giving you back the commendations you spent on it - but it wasn't a big deal and I'll be more careful in the future. I really wish they had broken away from the EA standard of unsearchable forums and no dedicated tech support forum - if I can't find what I'm looking for in the FAQ my only choices are to call them or to fire up the magical Google machine and hope someone else had the same problem and posted about it elsewhere. But I haven't had a lot of problems with the game, overall. I haven't even had to turn off shadows like so many people whose computers are "top of the line" but can't run the game smoothly. Of course, I haven't done any PvP, Heroics, or Flashpoints yet, so that may change.

I do like that there's so much dialogue and good background music and interesting cut scenes. This is about the only game I play where I don't feel the need to run Netflix in the background so I have something to distract me from ambient household noise and to fill in the gaps between music starts and stops and cut scenes. I am mildly annoyed right now that I have to choose between having a healer companion and listening to Carlton Lassiter (Psych) endlessly commenting about my leadership style. Great choice of voice actor for that one.

I found out that I have to run a proxy to connect to the patching server when you open the launcher, but after THAT I can play the game without a proxy. My computer ran it reasonably I suppose, but not at high graphics. Just ordered a new gaming laptop with dual 2GB GeForce GTX 580Ms, so if that isn't enough, I don't know what will be. I played about an hour as an Imperial agent and I had a good time. My brother who's playing on Twin Spire told me the only disappointing thing he's run into is that nearly everyone on his server rolled up Sith, making some of the PVP rather lopsided.

It's an MMO. Everyone's a crazy murderer, even if you play a saint.

I was telling my friends that it's interesting to play as a light side Bounty Hunter, work through a target's base killing 50 of his soldiers and underlings, and then showing him mercy when you actually get to make a moral choice (freezing him in carbonite). According to the game, those 50 dudes you killed were morally neutral.

I like that when you consider it, being a Light Sith or Dark Jedi in a giant galaxy full of thousands of them actually makes a lot of sense in the SWTOR era. At that point, if you were a Force user, you're essentially being born into one or the other whatever your inclination. Maybe you're not a evil bastard or zen monk, but by the time you've developed into an adult, you're basically a Jedi or a Sith - you just may not be an ideal one according to your teachers.

And they show Revan face... lame.

Boom, level 50. Have a few more missions on Corellia, then I'll go and finish up Chapter 3. :)

I hit 50 Sunday morning. Ilum is the first planet I truly dislike.

I need to run some flashpoints or something I've been in total tunnel vision from 45-50 and now that I'm back to healer spec I need some practice.

#471

Dei

I tried to be healer spec, but there was 2 things that irritated me.
1.) It was exactly like playing a WoW priest (except for)
2.) The healer UI is a piece of crap. Which was true in WoW as well, but at least if you didn't have any mods to make it better you could at least have mouseover macros.

I have been leveling an Op as a healer with my husband's jugg, and I find I like Op healing so much more. Though I almost wish he had made a Sith Assassin tank so that we could just stealth everywhere. ;)

Yeah, I'm an Op and it definitely feels different to heal with an energy bar instead of a mana pool. I enjoy it but trying to solo the Ilum missions with groups of 2 or 3 strong enemies is rough.

Ran about 5 instances with a few guildies yesterday... was a total Sniper fest. I got at least 6 pieces of gear, 3 pieces of Columi. Good day.

Sniping is fun.

I find that as long as I keep my tank companion's gear up to date, I can manage all kinds of stupid things as heal spec. It takes me FOREVER, but things will eventually die. (I learned this the hard way when I was lower level and let Khem Val's gear fall behind.)

Healing spec while levelling is horribly painful, just like it is in every other MMO :( My poor Jedi Sage gets no love as a result. At least in WoW, my disc based priest was powerful enough to take on most; in SWTOR I can basically heal myself forever and wait for the badguys to die of old age.

Man I fought a silver mob that did that on Corellia. He had a good amount of health and two different healing techniques, and as a Bounty Hunter, I only have 2 interrupts, one of which is a minute-long cooldown. PLUS mobs don't have a mana/energy/force bar that can run out, and I was at max heat pretty quickly.

As a result, every thirty seconds, I would get a net 300-500 hp from the guy. I fought him for 7 solid minutes. And with him focussing on healing himself so much, and Mako healing me, I never went below like 98% health.

It was the most frustrating pull I've had.

Fortunately there was only one other mob like tat in te area and he was easily avoidable.

#478

Snuffleupagus

Snuffleupagus

Well, I just started a Jugg to play in between warzones.

Healing warzones as a healing Op is hilarious. I stealth into a blind corner and heal my ass off until everything is dead then I re-stealth and do it again. Some trooper spent a solid 5 minutes trying to find me hiding in mid because he saw me at the last second of a 10 person melee.

Ninja heals.

I kinda has a sad... I didn't really come into SW:TOR expecting much - I have a deep seated resentment of EA stemming from all of the crap they've produced recently (not to mention the colossal dick-monster flop that was Spore), plus their forum policies, and their complete and utter rejection of decent tech support standards; and a deep seated resentment of Lucas and his bullshit midichlorians (sp?), Jar-Jar, and smug sense of self-entitlement and self-importance. I mean, seriously dude, you made three awesome movies... over 20 years ago. Hell the third (original) movie released almost 30 years ago!

Regardless, I tried to come in just expecting a good game, not trying to hold it up to the original movies or to any other games out there and have fun with it on its own merits. I've come away bored with the game even faster than I got bored with Rift. I haven't even had the game for 2 weeks and it's just coming off as meh to me. And I think one of the things that annoys me the most is this whole companion thing. Sure, in other games there are classes that can have constant companions, but not all classes always rely on the fact that you do have constant companions, unlike SW:TOR. Why does my big bad-ass tank need a shooter companion? Why does my stupid head-tress alien seem to think it's wise to constantly pull targets away from me when I'm trying to wail on them with my Sith Warrior, then bitch about the fact that she's dying? Why can't my evil-to-the-core Pureblood Sith cut her down where she stands for being so insolent? Yeah, I know, I can use my other companion or "punish" her, but it's not like she learns from her mistakes. Why are so many of the dark side choices in the SW story-arc counter-productive for the empire? And why the hell are all of the Republic character such frickin' pansies? It's like we're playing frickin' hippy-pacifist-loons. "Oh, please don't hurt me Mr. Sith, I promise I'll be good and will leave this sector even though you're slaughtering the citizens whole-sale and corrupting children and running slaves."

Bah. Bah I say. Can't anyone put out a good game these days? If I want a challenge, do I really have to go back to playing Diablo II, or the original Starcraft, or WC III, or any game from any company before EA or Activision took them over?

Because that's what the dark side is... well that and cookies.

See, I do like Vette (though I wish she weren't so anti-dark side. I mean seriously, why is the first companion for SW a goody-two-shoes failure of an assassin?), I just wish I didn't have to choose between keeping her happy and staying evil.

But are they productive for you?

Because that's what the dark side is... well that and cookies.
Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't. I'd like the opportunity to play an intelligent but evil Sith Warrior, who does have the best interests of the empire in mind. Sometimes I feel like my only real choice is to either be a light-side Sith who wants the empire to succeed or a dark-side Sith who's all "herp derp, don't care if this loses the empire money/power/respect/etc., I's evil and it's what I says that goes."

It could be that the game's just not for me. Sad to find that out only after dropping $60 on it, but that's the way it goes, I guess. Just gotta remember to cancel before my monthly billing starts up.

#485

Ravenpoe

Ravenpoe

My Sith Juggernaut is full darkside, a total evil tyrant, and Vette loves him. She's even become much more self-assured, taking charge of her own life, and obediently follows her lord on mass murder sprees.

#486

Dei

Dei

I haven't really seen a huge advantage to being fully light side or dark side. Even the light/dark vendors suck, and the lvl 50 stuff is moral neutral anyways, so IMO just make whatever decisions you want and fuck it.

#487

Gared

Gared

Huh. Maybe I need to slap her around more... or my problem could be the one time I chose not to kill someone, and she remarked at how kind I'd been, and I chose a chat option that I thought would come out as something along the lines of "evil me will be back soon," but instead it came out as "don't expect it to apply to you" so now she thinks I'm just mean to her.

Not that it really matters. The game itself is starting to bore me, so getting Vette to like me isn't really likely to change things.

#488

Adam

Adammon

I wish the game designers would have the characters literally say what you chose in the spin wheel. Too often I chose something that I interpreted as a sarcastic response to a stupid question; and the character said something that was similar enough to see that it could be interpreted that way, but nowhere near what my intention was.

#489

Dei

Dei

I hate the fact that light side/dark side options mostly come down to "smart choice, and stupid choice". I think the IA storyline for the *most* part does light side/dark side the right way, but the Inquisitor and Consular story lines boiled down to "Kill him/Don't kill him", which was basically stupidity. And don't even get me started on the light side/dark side options for generic planet quests...

#490

@Li3n

@Li3n

Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't.

Actually that's pretty good, as long as they do initially appear to favour you the most...

Well if all the DS choices hurt the Empire, then it's a problem... if not then the real problem is the fact that having both light and dark points isn't different from having only one type...

Otherwise, a computer game will always be pretty much unable to differentiate from helping others out of goodness and doing it because it's advantageous for you...

I agree. I just think that there are some issues with the way BioWare designed the dark side factions. Some of the choices are pretty stupid, like chastising you for recommending that an assassin who failed in her mission be killed because "a good tool is a useful thing." How is someone who failed in her assassination mission a "good tool?" She failed for cryin' out loud. If she'd been arrested after killing her target, that'd be different, but if I wanted to send someone to fail to kill a republic agent, I'd send an apprentice, or any of the imperial soldiers I run into on missions, or my master - he's pretty friggin' useless. It just seems to me like they got a really "in-touch with their dark side" programmer to do the initial programming and then someone came along afterward and said "You know... there are going to be kids playing this game and we can't have them thinking that we're OK with all of these choices. We better brighten things up a little, this is too dark." So now you just have a mess.

Dark Side decisions that seem to piss people off will often come around your way in the mail.

I've made Light Side decisions with my Bounty Hunter that, following the laws of unintended consequences, have ruined the lives of NPCs.

#493

Ravenpoe

Ravenpoe

I actually liked that little conversation about the failed assassin. Killing her was the 'dark side' option that earned her darkside points on your morality scale, but it wasn't the choice your master hoped you would pick. That was a very early quest, and the purpose of it was to show that the empire isn't all murder all the time, and that sometimes even mercy can be a tool of the dark side, if it benefits you in the end.

And hey, if you -want- to murder her anyway, then you're free to, and you can tell your master to piss off. Because you're goddamn sith.

#494

Yeah the early Sith Warrior quests actually helped teach me how to play Dark Side Sith: be ruthless, be intelligent, and above all, be decisive.
