This is cool. I had envisioned a game setting like, after the drow had done something terrible from the Underdark, ruling an unholy mess leftover of what they'd destroyed of a kingdom. I also like that there's a specific situation in mind to begin.

But--I thought Doom's games were going to be the alternating, once-a-month. This game may coincide with either that game or Jay's game, since Jay doesn't necessarily take a break the last Thursday of a month. For example, this month, Jay won't be able to DM the 21st, but the last Thursday, the 28th, he will. Are you quitting that game?

#3

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

The first game can be flexible, but moving forward I'd like to stick with a set date and time.

Also, religion will be simplified in this world, 3 superior gods and six major gods.

Jay

Jay

As previously discussed, I am VERY interested in joining your game HC. I feel I can learn a lot of finer tips that I can incorporate in my game one day.

What are the race limitations beyond your hated Gnomes? Svirfneblin allowed right? :)

I was considering either using my new wizard or a ranged rogue. :ninja:

#5

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Any and all races outside of gnomes are allowed. The realm of your origins is one of abundant magic and embracing of a variety or races and species.

I also use Bennies in my games. For those of you not aware of Bennies, they are a gift for good RP/gamesmenship. They do not carry over from one session to the next, you can have up to three at a time and can redeem them at any time to re-roll any single roll any player makes.

Bennies!

I'm in! It's bard time.

#8

Jay

Like I said count me in as either a Ranged Rogue (Striker) or Wizard (Controller) as primary interests. I'm not interested in Defender at all and would rather avoid having to be a Leader but I could myself remotely play either a Bard or a Warlord.

#9

Gusto

Gusto

I got Leader covered.

#10

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Okay, so the first session is this Thursday?

I like this setting idea. I'll come up with a character within the next day or so. BTW, if you can't host Gametable for one reason or another, it's easy enough for someone else to host and then you control the pogs and stuff like normal. I only say this because whenever we've had someone do DMing on Gametable for the first time, something goes awry.

Which gods are allowed? And it won't be visible on my character sheet, with the added Arcana, but I'll add it to my numbers at the time. I'll consider whether my Pally/Avenger's story should go in, but right now I'm pretty set on him as a backup for Jay's game. I'll think of someone knew and plot-related for this.

#11

MindDetective

MindDetective

If doom's game doesn't get off the ground, I'd be interested. Perusing over the options, if I were to play (and I wouldn't only opt in to one game) I'd try a Shardmind Artificer, I think. That might change as I read up on the artificer further, though.
Added at: 21:49
Bah, nevermind! Leader is covered.

Gusto

Gusto

Are we starting at level 1?

#13

MindDetective

Then I would probably play a serious monk, since I've got that one figured out already. No goofy backstory, but a real lock-in-a-monastery kind of monk.

#14

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

I don't know if both games are going ahead (I think Jay, Doom, and HC need to have a private conversation so the players aren't getting tossed around like peanut bags), but if they do, you may want to play a different class between each.

(Really, really encouraging Jay, HC, and Doom to talk about schedule stuff. Maybe we'll set up a D&D calendar or something, which I'd be willing to do the updating on once the DMs sort things out, so everyone can know who's in what and when those games are happening.)

And I'll be happy to be the Defender if no one else wants to.

Count me in then. Thursdays work well enough for me, although my wife will probably miss having me around once a month, as that's one of her few nights off. :)

I'll make a few adjustments to the monk I was working up and just run with it. Human monk, Iron Soul build. I have it on paper since people were using the character builder a lot today, so I'll post details later.

#25

doomdragon6

doomdragon6

HC can have the slot. I was never 100% and HC can give you guys a little more of what you want. No feelings hurt on my end.

I, however, won't join this game. Lets some new people get in, and every now and then I can have a Thursday free to.... listen in or something. XD
Added at: 00:33
Oh, PS: HC has the exact same start-up that I was thinking of. I was going to have you all on a sailing ship. Stupid HC reading my mind.

#26

Jay

Jay

Cool beans Doom. :)

Count me in as a Wizard. Going to play around with character possibilities the next few days.

#27

rathkor

I think I might just tweak my Shardmind, make him less evil and take away the evil god worshipping part.
Added at: 02:07
actually, i think i'm gonna go with an Eladrin Tempest Fighter.

#28

MindDetective

MindDetective

I might have a scheduling conflict with last Thursday of the Month If it was last Wednesday, it would be easier. This month my father-in-law is coming to town. I could probably wrangle something, but May I will be in Washington D.C. (arriving Thursday, I think) and in July I'm moving to Oregon at that time. Not sure if there is a possibility of moving it. I actually do have a lot of time on my hands. Just not last Thursdays, apparently.

#29

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

For a while we can start with the last Tuesday of the month. That would make us starting on April 26th.

Leader - Gusto's Bard
Controller - Jay's Wizard
Striker - MD's Monk
Defender - Rathkor's fighter

So that makes one of each role, so Esc and Far if you want to play can choose any role to play.

#30

MindDetective

MindDetective

I think I'll be back from the conference by May 31st, so that would work. That does fix my July conflict too. Next Tuesday I will have to make sure I can get away with my father-in-law in town but I think it is doable.

#31

MindDetective

MindDetective

How do I add in the bonus feat and skill when going through character creation in the online builder? I've got everything picked out but need to choose a magic item and add in the house-ruled additions.

#32

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

I'm not sure if the online builder allows for house ruled characters, I can easily duplicate it and make the adjustments for you.

#33

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, I'll output the dnd4e file as it is. I'll just add in text the magic item I select, then. I'm starting to get a handle on rituals. So if I have the ritual caster feat can I spend some money on a ritual book and rituals to carry with me then? As a monk, I have rather inexpensive things to buy otherwise.

#34

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

You can take a ritual book for free, and outside of your ki focus monks have very little to buy.

Take 2 rituals to start. Most characters that get it for free start with 2, so those of you getting the feat for free may start with two.

And I encourage you to expand your rituals beyond a paper book with ink, rituals written as tatoos or on sticks are some options.

#35

MindDetective

MindDetective

How are rituals selected, then? Do I begin with none and learn them in-game as needed?

#36

MindDetective

MindDetective

Here's my guy. Let me know if I made some poor choices or did something wrong. I basically followed the character creator. Also, I'm torn between an amulet of protection +2 or a magic ki focus +2 for my item. Neither are exciting choices but should be helpful enough. Advice?

Attachments

#37

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Modified it back from essentials, added the free feats, gave you a +2 ki focus and you can select a 3rd at will power (essentials vs 4e difference). Also selected some rituals that might suit the build, not sure how the online builder works for house ruling, but there are plenty of other options, to explore them just try making a generic wizard.

Over all the build looks very viable and dependable.

#38

Jay

Jay

So, I assume for my Wizard I can get a free Ritual Book and 2 Rituals? Any limitations?

#39

Gusto

Gusto

MD, with your monk unarmed strike, you don't really need a club. Your fist has a higher chance to hit and does more damage than a club anyway.

I changed a couple things, here's my lady:

PLUS the 3 rituals you get a 1st level wizard ANYWAY. Then you automatically get more at I think 5th level.

By holding a club his build and feat selection grant him +2 to AC.

Jay, wizards already get a free ritual book, so in addition to the free rituals you normally get, take 2 additional rituals. No restrictions, just steer clear of essentials.

#41

MindDetective

MindDetective

I was leaning towards the magic weapon. I was also considering Amanuensis for a ritual, since it fits with the monk backstory (monks being famous transcribers!) though perhaps not terribly exciting as a ritual. Also, I know quarterstaves are two-handed but it seems like it could serve as useful equipment, if not as an occasional weapon. Finally, third at-will selection: Five Storms [Attack Technique]

Yeah things like rituals and familiars are not covered by the online builder in the slightest.

#45

MindDetective

MindDetective

I'm trying to navigate the glossary for a lot of clarifications. What's the difference between a daily and an encounter power? /noob

#46

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Something that is a daily can typically only be used once between extended rests. (~ 24 hours)
Encounters can be used once between short rests. (~every 5 minutes)

#47

MindDetective

MindDetective

Oh, that makes perfect sense now. Thanks!

Rituals are RP, thus not essential to gameplay....

Seriously, they have been left out as essentials has been designed to help people join the game quickly, and rituals were seen as limiting that.

id like to ask what rituals everyone is taking so the two i pick dont end up being used already

I'm thinking of dropping Fastidiousness for Amanuensis. Bad idea? Does Amanuensis allow me to transcribe other people's rituals into scrolls or my own book? Obviously with great effort, if it does.

#56

Gusto

Gusto

It should be noted that I have Bardic Ritualist as a class feature, meaning I can cast bardic rituals once a day for now component cost. If other people can't think of rituals they want, I'll give up Comrade's Succor or Silence in order to take more bardy stuff.

#57

Jay

So, what is your character's alignment?

I'm planning either a Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil. Fuck the new alignment system. :)

Neutral/Chaotic Good.

#59

MindDetective

MindDetective

Neutral. Can Allytyn, the force of time, be effectively worshipped/honored. Not that Allytyn would care one way or the other but it seems like an interesting choice.

#60

rathkor

i was never sure EXACTLY where lines were drawn on alighnments. Chaotic Neutral, as a guess. Basically, my guy would go out of his way to help people, but at the same time he would prefer there to be a reward in it. He wouldn't harm innocents, but he's not afraid to kill enemies or people who have really wronged him.

Neutral on the Good/Evil axis.

Neutral leaning towards Evil, if it's all for personal reasons and not because they're a genuinely bad person.

Nothing you've described sounds particularly Chaotic or Lawful.
Added at: 18:31
I'd say you're character sounds Neutral Good, Rathkor. Sounds like everything he does is fairly dependent on it serving himself in some way, but he recognizes when people genuinely need help and will assist them independently of his own benefit.

bout right.

Zeverom (sp?) is a loose-moraled, sex-hungry elf from Dragon Age: Origins.

If the Tuesday is going to coincide with weeks where we also play Jay's game, I don't know if I'll be playing. Are you guys coordinating that at all or just winging it?

#69

From before time and thought, before the physical and intangible there has been the mother of all Allytyn. Alone she was for uncountable eons, the essence of time energy that comprised the cosmos.

From her bosom did she bring forth twin brothers, Shalm and Malkath. Twin brothers of the same soul, one always seeking change, the other restrained stability. Along with their mother did they form the structure and chaos that is the universe. The great planes took shape and remain sacrosanct, populated by the chaotic forces of life.

Seeing that this was good did Allytyn create the guardians of the planes and all within them. Great beasts of flesh with the essence of their mother within their breasts. For they could control time itself along with the magical fabric of the cosmos. One day these beasts would be named by the denizens of the planes as Dragons.

Seeing a need to help further represent their nature amongst the universe. Allytyn did mate five times. These unions created six children who borrowed from their parents nature and spread their own natures amongst the planes.

“a tale of hate”

Long ago, longer than mankind can remember, the Lawgiver walked through the garden of heaven, holding hands with Frostmother and they were admiring what they had created. For down in the forests of Sheanere, their elves had grown wise and strong. Their music and crafts rivalled the drawings of Ambrosia in their loveliness.

The were not alone though, skulking behind them in the undergrowth, Dralk stood brooding and hateful.

“Why should she choose him and not me?!! I am strong! He is passive, I dominate the creatures below, he just watches them. She should have not chosen him to mate with, I am the stronger and I will show it!”

The beast then took his feces, which he had been saving for some purpose. And he used it to form the shaped of two small humanoids, then with his spit and sweat he gave life to them. From that day on, goblins walked the earth.

Rathkor are you aware that your two-weapon fighter only has one power that uses a second weapon? If these are te powers you wanna stick to, that's cool, my bard is doing something similar at first level, I just wanna make sure you know.

#76

rathkor

for now, yes, only the one power. i am trying to round him out with some single target abilities as well, so i will still be useful in solos. i'm also taking advantage of some abilities that take advantage of my high dex. basically i'm going for a defender with some control elements. its a little odd, but i've run a character similar to this that worked pretty well.

Introducing your world!

Two large continents and two large islands. Eight nations with a variety of climates, riverlands, mountains, grasslands, deserts, artic wastelands and tropical paradises.

The nation of MUKI, furthest north of the civilized lands, with two large cities; Uradzaj and Vosie. It is a vast land of horses and grain.

To it's west is the nation of ZBOZZA, renowned for it's furious winds and blowing plains of wheat and corn. It has two large cities Fiermier and Avios,, the latter being a massive harbour city filled with secrets.

To the south is FORET a nation dominated by lush forests and a vast variety of wildlife. It's cities are Clairiere and Ete, renowned for their science and culture.

On they southern continent you will find the river nation of RIOS and it's twin cities of Vint and Avena. Rios is a nation of travellers and and wizards.

Splitting the southern continent in two is the great desert of COL, home the fabled city of Persolacquo, City of Lost Water in the common tongue. It is a land dominated by the mystery fey and at night said to from vampires from the sand itself.

A cousin to it's neighbours to the north is GRANO, a rich farming nation with a large commercial city in Cotone and the great mining city of Farina

Bounded by the great sailing straights are the island nations. LALAW is a tropical paradise with a mysterious mountain range filled with volcanoes and questions, it has one city Mansanas who make some of the finest ships that have ever sailed.

And central to all is the wealthy nation of KABISERA, home to the largest city in the world Kabi, the home of government for the world and the powerful merchant and sailing guilds. It has a strong religious city on it's northern shore that see proud temples from all faiths existing in a precarious harmony.

Excellent question. The party is travellling from Uradzaj in MUKI through the Straight of Fair Winds to the city of Cotone in GRANO.

Feel free to generate any reason to be on the boat (save senior naval personnel). The ship is a large cargo vessel but also has many spaces for travellers.

Rituals I'm considering. Kevin? What think you?

Tenser's Floating Disk
Amanuensis
Secret Page
comprehend Language
Make Whole
Explorer's Fire
Silence
Tenser's is fantastic. The rest are all fine - the deal with first level rituals is they all seem fairly tame, and if everyone in the party gets rituals, we're bound to overlap in picking them just because we wanna avoid the super useless ones.

That said, I already have Comprehend Language and Silence, so if there were others you wanted you might go with them instead. ;)

You still have to pay for focuses. Your general knowledge of arcana and experience with it do to the over abundance of it in Aime are the reasons for your elevated expertise in Arcana, possesion of magic items and use of rituals.

ok, well of all the Rituals availible to level one characters, the only ones i can really see my character having is Purify Water and Make Whole. maybe Unseen Servant, but I can't afford the focus. so if there are no objections, i will take those two.

Excellent. Still need characters from Far and Jay. And we need to get MindDetective and Far their own versions of Jay's gametable.

I'm not a wizard with music and sound effects like Jay, so hopefully this song uploaded correctly as it will be played at least once if not more during the first session by those that you encounter.

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Please feel free to share as much or as little as you choose with the other players. The more you share with me though, the more I will build into the game for you.

Now back to some concepts for you not covered in the other thread;

Encounters, Milestones and Action Points.

Encounters are typically short periods of time where you try to accomplish something, either in combat or out of combat. It typically has a goal to be accomplished set out by the DM and you either succeed or fail, but the DM always tells you when you have begun one, because ENCOUNTER is an official word in the game design.

Milestones are meant to represent when you have achieved something significant, again MILESTONE is an official term and I will tell the party when they have achieved one. It has several effects in game, as several things are keyed to it's occurrence. On of those is the gaining of an ACTION POINT.

Action Points are used to "buy" an action. You may only use 1 action point per encounter and you can use it gain another action, typically on your turn, and typically everyone uses them to get another standard action on their turn. Action Points are typically used to combine 2 or more actions in a single turn into a devastating effect.

Milestones I wasn't sure on, but the rest I've got down. Am I going to be the only human in the party? Also, are people connecting backstories in any way? Not sure how I would tie a monk into anyone else's story but I'm open to ideas.

Gathering the effects of a deceased family member? Trying to immigrate and being turned away? Seeking out a long-lost or run-away relative and finding nothing? Dropping out of bard school? :)

I needed a reason to have left the monastery. I think it will be a delivery of elaborate, hand-copied religious texts to missionaries or benefactors of the monastery. Still working it out, though, and maybe it will change if my backstory is to intertwine with someone else's.

I AM the runaway. The world is my oyster and I'm choosing to... come back. Hm.

MindDetective

MindDetective

Could be a bit of a blend, then. Ran away, then got word that a close relative died/was ill and it changed your mind? Could also be the reason you ran away wasn't as expected or disappointing (or non-existant?) and with nowhere else to go, returning home. Could be returning home because your escorting someone (the only gig you could get) and so are grudgingly returning. I guess you could have been caught and are being dragged back home by your ear!

Or you could have been forcibly deported, maybe even while unconscious, by rivals/racists/music-haters and now you're on a boat that you can't get off of until you arrive home.

To understand me, you must first understand what it means to live in Persolacquo.

The City of Lost Water exists in different states, dependent on Aime's bilunar cycles. For most of the time, everything is normal; the city sits at the desert's edge, firmly in the Prime Material. But two weeks out of every eight, when Aime's twin moons are at their apex, there is a planar shift. Buildings and their contents appear from the plane of Rikkirikki, Lady Ambrosia's plane, known to some outsiders as the "feywild". This is a time of great happiest and rejoicing for my people. Some say there is no lovelier place on Aime than Persolacquo in Ambrosia phase in the daylight, especially when the sprites dance and the flowers bloom. The most fortunate among us can count our birth days among these hallowed times. Like my parents, they become respected and loved the entire city over. It was largely because of tis blessed birth that they were able to attain High Clerichood at the local Temple of Ambrosia.

However, this phasing doesn't come without it's dark side - the opposite two weeks of the cycle. When the moons are gone and the night is darkest, buildings and denizens from Lilith's plane of Ssssssth appear in Persolacquo. The living citizens of the city tread this fortnight carefully, living in fear, especially at night, when the vampires have been known to come. These are the darkest of times.

Living with such dramatic highs and lows in this city of art and magic comes with its superstitions of course. Since the phasing is tied to the moons, the daylight, and the people born during it, are revered as a source of stability, honesty, and pride within the community. They are the blessed Sunkissed. The Moonchildren on the other hand, come to represent the extreme highs and lows of the city - flirtatious and secretive, flighty and often dangerous. People look upon these people with pity and even sometimes prejudice, as though they are better than them just because of the time they were born!

Well, imagine my parents' stunned silence when I, their youngest daughter, was born a moonchild in the phase of Lilith.

They kept my birth a secret until the next Ambrosia phase. I don't know if it was selfish, necessarily, like they wanted to save the Xilsciente family the societal shame of having birthed a moonchild. I think they just wanted to protect me and make sure I grew up right. Mom kept a closer eye on my activities and outings a lot more than she did for my brother and sister, and for the longest time I thought it was just because I was the baby of the family. My dad was more forceful in his protectiveness. He went out of his way to make sure I studied heavily in the clerical tradition, never left the temple after dark, and so on.

As I grew into adolescence, I was only an occasional annoyance to my family. My father would find me wrapped up in story books or arcane tomes, rather than the religious texts he had set out for me. My mother would scold me after I sneaked back into the house, out at night when I shouldn't have been, playing lyre at the tavern. It became clear to the whole family that my heart wasn't into sticking around the city my whole life, living a strict religious life. I yearned to break free, to see the world I had read about so much, to create stories of my own.

My father, determined to quash this rebellious streak, grew even more determined than ever to keep me in Persolacquo, to make me the proud daughter he'd always wanted.

They arranged a marriage for me. To my best friend, the Sunkissed son of one of the city's councilors. The night they told me was one of the most intense of my life, so much arguing and crying. After mother had gone to bed in tears, and father had gone angry, I decided that enough was enough.

I took my mother's eladric cloak and teleported from the temple, heading northeast across the desert towards the port town of Cotone. I left during the Lilith phase, so that even if the family wanted to pursue me, they'd be too superstitious to be out in the wilds overnight. They'd have to wait at least a week to avoid the vampires. Silly superstitions, there were no "vampires". Or at least I didn't see any.

With nothing on me but a few of my favourite volumes from the temple, my cloak and my lyre, I had to play music and dance in Cotone in order to finance my passage overseas. But I finally scrounged up enough gold to finance the beginning of my journey to see Aime at large. This is my chance to see the world, learn new stories, meet new people!

I am Solaria of the Golden Petals, and this is just the beginning of my stories.

Locian (pronounced low-she-an) was born into a very normal Eladrin life. His family lived on the very edges of the Feywild. His parents were strict and stern by Eladrin standards. Whenever possible, they would avoid doing dealings with other races, especially Humans and Dwarves. Locian did not agree with his parents on this. He was fascinated by other races and their cultures. He would sneak away from his home and visit the tavern of a nearby human settlement whenever possible. The settlement was small and only served as a safehaven for passing adventurers. He spent many an evening in the tavern, mesmirized by the tales of far away worlds and mystical creatures. One day, a party consisting of an Eladrin fighter, a Dwarf, two humans, and a Dragonborn entered into the tavern. after the Dwarf was nice and drunk, he told a tale of a large red jewel, carved into the shape of a dragon heart. it was apparently stolen by a small band of master thieves, and they had been hired to track down and retrieve the jewel, and return it to the kingdom that hired them. Locian overheard the Dragonborn and the Eladrin discussing the need to hire on more recruits. Locian saw this as an oppertunity to finally live out the stories he'd been hearing for years. He excitedly rused over to the two and volunteered to join them. The two invited Locian up to a room they rented for the night to interview him privately.

Locian told them of his fighting experience, though he left out that it was all sparring and lessons he took since childhood, and that he had never been in a real fight in his entire life. they appeared to believe him, as they agreed to bring him along. The next morning, Locian, the party, and three humans the others managed to recruit, headed out. The new recruits were outfitted with crude swords and worn leather armor.

The thieves were tracked down to a small cave. the party managed to extenguish any threat from the thieves, and Locian even managed to get one or two of the thieves. some injuries were sustained, but no one was seriously hurt. The jewel was recovered and returned, and the party was handsomely rewarded. Locian used his cut to buy an impressive longsword and shortsword, as well as some sturdy chainmail armor.

Later that night, Locian was approached by the Eladrin, who had earlier revealed his name to be Aramil and was the de facto leader of the party. He told Locian that he had known from the beginning that Locian had exagerated his combat prowess, but that he saw potential and eagerness in the young Eladrin. He agreed to teach the Locian better fighting Techniques and survival skills.

After several years and many, many missions, the group, plus and minus a few members, set out on a personal quest to find a treasure rumored to have once belonged to one of the most famous pirate captains of the last 200 years. the treasure was supposedly buried in a gave that has since been turned into a goblin hideout. The party went in and made quick work of the goblins. we made it to the chamber where the treasure was supposed to be burried. before the party could even break out the shovels, they were ambushed by a mecenary gang they have competed against for longer than Locian had been a part of the group. The mercenaries had them outnumbered four to one. The leader of the mercenaries, a Tiefling named Leucis, ordered his men to attack, and the party fought back with all their might. Aramil Fey Stepped away from a couple of bruisers and appeared beside Leucis. The two fought and moved, dissappearing from the sight of everyone else. After minutes of fighting, the last of the mecenary grunts had fallen. The party had suffered many losses, but a few, including Locian, remained alive. Tired and injured, only Locian, while being cut up and bruised, still appeared to be able to move freely. There was a screaming from deeper in the caves, and Locian moved to investigate.

Locian arrived in time to see Aramil lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Locian ran over to his side and tried to stem the flow of the bleeding, but it was coming out to fast for him to stop.

"Locian, I am proud of what you have become," Aramil wispered weakly. "You remind me of the son I lost long ago."

"And you were a better father to me than even my own," Locian replied, tears streaming down his face.

"You have grown a lot these past four years. I've taught you everthing I can. Now it is up to you to take down Leucis once and for all. Take this and hurry, you musn't let him escape." Aramil raised his hand and presented Locian with his sword.

Without saying a word, Locian took the sword and walked deeper into the caves. There he found a wounded Leucis. Without a tought or care, Locian charged Leucis, swinging both swords wildly. Leucis struggled to parry the blows, but every third or fourth strike would hit. Finally, Locian managed to disarm Leucis, sending his broadsword sliding across the cave floor. Lovian then thrust forward with Aramil's longsword, sinking it deep into the Tiefling's chest.

"This isn't over," Leucis said. "You don't know how far this goes." Leucis then coughed up blood and dropped to his knees.

Locian helped the remaining survivors get back to the feet, and they left the cave.

For the next few weeks, Locian mourned the loss of his friend. He wasn't sure he would ever recover. it was then that Orsik, a Dwarf who had been part of the party since long before Locian joined, tried to help Locian out.

"He wouldn't want you moping around, ya know," he said. "You got to just get over it. I mean, you could go at any minute yourself, so ya might as well live life to the fullest while you can. That's what Aramil believed."

Those words echoed in Locian's head for days. He knew that Orsik was right. One day he woke up and started packing his things. He told the remaining party members that he was leaving to see the world and what it had to offer: the people, the sights, and the treasure. Orsik told him that he would be taking over the group, and that Locian was welcome back at any time.

I was born the fourth of four boys and became older brother to three favored sisters. The middle child, I stood to never inherit my father's inn, a hospitable stay for sailors and merchants alike. The eldest two of my brothers, Rast and Orum, took our father's place, married, and prospered. Garret, the third, joined the army, rising to become one of the respected color guard and eventually marrying as well. My sisters all had many suitors, each in due time, and though I may have caught the eye of young women myself, everyone knew I held no prospects. My choices were few and my father, a stern but pious member of the community, could well predict that my rising interest in Fallaya and Kess, among others, would lead to heartache and dishonor. So he forced me to choose: Join the army like my brother or join the Temple of Allytyn. Even I could recognize my life needed direction, or so I like to believe now, in my wickedness towards the other boys my age. I still do not know which of their parents sent my father into such a rage. Was it Fallaya's worried mother or one of the boys I had bloodied behind the fish market? I can hardly see their faces any more. I was an instrument of suffering to many and perhaps that was why I sought peace.

“We do not have much,” brother Wembley told me on my second day at the temple, “so your destruction of a single ewer is costly.” It was one of the weakest scoldings I'd ever been given and for a moment I took pity. These men had no children and would no doubt wither beneath my adolescent temper. I regretted my choice in the temple for weeks, then months. A year passed and I still strained against the yoke, trying to drive my placid masters to thrash me or belittle me. I earned every bit of retribution that I imagined they would give. Yet with each curse and hurled inkpot, they calmly corrected me and put me back to work. I transcribed scores of pages of the Tempori, a minor holy text, tended the potatoes, and pressed the paper. I helped cook, swept the chambers, and spent many evenings in silence wishing Allytyn would herself would call my hour. 'Please,' I prayed to her indifferent ears, 'change my lot.'

The second year was easier and the third brought a semblance of peace. Routine became comfortable and I grew patient. At last brother Wembley took me aside in the most curious of his many asides. “The brothers and I are worried about you,” he said. “You have grown complacent.”

Five years had passed and I had become accustomed to a strict routine. It had not changed from one day to the next for nearly two months. “Allytyn delights in the shifting seasons,” said the brother. “She will look past you if you stand still for too long.”

“My breakfast differs from my supper,” I said, trying to emulate his wisdom. But I knew he was right. I had sat still too long beneath her gaze and she would surely turn away. I was gripped with an uncertain fear.

“Consider the missionaries,” said brother Wembley. He needed to make no other argument beyond that.

The missionaries train in a secluded monastery and, for the first time in my life, I left Kabi to join my brothers in the hills several leagues away from the city and the sea. At first the change brought sleeplessness and doubt but I began to reconcile my choice and my faith. Far removed from the center of my faith, my family, and my home, I sought to train with the famous missionaries of Allytyn. I learned to care for the sick and to defend myself against highwaymen. I learned to convey the tenets of my faith and to understand the depths of my belief. Time eroded and it also thrust the mountains towards the heavens. I would be a force for change and mote of dust in its current. I would shape the beliefs and the fortunes of savage men and float along the winds of Allytyn's breath.

“Know when to push,” brother Wembley always said, “and know when to bend.”

I learned to minister but there was no subtlety to my ministry. I spoke with conviction but not persuasion, Wembley said. My talents lay in my physical training. I feared the world, as did all the missionaries. We trained to leave for dangerous lands and carry with us dangerous ideas that would challenge the word of powerful leaders. We prepared for our final hour, as only Allytyn saw it.

Brother Wembley's final hour came. We had sailed to Vosie and were ministering to small villages along the coast to Uradzaj. We traveled together after two years of my training at the monastery. Wembley had not ministered in many years but I knew he felt I was not ready to set forth on my own and it was not unusual for a new missionary to accompany a veteran. Allytyn saw otherwise.

We were following the ruts of merchant wagons that frequented the villages of Muki. The sky was overcast and our robes were stained with the reddish clay that dominated the soil there. The road wound along a windblown bluff and the wind and curves of the road disguised the runaway carriage. Two horses stampeded around the bend, the wheels locked into the ruts of the road. We both reacted, me jumping off the road and him shoving at the air where I was. Wembley's instinct to save me killed him, the resentment for which I pray each day to no longer feel. Couldn't he have trusted me to my training? He lay dying, his body broken by hooves and wagon wheels, and he gasped unintelligibly. “Know...bend...the praise...of her...” he said, then drew me closer. “Push.”

I wept alone on the bluff at the loss of my friend. I felt no injustice or anger. I merely missed brother Wembley. Change had come too suddenly, dear Allytyn.

Inara is the youngest of three children of a minor noble house. From an early age she was brought up in noble traditions. While the attention of the family was far more interested in the two elder boys and the disappointed that her mother bore a girl than another boy she grew up largely ignored by the family. Despite this sad state of affairs the young woman not only showed some magical ability at a very young age but also an incredible thirst for knowledge spending her days learning and reading spending her evenings poring over the extensive volumes in the manor's library. Many such tomes were written in the Elven script and Inara eventually became fluent in that language.

Upon reaching adulthood and with no chance of inheriting the family's landholdings (and frankly, she held no inclination to take on that responsibility) she did what many who held such thirst of knowledge and because a student in a respected magic school.

Though Inara excelled as a student she found the strict discipline and consistent attempts to slow her progress stifling and with true noble demeaner... quite unbearable. When her apprenticship ended, at age 25, Inara took her leave of the school. She was glad to have put this part of her behind her and she ambitious carved out some plans to talents to good use and to strengthen her knowledge, no matter the cost.

With her wealth she procurred the necessary tomes to read in her private study and honed her skill, whispered her devotion in the temple to provide her with the necessary boon to unlock a great power, endlessly sought knowledge. She knew however one day, she had to go elsewhere.

After two years of this lifestyle, Inara slowly began to feel a profound loneliness and ennui overtook her. Long has she heard of another library that she could visit across the sees and thus seeked to procure passage on the next passenger boat. As the boat journies across the sea, Inara remains in her room, studing and constantly writing in her spellbook every once in awhile making sure to enchant her book that no one but her can read up on her progress.

-----------

While Inara doesn't like to get involved in fights, she does enjoy finishing off her enemies in the most dreadful way she can come up with because after all, what better fate do they deserve? She would rather speak when it is absolutely necessary and when she does, she makes sure she doesn't speak for nothing, wasting words is not something she cannot abide. Inara is assertive and driven yet can reveal a sly side that rivals the best of rogues silvery tongues in the kingdom. She is very sangfroid and analytical when it comes to situations where she has to estimate an enemy or situation.

Average height and average weight with an average frame with the little care taken to her looks, her beauty is undiscovered by others who view the ordinary looking magus who is more often looking down to her spellbook than in the eyes of others. Unless of course, something is needed from them, then Inara comes with a way to use her silvery tongue to get what she wants.

Everything looks great so far, just a quick note for Far.

When using gametable macros, please use 2d20h1+8 this will give a result of (2,15) = 23 as your result. That will streamline the advantage Avengers have with their Oath of Enmity. Whenever you are denied your oath or it is not applicable you can use the same macro and we will take the 1st number of d20, in the example above that would be a 2.

By using the 2d20h1 you save a lot extra space in the rolling screen.

I planted a single triangular stone in the middle of a circle at the head of his grave such that it pointed up towards Allytyn and sloped in the direction of his final hour. On a sunny day in the late spring of each year, the shadow of the stone's pointed tip would commemorate brother Wembley's death by falling squarely on its pointed base. It was a crude memorial but one fitting with our traditions.

I walked, drawing myself inward to weather the painful passage of time. Allytyn had never been so uncaring as that long, solitary march. We in the brotherhood of Allytyn embrace her indifference. It gives us comfort and strength to recognize the limits of our existence and the potential of our actions. Allytyn is not moved by our worship but it is not for her that we pray. It is for ourselves. I prayed long past the villages we were set to minister and long through the cold, blustery nights.

On the third day after Wembley's final hour, I found my release. A hawk, native to the bluffs and shore here, rose high into the sky and circled me as I walked. At first I did not notice it, except in passing, but it soared silently in great, regular arcs for many miles. My companion, as that was how I thought of the hawk by the late afternoon, seemed almost playful at times and my heart lifted. I remembered that Wembley's passing was but a single grain of sand in Allytyn's hourglass. I had recited the passages in trying to remember this fact but it did not truly resonate until the playful hawk had joined my travel. Then clarity returned and my grief subsided to a dull ache. When I stopped for a sparse meal of salted pork and hard bread, the hawk screeched once and flew back the way we had come. I watched her (for I somehow knew it was a female) until she was only a speck on the horizon.

When I arrived in Uradjaz, I made my way directly to the temple. I had never before been to this city or this temple but it was immediately familiar. The brothers, some of whom had known Wembley, offered prayers and consolation. One brother Jak sent a message to Kabi and also offered to accompany me on my next ministry. I declined. “I am ready,” I said, “though Allytyn delights in the changing seasons. Send me far from Muki, brother, and I will spread our gospel to all who will listen.”

He led me to the scribes, who had bound two fine books, transcribed by seventeen monks over the course of three years. “Carry our words,” brother Jak said. “In Cotone the temple has been rebuilt after many years of disrepair. One tome is for their first service and the other for the benefactor of the temple's reconstruction. Visit Achard Pall with our gift and this letter of gratitude. The temple father in Cotone will direct you from there.”

I bowed and took the weighty books. These were precious to the faithful but worth little to anyone else. “Thank you, brother Jak. May your wings and the wind both carry you.”

“A pleasing farewell, brother Bastian.”

Now I stand on the rising and falling seas. I contemplate the many years since my reckless youth and find satisfaction in my own change. Allytyn might also be pleased. As the boat pushes through choppy waters, I rock back and forth in rhythm with the slanting deck. A tern circles high above us and I feel, for this moment, a sense of peace.

I'm really sorry, but I wanted to change up a couple small things. Mostly around the skills. I promise this will be the last change I make. also, I want to look for a better pic, maybe a real eladrin as apposed to an elf. I'll post that if i can find it.
I'm actually quite please you made those changes and so will the rest of the party I think.

Here are your PC's in the old style character generator, Jay we still have to go over some changes from Essentials back to 4E. Please note that I selected pictures to help differentiate the files in the character builder not based upon what you have described thus far. If you find an image that you want to use I will gladly incorporate it.

I'd like to purchase a quarterstaff (I've always loved quarterstaves for some reason) but otherwise mine looks just right. I indicated in my opening that Im carrying two heavy tomes. Is that something that needs to be indicated at least for encumbrance?

MindDetective

MindDetective

Nope, not yet.

Also, here's me copying Gusto:

Motivation
- Bastian's present task is to deliver two tomes to the new Temple of Allytyn in Cotone and to the temple's benefactor, Achard Pall.
- He is expecting to set out from Cotone to minister on the teachings of the temple after his deliveries are complete.
- In life as a whole, Bastian struggles to fully understand his faith. He is a devout follower of the temple's teachings but, like most followers of Allytyn, faces a conflict between the cold, distant nature of his faith with the emotional turmoil of being human.

Personality
- Quiet, but blunt when he speaks
- He is slow to anger, despite a history of trouble as a youth
- His faith is the center of his entire world view
- He both fears and appreciates change
- Patient, perhaps to a fault, as the “march of time” is central to the temple's teachings
- Somewhat distant, comfortable in his solitude
- Driven by a purpose to exact change through ministry.
- Non-judgmental

Likes
- reading
- prayer
- practicing his martial arts
- philosophy (though it is an interest only)
- he has acquired a taste for fresh and exotic fruits

Dislikes
- willful ignorance
- alcohol
- rich foods
- abuse of power/oppression of the poor or minority

#153

Jay

The .Rar? You'll need WinRar for that or WinZip (maybe). It's provides upwards to 25% better compression than Winzip. I believe Macs use UnRarX.

#154

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, I downloaded gametable from SourceForge and it can run on my Mac that way (no .exe to run). I transferred over your pogs from Jay's game and those work. I'm not sure what else I might need but it doesn't look like the two versions are completely compatible. Can anyone test it with me? I can always run Jay's version on my work laptop (which sucks hard) but if I can get this one to work it would be fantastic!
Added at: 17:32
Looks like there is an issue with the underlays folder. When I put all the contents of that folder from Jay's version into the latest gametable version from SourceForge, the program doesn't load for me. Not sure which file it is but I might be able to narrow it down.

#160

MindDetective

MindDetective

Doesn't look like the SourceForge version is connecting. Could be my router or could be the two versions are incompatible. I did have to delete 3 underlay files from Jay's version and have numerous additional underlay files with the new version too. I've only copied over the pog folder and overlay and underlay files. There may be other discrepancies but it looks like Jay's version and the SourceForge version are not compatible.

#161

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Try it again, it is more likely an issue with my hosting settings. Gusto couldn't get in either, so I am testing out some options until Jay can walk me through this hosting part.

#163

Far

There doesn't seem to be a way to install anything from the rar gusto provided, unless I'm missing it entirely, so I'm assuming it can't find the gametable app because it was never installed. It simply opens to a folder titled "gametable solaria" then "game table RC8' the contents of which are seemingly what would be in the program folder once installed.

#164

MindDetective

MindDetective

There is an .exe you can run, I think, though not on a Mac. There is a .jar file that runs as well, though the program crashes for me for whatever reason. The SourceForge version is only a .jar and does run on my machine.
Added at: 18:17
By the way, the .rar probably unpacked a folder in your downloads folder (or wherever you put it) called GameTable Solaria, which has all of that stuff in it.

#165

Gametable is a java engine. Thus open the java file name Gametable.jar.

Yeah, I gathered that. Your version won't run, unfortunately. However, I DID get it to run only after deleting some of those custom images. If Far was running it on a newer computer, I am guessing it is some kind of Java update conflict. Since Apple updates Java themselves, I will have to try the work laptop tomorrow. #187

MindDetective

MindDetective

Jay's version of GameTable works on my work laptop! I also loaded his sample macro file and can see what I'll need to do for my own macros. I'll work on that this weekend.

#188

Gusto

I think Doom uses a similar set-up, or at least used to...

#189

MindDetective

MindDetective

I'm in my office working today (grading, hoo. ray.) and am up for testing ventrilo and GameTable if anyone is around and interested.

#190

MindDetective

MindDetective

I took a grading break and started putting my macros in. I have most of the damage ones in as well as initiative and skill checks. The attack rolls I am a little confused on. When it says Attack 6 vs. AC, what does that mean, exactly? The bonuses seem to be applied based on the method of attack afterwards but I'm not exactly sure how to put in the macro for the attacks.

#191

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Attack 6 = d20 + 6 is your attack roll, and it's against the defense type AC. So if you roll 13 + 6, it's a 19. If that meets or is higher than the enemy's AC, you hit.

#192

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, I thought it was a bonus, but the different weapon choices also seem to add in their own attack bonuses. So if it was Attack 6 vs. AC and the club gave a +4 to attack would it be d20+10?

#193

rathkor

no, the +4 is a part of the +6

#194

MindDetective

MindDetective

Hmm, so I'm having trouble reading the At-Will attacks, then. It says Attack 6 vs. AC and then it lists all of the possibilities below, such as club, shuriken, or unarmed attack (all using my Ki focus or not). They each have different attack bonuses. Do I use the bonus listed with the weapon instead of the Attack 6 vs. AC then? Is 6 just the maximum possible with the weapons available?
Added at: 14:24
Hmm, it can't be the maximum because some of the weapons have higher bonuses than the one listed at the top of the At-Will card. Now I'm really confused!

#195

rathkor

oh, ok. you use the bonus next to the weapon or focus you are using. i appologize.

#196

MindDetective

MindDetective

So the At-Will has Attack 6, that means d20+6 and then if I used my unarmed attack with Ki focus, it adds another +6? d20+12? damn. That seems high but having never played 4e I couldn't be certain.

#197

rathkor

yeah, if youre using the ki focus, just look at the numbers next to it. if youre using the club, look at the totals next to the club.
Added at: 14:31
you shouldnt have to add anything. it should have it automatically added in.

#198

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, let's use a concrete example. How do I read this?

At-Will Example.png

#199

Gusto

Gusto

That image means that if you use that attack with your fist, gaining the enhancement bonus of your magic ki focus, you would roll 1d20+6 for the attack roll. The weapons/ki focus list at the bottom just lists all the possible ways you can make that attack. Obviously you wanna go for the higher attack values, which in this case, are either your club or monk unarmed strike, augmented by your +2 ki focus.
Added at: 16:21
Also please note that those listed possibilities also have the damage rolls that they're granting. So while it says next to "Hit:" 1d6+4 damage, it'd actually be 1d6+6, since your +2 ki focus also adds it's enhancement bonus to damage.

#200

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

That power is melee touch and does not involve a weapon, so equiping a weapon does nothing for you.

It is a DEX vs REFLEX attack, so all you bonuses to attack will have your +4 for 18 DEX, equipping a weapon will do nothing, if you choose to equip your magic ki focus, you gain an additional +2 to attack.

Since the power card lists 1d6+DEX damage, you will do 1d6+4 damage as a base, if you equip the magic ki focus, you will do 1d6+6 damage.

Equipping any magic weapon or any type of weather will do nothing for you. I chose to display all the options on the card so that you can see how equipping various items changes the attack.

#201

MindDetective

MindDetective

So the attack value at the top is simply the maximum possible? The basic melee attack confuses me, then, because it has one that is higher in the bottom list than at the top of the card:

Melee Attack Example.png

Finally, do I just need to make an attack macro for the basic attack possibilities and not one for each at-will, daily and encounter (since they are all attacks that use available weapons).
Added at: 15:29
Also, thanks for your patience! Hopefully I will be less newbish soon.

#202

Gusto

Gusto

What I do is list the attack rolls and damage rolls for each attack, knowing that in most/almost ALL cases I'll only be attacking with what works best. That way, I can list bonus effects in the macro name as well.

So, like, my daily Stirring Shout as an effect that goes off hit-or-miss, and hitting just does damage. So my macro titles are:

DAILY: Stirring Shout (attack)(CHA vs. Will)(ranged 10)(allies gain 4 hit points when hitting target for the rest of encounter)
DAILY: Stirring Shout (damage)

For attacks/powers that only do effects when I it the enemy, I put the effect in the title of the damage roll.

It may just be the standard CHA-based shortbow roll for me, 1d20+6, but my macro is much more informative of what I'm actually doing than just ATTACK: Shortbow.

#203

MindDetective

MindDetective

So your macros will all basically be same but the titles let you know additional bonuses that might occur and which dailies and encounters you've used, etc.

#204

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

The melee basic attack assumes that you are using equipment first; so it listed attacking with everything equipped first, then attacking with the monk unarmed attack second, then foolishly listed you attacking as if you were not a monk last. Either way since it is a MELEE WEAPON attack that is STR vs AC, you apply your STR bonus and any weapon proficiency bonuses to the attack roll. Damage is resolved by the weapon chosen.

#205

MindDetective

OK, that all is muuuuch clearer now. Thanks!

#206

Just to be clear, are we playing this coming Tuesday?

#207

MindDetective

MindDetective

That was my understanding.

#208

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

I am good to go schedule wise for Tuesday.

MD your macro might look something like this;

DLY Whirling Mantis Step a (SHIFT my speed, slide 1 any enemy whose square I enter, attack those enemies)[Melee touch, DEX vx FORT]
DLY Whirling Mantis Step d (Target is slowed SE, MISS: 1/2 dam, target is slowed EoMNT)

#209

MindDetective

MindDetective

Is that two macros or one? It looks like the a and d are referring to the hit and miss components of the Daily. Sorry, it is a bit of a crash course for me learning 4e and GameTable all at once!

Also, the At-Will stances have an optional move component. Do those need macros separate from the attack component?
Added at: 16:06
Ah, I see, a = attack, d = damage. I was typing that out (following Jay's example)

#210

Gusto

Gusto

Moves don't need macros because they don't require roles.

And that's two macros; the first is the attack roll, the second is the damage roll and includes context for the miss condition.

#211

MindDetective

MindDetective

I bet it will all make more sense when I see everything in action.

#212

#240

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Looks good, save for Temple of Light. Since the word Effect is not spaced under the hit result, the effect applies no matter if you hit or not, so you need to put the effect text in the attack macro.

You may want to add a CD or something to differentiate your Channel Divinity powers and add your 2nd wind and Iron Mind powers.

And also add a macro for critical hit bonus damage.

#241

MindDetective

MindDetective

How do you do the critical hit bonus damage macro?

#242

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

For your monk it would be 2d6, as indicated by your magic ki focus.

Far's is different in that his character will get more crits than other characters and he is wielding a high crit weapon so it makes more sense for him to have a set macro for it.

Everyone else just as easily type in /roll 1d6 or whatever the damage is.

#243

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, I won't worry about it then. I should have my macros done tomorrow. I've been making macros for with ki focus and without. It might be overkill but I'll take it as good practice.

#244

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Not sure if it has been mention to you yet, since you can often attack multiple targets with a single power, you treat that by rolling separate attacks for each target but only a single damage roll to be applied to all.

#245

MindDetective

MindDetective

Oh really? So I could potentially deal 8 damage to three different targets?

#246

Jay

Jay

Quick and non aggressive question, have you read the 4th Edition Player's Handbook? :)

#247

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Say you are completely surrounded,

EEE
EME
EEE

if you use your Five Storms attack power you would make 8 separate attack rolls against your enemies but only a single damage roll against the ones you hit. It's a rule change to save on dice rolling.

#248

MindDetective

I have not. I have been perusing the searchable database at WotC so far. I don't have access to a physical copy at the moment.

I didn't read it either before first playing; I just listened to the Penny Arcade 4th Edition adventures and I had most of it understood. So don't feel like you absolutely need it when you have the character builder.

#250

Jay

The first few game sessions were interesting as many people didn't play the 4th edition. Now with a good party being in the know of 90% of the rules it should play out faster.

I have a macro for crits on all my characters, at it's most basic level it's

EXTRA DAMAGE: Critical Strike

That way I can add in extra effects or damage types as necessary. So for Errik who had a fiery magical tome, it was

EXTRA DAMAGE: Critical Strike (fire)

Another one of my characters would knock a target prone on a critical strike, so I added that text to that macro too. I'm just sayin' it couldn't hurt.

#253

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, first attempt at macros. Hopefully I've got the right idea. I couldn't get macros to save if they didn't have a dice-roll listed, so I put a d20 dice roll on my special Move abilities with text to ignore the roll.

All the math looks good, you can simplify the Move macros by rolling 0d1 it always rolls a 0 so you can safely ignore the roll.

I'll be ready to go to test this stuff out. I also did one of these for Ralts.

Motivation
-Ralts is most often driven by signs provided, both directly and indirectly, to him by Lawbringer. Through years of training he has enabled himself to divine these from many sources, from the most mundane such as a shifting wind to the rarer and usually more explicit whispers and visions. He however does not simply follow these blindly and instead takes them into careful consideration before taking actions.
-Ralts has been given leave from his order recently and has begun traveling under the condition that while on his journey he adheres to the sects’ ways and heeds the will of Lawbringer. Few know of the reason behind his leaving save the high chancellor and the prime council whom he had to petition in order to venture beyond the orders lands while not on one of their tasks.

Personality
-Devout
-Pragmatic
-Disciplined
-Solemn

Likes
-Justice
-Meditation
-Simple clothing

Dislikes
-Excess
-Brash individuals
-Alcohol
-Those who oppose the will of Lawbringer.

Also this is what I picture him as. Only difference being that he should have a large sword as well.

Having trouble figuring out my critical macro. I thought it was 1d6+1d12 since it's a high crit weapon?

weaponoath.png

It was good times until the ogre smashed our heads in. Excited to get started as well.

#272

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

For being a fullblade it is +1d12 and magic adds another +1d6, so total dice would be +1d12+1d6

Heh, with only the three of you, the encounter level rose to level 9 for the final fight. Still it showed how battles separate and the role of a defender, and how to make death saves and coup-de-grace.

#273

Gusto

So y'all got murdered huh?

On an oathed target that's just crazy for avengers.

#277

MindDetective

MindDetective

I'll be good at handling minions and general crowd control, I think...as long as they aren't all too spread out.

#278

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

time delayed double post?

Had Gusto and Jay been there last night, I think the party could easily have made a fight of the last encounter, which was designed to demonstrate front line and back line fighting. If you had a controller to keep the ogre and hobgoblins at bay, Bastion and Ralts could have easily dispatched the artillery and leader. Leaving the three big targets to conquer as a group.

#279

MindDetective

MindDetective

Wow. I think I duplicated a post, deleted the duped post, and then ended up with no posts. Weird.

Anyway, I'm more suited for spreading my damage out, so minions and very basic crowd control will be my forte.

#280

Far

Far

My build is defintely made to single out one enemy until he is dead, using the attacks that do hit me from others to make my own more damaging, and then moving on. Need to work on my defenses soon I think. I may take leather training as my next feat to help with that.

And divine guidance is great with its only downside being that the miss has to be on my oath target.

#281

MindDetective

MindDetective

So you guys got me thinking that I might not have enough attack power for solo targets. Does it make my character a bit a niche utility player in the group that way? I was thinking about replacing my Encounter power (if I'm allowed) with something a bit more targeted. Having tried a couple of combat scenarios, I can see how it might be beneficial to have some extra power. Otherwise I can pick something up at level 3. Advice?

#282

Gusto

Gusto

Try to strike a balance. As a striker, you'll typically wanna focus on single targets but fun powers like Five Storms are hard to pass by.

Incidentally, if you're thinking of changing, Open the Gate of Battle is a fun power that always got hilarious tabletalk from me. :)

#283

MindDetective

MindDetective

Yeah, that looks exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking of. I'd say it would be that one or Stinging Nettles.

#284

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

I'm fine if you want to make that change.

#285

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, I think I'd like to drop Scattering Leaves for Open the Gate of Battle. I think I'd like to change Whirling Mantis Step with Spinning Leopard Maneuver too. Hopefully that adds a little more pizzazz to my character. Although I apparently lose almost all the minor crowd-control abilities with those changes. I didn't get to do too much of that in our little test run but I got the impression it may not be a vital ability.

#286

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Switching from Whirling Mantis Step to Spinning Leopard Maneuver you lose a small amount of control and gain a large amount of damage, but control isn't your forte so it's a great trade.

And that brings up another point, whenever you gain a level you may retrain: 1 skill, 1 power and 1 feat.

So if SLM isn't what you like, you can retrain it to another attack once you reach 2nd level.

#287

MindDetective

MindDetective

I think I'll like having a bit more power, but it is nice to know I can retrain if needed. I've been doubting my choice on the Runner feat, but we'll try it out for a while.

#288

Gusto

Gusto

Feats I took with my monk:

Unarmored Agility: +2 feat bonus to AC as long as you're wearing cloth. I took it because I often found myself in the the middle of melee and wanted to have some survivability.
Defensive Mobility: +2 [untyped bonus] to AC against opportunity attacks. I took this for the same reasons, plus what good is all that monkish mobility if I can't use it without fear of opportunity attacks?

I also took a multiclass feat but you probably don't wanna get too involved in those right off the bat.

#289

MindDetective

MindDetective

Yeah, I have been going through the character creator to update and ended up swapping out Runner for Unarmored agility. I am actually wondering if it would be better to get a +2 to Will instead, since I have an AC of 18 already and my Will is only 13. I can't seem to get the house-ruled feats in, though, or the Iron Parry feat to grant me the AC bonus for wielding a club. I also didn't see where to add in the Monastic back story.
Added at: 10:48
Actually, maybe I'll drop Iron Parry and pick up the will bonus feat. Damn there really are too many choices.

If there's a disparity, go by the creator info. There have been several things they've changed based on playtesting; Magic Missile canonically is completely different than it used to be. Which is, ironically, exactly what is was in 3.5e DnD.

Alright. Still no house-ruled stuff or back story, but I think I've generally got it. Here's the pdf (with the wrong damage listed for Spinning Leopard Maneuver?) and the character creator file. hopefully I'm done now. pog and macros also updated. Is it Tuesday yet?

MindDetective

MindDetective

I bet you're right... But I'm not changing it any more before I level!

#297

Gusto

Gusto

One thing you SHOULD change - the bonus language you selected is not something tat will ever come up in the game world we're in, it's setting-specific to Eberron or Forgotten Realms or something. It'd be a waste of a bonus language if you didn't switch to dwarven or elven or draconic or deep speech or goblin or something.

#298

MindDetective

MindDetective

OK, HC never said anything, so I just picked a language at random, really. I'll pick something else. Thanks!

#300

MindDetective

MindDetective

I suppose I wouldn't mind picking something that fits my back-story. HC, what races are in or around Kabi? I suppose if it is a big enough city it doesn't matter much but if there is some race that populates that area, I'll adopt that language.

#301

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Languages available to be selected to all PC's;

Common
Elven
Dwarven
Goblin
Giant
Feyish
Devilish (Tieflings natural language)

These languages are not available to be selected by any PC's
French
Halfling

These languages may only be selected by those who are trained in Religion
Draconic
Midnight (This is the language spoken by the undead)

Bastion would be exposed to all the regularly available languages on Kabi, but with a greater emphasis on Devilish and Common, with less exposure to Fey and Giant.

Sent from my netbook with limited internet access for the next few days several hundred miles from home.

#302

#333

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

There were seven to begin with,

2 humans
2 eladrin
1 dwarf
1 halfling
1 githzerai

The dwarf and halfling succumbed to their injuries and the effects of drifting at sea, so only five remain.

Edit:

Since this is your first time with me as a DM, allow me to inform you of the styles I utilize and what you can expect tonight.

I use a lot of symbolism and foreshadowing. In the narrative I posted last night, their are five examples of this. One has already been uncovered.

My world is a sandbox. There are themes that will be explored, but how and when revelations will be made will be directed by the players. After tonights first session, where you go and what you do is completely up to you.

The world will established by me, but shaped significantly by the players. So the greater input you choose to provide, the more ingredients I have to shape the game with.

This world pre-dates the re-emergence of Doctor Who to mainstream television. Any similarity between certain species in this world and time lords is completely unintentional. Though your interaction with them will be very limited.

Don't expect any monsters to look like anything you will find in the monster manual.

By only playing once a month, I expect that significant player growth will have to occur in the RP thread.

Most everything is important or can turn out to be important later on.

I like punctual players.

Yes you can inspect them, but tonights adventure will not involve any mundane items. You still have all your magic items and items of specified significance. I will post a full list of what survived the ship battle after tonight's session so you can better determine how you want to proceed.

#339

MindDetective

MindDetective

Mostly I'm curious about their religious orientation (for burial purposes, etc.) and whether or not they had any significant ties to civilization (letters, keepsakes, etc.) that might be worth little but important. If there is nothing to discern, no problem.

#340

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

The halfling and dwarf appeared to be part of the crew that served below deck on the Osprey, as such they had little items save a work knife and some rope on them. Their clothing is torn after the battle with the Sea Lions, they managed to help right the longboat and make it sea worthy but soon after died of their wounds. They were both 3rd class seamen, the dwarf was Brurnwere Saltrock of a small village near the mountains in Grano, the halfling was Iris Quickwit, from Avena.

Note: This is exactly what I meant earlier. To me the dwarf/halfling started out as just two throwaway npc's to help shake the notion that only the party survived the ship battle. Now after MD's interactions, I have backstories invented for them.

Not nearly as good as what you guys have done for your characters but here is a very little bit of back story for Ralts.

To the north of Muki lies a vast expanse of mountains, gripped by an eternal winter. In this desolate and isolated region, the Gerech’Drakona reside, fulfilling the will of Lawbringer. A proud and noble group whose traditions have been passed down through out time, they believe their goal is to interpret signs from Lawbringer as a means of upholding justice. By studying the dragons, whom are guardians of time and magic created by Allytyn, that dwell in the surrounding mountains the Gerech’Drakona have used the knowledge gleaned to aid in fulfilling their goal as well as having developed an enormous respect for the creatures.

Ralts Udell, a Gerech’Drakona himself, has ventured beyond the orders isolated sanctuary. The first of the Gerech to be allowed leave to roam unchecked in the lands of Aime in years, this was not an easy undertaking for the council to allow; however after lengthy deliberation the leave was permitted with the conditions that Ralts uphold and inform those misguided in the ways of the Gerech’Drakona while traveling and, on the councils end, that they not reveal Ralts’ reason for departing to the others. While the Gerech believe that the work they do is necessary, few outside of the cabal fully understand how they can put such faith in the signs they interpret. While on his pilgrimage Ralts intends to clear up as many misconceptions about the Gerech’Drakona as he I able to.

Venturing to Uradzaj , Ralts has secured passage on a ship headed for Cotone with his few possessions and begins his journey.

Headset as in a mic and ear pieces? I switched to a set of head phones after a short while. I'm working with a mic built into a netbook, and normally just the speakers there as well. Any way to help clean it up on ventrillo's side?

#360

Jay

Jay

I got all sorts of feedback all night long. During combat it was significantly less of an issue as the players took their turns but the roleplaying part left me looking at the clock and lowering the volume significantly. I'm just bringing this up as it was an issue and as you know me, frank as always.

Furthermore, after finding out that the entire online builder is considering essentials in your dictionary (no special human trait, mage class abilities, specific cantrips... etc) I installed the old builder and tried to rebuild my character as a standard wizard. Goddamn, color me unimpressed by Human Wizards.

Felt like going from eating filet Mignon to a boloney sammich.

Old build is nicer to work with but didn't know essentials made character so much more interesting. Heck, after some fooling around after the game last night I realized several on my players are using essentials and some aren't and those who aren't aren't anywhere near the same level as their counterparts.

Thank god it's a monthly game, gonna take a break on this headache. :)

HC, is it reasonable that after hearing the flock of birds sing their peculiar song, that Solaria might be able to replicate it on the lyre in the future?

Yes, you can easily replicate it.

Lousy life getting in the way of D&D

Anyway, it may be a week late, but here is a brief history of Aime.

History of Aime

Very little is known about what occurred in the world before the great cataclysm, most know that it was a long and chaotic. Records of that era fail to make sense, so most of the world considers that life began after the cataclysm ended.

It has been two thousand one hundred and forty years since the cataclysm was determined by scholars to have ended, since then Aime has enjoyed generations of peace.

A brief conflict between Zbozza and Muki persisted for years (yr 200), but was eventually resolved amicably. From this fight came advances in naval technology that opened up the world even further. Suddenly, the sea became the focus of the world and distances became short.

In the blink of an eye, some four hundred years (yr 600) had passed and on the island of Kabisera something magical was happening. Representatives from each religion gathered on the island and held a conclave of ideas. From this meeting came the pledge to discover truths within their own faiths and to help each other in the fields of magical research. New schools were founded in each nation and the sharing of information grew once more.

All was not picture perfect, for ten years a storm raged (yr 1000) in northern desert of Col, destroying most of the civilization that lived there. People have yet to return to the northern sector, most choose circuitous routes to visit Persolaquo in the south.

The Festival of Ploughshares traces it's roots back almost one thousand years, a celebration of the banishment of weapons of any sort on the island of Kabisera and the establishment of the Nations of Aime Court of Peoples, the democratic government representing all people in all nations.

In the year 1425, settlers from the city of Cotone sailed across the Straight of Civility and established the city of Mansanas by taming the wild jungle of Lalaw and brought religion to the native tribes found at the volcanoes base. These citizens would grow and prosper for almost six hundred years, when in 2014 they secede from Grano and form their own nation.

Recent history has had some worrying tones for the world of Aime, magical research has slowed slightly when compared to previous centuries. People in Cotone are openly debating the loss of Lalaw. Tribes of orcs have been aggressive in their transactions in the north of Muti and the women of Foret have been campaigning to remove themselves from the Court of Peoples over a quarrel with the horsemen of Zbozza.

Just some rolls to determine some actions the party would most likely take en route to the monastery.

RP post to follow/explain.

Bastion: 1d20=11, 1d20=18, 1d20=7
Solaria: -
Locian: 1d20=8
Inara: 1d20=13, 1d20=9
Ralts: 1d20=18, 1d20=8, 1d20=16

#374

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

In good spirits, the party sets out on the next leg of their journey. Winds and water favour them and they spend a half day before landing on a large island, their last before hopefully reaching the island that houses the monastery. A combination of previous islands, this land is rich with vegetation and wildlife. The hunters put forth a valiant effort, but fail to catch any prey. Dejected they settle in for the night and share a round of stories and jests.
OK, new RP post up and I quoted the last paragraph here for a reason. Please amongst yourselves RP a large vicious panther attacking the party in the middle of the night. The party has a tough struggle and eventually overcomes the beast, before settling back down for the night.

XP will be awarded for the combat and for how you tell your story.

Also free map.

I'm partial to describing the encounter turn by turn.

What I've described in my post is Solaria failing her [passive] perception check and being surprised by the panther, falling prone in some difficult terrain, shooting and missing with a Jinx Shot, and alerting the rest of the party to the threat. Whoever chooses to post next will have the next place in the initiative order, just make sure the panther goes at some point too.

This should be neat!

MindDetective

MindDetective

Thanks for the Like, Gusto. I wasn't real happy with that one myself. Gotta tone back the angst and find some other source of conflict for Bastian, I think. We haven't gotten much interaction with each other yet, is the problem. That'll change, though.

#377

HCGLNS

Just so we're clear, based upon how smoothly maptool is going, I will be using maptool moving forward with maptool and foregoing. Far & MindDetective, please download a copy and visit Jay's thread for our discussions on the program.

#381

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

It actually makes a lot of sense for me to do this, as every character brings something new that I have to add to the campaign and token settings. For example, after I said I was finished with your macros, I had to update them based upon what I learned making Solarias.

#382

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

OK, if you haven't got MapTools, now is the time to get it.

The attached file contains a campaign file, all of your token files and all starting macros sets.

Please play around with it and see if you can find any differences with your pc's.

Note: if you are using a power that can attack multiple targets it will prompt you to enter how many you intend to attack.

Far: for all of your powers it will prompt you to see if you are able to use your Oath of Enmity ability. If you are enter 1, else use 0. If you are using your OoE ability and have your Censure of Retribution damage, you then enter how many times.

The state buttons just toggle the selected state.

When in doubt hit the Extended Rest Button, then Clear.

RE: my story line entry. Ok, so my last posting on the story board was suppose to display how Locian thinks in the midst of combat. I don't know how well I may have been able to get that across, as a writer I am at best a hach with heart. lol
Outside of combat, Locian is lighthearted and fun loving, but due to his intense training he recieved while adventuring, in combat he is stern, calculating, and extremely analytical, though he may still appear outwardly his usual goofy self at times on occassion, to make his enemies less likely to take him seriously, leaving him at an advantage. He will use any tactics and strategies in combat that he believes will gove him an upper hand. If that wasn't clear in my kinda subpar writing style, I do appologize.

Yeah, you guys are much better writers than I, I'll do what I can to add input on Ralts' end but the quality of stuff you guys put out is almost discouraging. Also, I'm good to go for Tuesday as well.

To be fair, I roll d20s and give myself a result in te same ballpark. I missed my first attack. Going by the effect of my Focussed Sound ability (crit on an 18-20) I finished te panther with a crit Jinx Shot.

#393

Downloaded and took a look at maptools. I seem to have figured out much of what ill need to use as a player. I tried out many of the macros you had made for me hc and most seem good. Abjure undead is a little odd but I'll see if I can't get it figured out. It certainly seems like a vast improvement over gametable.

#394

The problem with abjure undead was that I applied your oath of enmity ability to the macro, where as a distance attack you can't benefit from it.

If you wish - Solaria's assertion isn't that we are in JUST a far off land, but also another period in time or possibly an alternate reality altogether. The landforms are different from anything she's learned about on Aime; even if the names were different, the geography would be similar. The events are long in Aime's past, but they are the same events, near as we can tell. But what power would allow for the extinction of elvenkind and then their return, if that's the case? and how do the Githzerai fit into that?

There's a lot of RP I could do with Solaria but she's a bookish type, a scholar if not a student formally, and I'd first need HC to tell me a Brief History of the Universe in order to be informed.

----

I'm taking Concerted Effort as a daily utility and Bard of All Trades as a feat. This may change; it's not an easy choice to make. I have like all my feats planned for the heroic tier. It's hard on settle on one.

Seriously, just about anything you could tell me in a PM would be excellent. Solaria has high knowledge skills all around and spent most of her 76 years so far reading books in the temple library of Persolacquo, so it's reasonable that she knows a lot about a lot.

And obviously I as a player know very little, so little that I wouldn't even know what to ask for.

Concerted Effort

Me and all allies within burst
Effect: Until EOMNT, each target gains a +1 power bonus to attack rolls. Whenever a target its with at least one attack during his turn, the bonus increases by 1 for each target whose turn hasn't begun yet.

:)

So ideally, by the time the initiative order come back to me, I'll be rocking a +5 attack bonus. It's another feedback loop power sort of like Focussed Sound that means one character's success makes the whole team much more effective.

Okay so say I use that power on my turn. Then Locian goes next. He gets a +1 to his attacks. If he hits at least once during his turn, then Bastian, Ralts and Inara will get a +2 bonus. undead archer 2.jpg

You had the misfortune of falling prey to a trap. A seemingly innocent unattended campfire. When you investigated you were set upon by 2 revenant archers, 2 zombie brutes and 5 skeletal minions. The archers used the terrain to their advantage by attacking at long range as the brutes held you in position.

Two crucial events occured, Inara was hit by a powerful attack that dazed her (SE) and she promptly failed her saves for several rounds. This allowed the monsters to switch locations that took them out of Inara's line of site while a group of skeleton engaged her.

The second crucial event occurred as the party was finishing destroying the undead, it was an intense combat with dailies, healing and second winds being used by all, but the advantage was clearly in the PC's favour. Only the archers remained when one of them felled Solaria with a devastating arrow shot. Ralts quickly killed this archer, but the final archer decided to run away. With Solaria dying, and Inara unable to assist her, the other party members opted to give chase to final archer, before eventually returning to help Solaria.

I wish we had a more controlling controller. When we get spread out like that things go to hell fast.

The spreading out wasn't the fault of Inara, but rather the plans of the archers. They controlled the movements of Solaria and Inara then moved the combat to a place that better suited them, you chose to follow and split the party.

Actually, the archers kept moving away from us and dropping that multi-target bomb. Since Inara was dazed and Solaria was low on hit points, we ended up spreading out. If the archers were less mobile it would have been a very different fight. We just don't have (or at least don't utilize) a lot of powers to lock down movement or push our opponents around. This by definition means we have to chase them around. :-/

Or next time, stay hidden behind the wall and make them come to you. When they turn the corner to get a clear shot, pounce!

Beautiful Bloomage!

I just want to reiterate, Locian even pointed out that this was going to be a trap. his exact quote was: "Every time we stop to investigate things like this, something tries to kill us. I say we ignore it and keep moving." moral of the story. Locian is now team leader and everyone should start listening to him.
Whoa, wait.

Was I leading this team??

Well look at it this way, you know don't know where you are, where you are going or how to get home. You are constantly harassed by birds, pursued by viscous cats and half your party is likely to be killed on sight by the locals. There are at least two separate forces trying to guide your path, neither of which you trust, you just lost a faithful companion and have allowed a deadly enemy to escape.

On the plus side, it's only another day until you reach Lutal.

You think. ;)
